The problem of the concentration jump of a vapour in the vicinity of a plane wall, which consists of the condensed phase of the vapour, in a rarefied gas mixture of that vapour (A) and another 'inert' gas (B), is considered. The general formulation of the problem of determining the concentration-jump coefficient for dA is given. In the Knudsen layer the simplest model of Boley-Yip theory is used to simplify the Boltzmann equations for the binary gas mixture. The numerical calculation of the concentration jump coefficient for dA for various values of evaporation coefficient of A is illustrated for the case of the equilibrium concentration of B being much greater than that of A, for which experimental data are available.

The physical vapor transport (PVT) method is being widely used to grow large-size single SiC crystals. The growth process is associated with heat and mass transport in the growth chamber, chemical reactions among multiple species as well as phase change at the crystal/gas interface. The current paper aims at studying and verifying the transport mechanism and growth kinetics model by demonstrating the flow field and species concentration distribution in the growth system. We have developed a coupled model, which takes into account the mass transport and growth kinetics. Numerical simulation is carried out by employing an in-house developed software based on finite volume method. The results calculated are in good agreement with the experimental observation.

The lift force on a spherical nanoparticle near a wall in micro/nanofluidics has not received
sufficient attention so far. In this letter the concentration of 200 nm particles is measured at
0.25–2.0 m to a wall in a microchannel with pressure-driven de-ionized water flow pressure
gradient 0–2000 kPa/m . The measured data show the influence of the lift force on the nanoparticle
concentration distribution. By introducing the Saffman lift force into the Nernst–Planck equation
near a wall, we find that the lift force is dominant at the range of 2

The frequency upconversion properties of Er3+/Yb3+-codoped heavy metal oxide lead-germanium-bismuth oxide glasses under 975 mn excitation are investigated. Intense green and red emission bands centered at 536, 556 and 672 run, corresponding to the H-2(1/2) --> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2) --> I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2) -->I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+, respectively, were simultaneously observed at room temperature. The influences of PbO on upconversion intensity for the green (536 and 556 nm) and red (672 nm) emissions were compared and discussed. The optimized rare earth doping ratio of Er3+ and Yb3+, is 1:5 for these glasses, which results in the stronger upconversion fluorescence intensities. The dependence of intensities of upconversion emission on excitation power and possible upconversion mechanisms were evaluated and analyzed. The structure of glass has been investigated by means of infrared (IR) spectral analysis. The results indicate that the Er3+/Yb3+-codoped heavy metal oxide lead-germanium-bismuth oxide glasses may be a potential materials for developing upconversion fiber optic devices. Fluorophosphate glass with 4 mol.% ErF3 content was prepared. The different scanning calorimetry was conducted. Raman spectrum, infrared transmission spectrum, absorption spectrum were measured. Fluorescence spectrum and lifetime of emission around 1.53 mu m were measured under 970 nm laser diode excitation. The metaphosphate content in the composition is limited, but the maximum phonon energy of glass amounts to 1290 cm- 1, and is comparatively high. The full width at half maximum is about 56 nm, and is wider than for most of the materials investigated. The measured lifetime of I-4(13/2) -> I-4(15/2) transition, contributed by the high phonon energy, inefficient interaction of Er3+ ions, and low water content, amounts to no less than 7.36 ms though the Er3+ concentration is high. This work might provide useful information for the development of compact optical devices.

For the first time. effect of halide ions (F-, Cl-, Br-, and I-) introduction on structure, thermal stability, and upconversion fluorescence in Er3+/Yb3+-codoped oxide-halide germanium-bismuth glasses has been systematically investigated. The results show that halide ions modified germanium-bismuth glasses have lower maximum phonon energy and phonon density, worse thermal stability. longer measured lifetimes of I-4(l1/2) level, and stronger upconversion emission than germanium-bismuth glass. All these results indicate that halide ions play an important role in the formation of glass network, and have an important influence on the upconversion luminescence. The possible upconversion mechanisms of Er3+ ion are also evaluated. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effects of F- ions in a germanium-lead-tellurite glass system oil the spectral and potential laser properties of the Yb3+ are investigated. The absorption spectra, lifetimes, the emission cross-sections and the minimum pump intensities of the glass system with and without F- ions have been measured and calculated. The results show that the fluorescence lifetime and the minimum pump intensity of Yb3+ ions increase evidently, which indicates that germanium lead-oxyfluoride tellurite glass is a promising laser host matrix for high power generation. FT-IR spectra were used to analyse the effect of F- ions on OH- groups in this glass system. Analysis demonstrates that addition of fluoride removes the OH- groups and results in improvement of fluorescence lifetime of Yb3+.

Infrared-to-visible upconversion fluorescence property of Er3+/Yb3+ codoped novel bismuth-germanium glass under 975 nm LD excitation has been studied. Intense green and red emissions centered at 525, 546 and 657 nm, corresponding to the transitions H-2(11/2) -> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2), and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2), respectively, were observed at room temperature. The quadratic dependence of the 525, 546 and 657 nm emissions on excitation power indicates that a two-photon absorption process occurs. The structure of the bismuth-germanium glass has been investigated by peak-deconvolution of FT-Raman spectrum, and the structural information was obtained from the peak wavenumbers. This novel bismuth-germanium glass with low maximum phonon energy (similar to 750 cm(-1)) can be used as potential host material for upconversion lasers. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Structural and up-conversion fluorescence properties in ytterbium-sensitized thulium-doped novel oxychloride bismuth-germanium glass have been studied. The structure of novel bismuth-germanium glass was investigated by peak-deconvolution of Raman spectrum, and the structural information was obtained from the peak wave numbers. The Raman spectrum investigation indicates that PbCl2 plays an important role in the formation of glass network, and has an important influence on the up-conversion luminescence. Intense blue and weak red emissions centered at 477 and 650 mn, corresponding to the transitions 1G(4) -> H-3(6) and (1)G(4) -> H-3(4), respectively, were observed at room temperature. The possible up-conversion mechanisms are discussed and estimated. We study the structural and infrared-to-visible upconversion fluorescence properties of Er3(+)/Yb3+-codoped lead-free germanium-bismuth glass. The structure of lead-free germanium-bismuth-lanthanum glass is investigated by peak-deconvolution of Raman spectroscopy. Intense green and red emissions centred at 525, 546, and 657nm, corresponding to the transitions H-2(11/2) -> (IT15/2)-I-4 -> S-4(3/2) -> 4I(15/2), and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2), respectively, are observed at room temperature. The quadratic dependence of the 525, 546, and 657nm emissions on excitation power indicates that a two-photon absorption process occurs under 975nm excitation.

Er2O3-doped TeO2-ZnO-La2O3 modified tellurite glasses were prepared by the conventional melt-quenching method, and the Er3+ : I-4(13/2) -> I-4(15/2) fluorescence properties have been studied for different Er3+ concentrations. Infrared spectra were measured in order to estimate the exact content of OH- groups in samples. Based on the electric dipole-dipole interaction theory, the interaction parameter, C-Er,(Er), for the migration rate of Er3+ : I-4(13/2) -> I-4(13/2) in modified tellurite glass was calculated. Finally, the concentration quenching mechanism using a model based on energy transfer and quenching by hydroxyl (OH-) groups was presented. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Tm3+/Yb3+-codoped gernianate-niobic (GN) and germanium-bismuth (GB) glasses have been synthesized by conventional ruching and quenching method. Intense blue and weak red emissions centered at 477 and 650 nm, corresponding to the transitions (1)G(4)->H-3(6) and (1)G(4)->H-3(4), respectively, were observed at room temperature. The possible Up-conversion mechanisms are discussed and estimated. GN glass showed a weaker up-conversion emission than GB glass, which is inconsistent with the prediction from the difference of maximum phonon energy between GN and GB glasses. In this paper, Raman spectroscopy was employed to investigate the origin of the difference in up-conversion luminescence in the two glasses. Compared with phonon side-band spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy extracts more information including both phonon energy and phonon density. For the first time, our results reveal that, besides the maximum phonon energy, the phonon density of host glasses is also an important factor in determining the up-conversion efficiency.
