Tapping mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) was applied to study the adsorption behavior of methanol on mica, highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and indium-tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates. On mica and HOPG substrates surfaces, the thin films of methanol with bilayer and multilayer were observed, respectively. The formation of irregular islands of methanol was also found on HOPG surface. On ITO surface only aggregates and clusters of methanol molecules were formed. The influence of sample preparation on the adsorption was discussed.

A new type of silicomolybdate-methylsilicate-graphite composite material was prepared by the sol-gel technique and used for the fabrication of an amperometric nitrite sensor. The silicomolybdic anion acts as a catalyst, the graphite powder ensures conductivity by percolation, the silicate provides a rigid porous backbone and the methyl groups endow hydrophobicity and thus limit the wetting section of the modified electrode. Cyclic voltammetry, square-wave voltammetry and chronoamperometry were employed to characterize the sensor. The amperometric nitrite sensor exhibited a series of good properties: high sensitivity (1.771 mu A mmol(-1) dm(3)), a short response time (7 s), remarkable long-term stability and especially reproducibility of surface renewal in the event of electrode surface fouling.

A novel inorganic-organic hybrid material incorporating graphite powder and Keggin-type alpha -germanomolybdic acid (GeMo12) in methyltrimethoxysilane-based gels has been produced by the sol-gel technique and used to fabricate a chemically bulk-modified electrode. GeMo12 acts as a catalyst, graphite powder ensures conductivity by percolation, the silicate provides a rigid porous backbone, and the methyl groups endow hydrophobicity and thus limit the wetting section of the modified electrode. The GeMo12-modified graphite organosilicate composite electrode was characterized by cyclic and square-wave voltammetry. The modified electrode shows a high electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of bromate, nitrite and hydrogen peroxide in acidic aqueous solution. In addition, the chemically-modified electrode has some distinct advantages over the traditional polyoxometalate-modified electrodes, such as long-term stability and especially repeatability of surface-renewal by simple mechanical polishing.

Non-stoichiometric mixed-valent molybdenum(VI, V) oxide film was grown on carbon substrates by the electrodeposition method. Responses of the prepared molybdenum oxide thin films to potential and to different solution acidities were studied by cyclic voltammetry, and the corresponding morphological changes of the film were monitored by atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM images of the molybdenum oxide film show that the characteristic domed structure on the film surface increased during the transition from the oxidized state to the reduced state without signification change in the KMS surface roughness value. Furthermore, AFM studies show that the solution acidity has great effect on the morphology of the films, and the films undergo a homogenizing process with increasing pH of the solutions. Effects of the potential of anodic oxidation and of potential cycling on the surface structure of a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) electrode were observed by in situ electrochemical scanning tunnelling microscopy (ECSTM) in dilute H2SO4 solution with atomic resolution. With potential cycling between -0.1 V and 1.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl (sat. KCI), some atoms on the top layer of HOPG protrude out of the base plane, and the graphite lattice of these protrusions is still intact but is strained and expanded. With further potential cycling, some protrusions coalesced and some grew larger, and an anomalous superperiodic feature was observed (spacing 90 Angstrom with a rotation 30 degrees relative to atomic corrugations) which superimposed on the atomic corrugation of HOPG. On the topmost of these protrusions, some atoms form oxides and others are still resolved by the ECSTM image. With potential cycling between -0.1 V and + 2.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl (sat. KCl), damage to freshly cleaved HOPG surface is more serious and fast, some ridges are observed, the atomic structure of the HOPG surface is partially and then completely damaged due to the formation of oxide. We also found that anodic oxidation occurred nonuniformly on the surface of HOPG near defects during potential cycling.

The voltammetric behavior of cytochrome c entrapped in hydrogel membranes at paraffin wax-impregnated spectroscopic graphite electrodes (WISGE) was studied in this paper. A pair of well-defined peaks appeared at +70 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl). Beside these two peaks, another pair of peaks emerged at around +225 mV. Further investigations suggested that at least three states of cytochrome c existed in the membranes due to the special structure of the hydrogel. The native conformation of cytochrome c molecules was stabilized by the hydrophilic environment that was formed by the hydroxyl structure of the membranes and facilitated the cytochrome c electron transfer reaction at +70 mV. The molecules directly adsorbed on the surface of the graphite electrode were responsible for the redox peaks at around +225 mV. Whether the adsorption peaks were detectable or not was related to the thickness of membranes and the pre-retaining time before the formation of membranes.

The catalytic activity, thermal stability and carbon deposition of various modified NiO/gamma-Al2O3 and unmodified NiO/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts were investigated with a flow reactor, XRD, TG and UVRRS analysis. The activity and selectivity of the NiO/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst showed little difference from those of the modified nickel-based catalysts. However, modification with alkali metal oxide (Li, Na, K) and rare earth metal oxide (La, Ce, Y, Sm) can improve the thermal stability of the NiO/gamma-Al2O3 and enhance its ability to suppress carbon deposition during the partial oxidation of ethane (POE). The carbon deposition contains graphite-like species that were detected by UVRRS. The nickel-based catalysts modified by alkali metal oxide and rare earth metal oxide have excellent catalytic activities (C2H6 conversion of similar to 100%, CO selectivity of similar to 94%, 7x 10(4) l/(kg h), 1123 K), good thermal stability and carbon-deposition resistance.

Graphite-flake reinforced Cu47Ti34Zr11 Ni-8 bulk metallic glass matrix composite was fabricated by water-cooled copper mould cast. Most of the graphite flakes still keep unreacted and distribute uniformly in the amorphous matrix except that some reactive wetting occurs by the formation of TiC particles around the flakes. It reveals that the presence of graphite flakes does not affect the onset of the glass transition temperature, crystallization reaction and liquidus of the metallic glass. The resulting material shows obvious serrated flow and higher fracture strength under room temperature compressive load, comparing with the monolithic bulk metallic glass (BMG). Three types of interaction between the shear bands and graphite flakes, namely, shear band termination, shear bands branching and new shear bands formation near the graphite flakes can be observed by quasi-static uniaxial compression test and bonded interface technique through Vickers indentation.

Gadolinium oxide thin films have been prepared on silicon (100) substrates with a low-energy dual ion-beam epitaxial technique. Substrate temperature was an important factor to affect the crystal structures and textures in an ion energy range of 100-500 eV. The films had a monoclinic Gd2O3 structure with preferred orientation ((4) over bar 02) at low substrate temperatures. When the substrate temperature was increased, the orientation turned to (202), and finally, the cubic structure appeared at the substrate temperature of 700 degreesC, which disagreed with the previous report because of the ion energy. The AES studies found that Gadolinium oxide shared Gd2O3 structures, although there were a lot of oxygen deficiencies in the films, and the XPS results confirmed this. AFM was also used to investigate the surface images of the samples. Finally, the electrical properties were presented. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Deep-subwavelength gratings with periodicities of 170, 120, and 70 nm can be observed on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite irradiated by a femtosecond (fs) laser at 800 nm. Under picosecond laser irradiation, such gratings likewise can be produced. Interestingly, the 170-nm grating is also observed on single-crystal diamond irradiated by the 800-nm fs laser. In our opinion, the optical properties of the high-excited state of material surface play a key role for the formation of the deep-subwavelength gratings. The numerical simulations of the graphite deep-subwavelength grating at normal and high-excited states confirm that in the groove the light intensity can be extraordinarily enhanced via cavity-mode excitation in the condition of transverse-magnetic wave irradiation with near-ablation-threshold fluences. This field enhancement of polarization sensitiveness in deep-subwavelength apertures acts as an important feedback mechanism for the growth and polarization dependence of the deep-subwavelength gratings. In addition, we suggest that surface plasmons are responsible for the formation of seed deep-subwavelength apertures with a particular periodicity and the initial polarization dependence. Finally, we propose that the nanoscale Coulomb explosion occurring in the groove is responsible for the ultrafast nonthermal ablation mechanism.

We investigated the effect of cerium oxide on the precipitation of Ag nanoparticles in silicate glass via a femtosecond laser irradiation and successive annealing. Absorption spectra show that Ce3+ ions may absorb part of the laser energy via multiphoton absorption and release free electrons, resulting in an increase of the concentration of Ag atoms and a decrease of the concentration of hole-trapped color centers, which influence precipitation of the Ag nanoparticles. In addition, we found that the formed Ag-0 may reduce Ce4+ ions to Ce3+ ions during the annealing process, which inhibits the growth of the Ag nanoparticles.

The frequency upconversion properties of Er3+/Yb3+-codoped heavy metal oxide lead-germanium-bismuth oxide glasses under 975 mn excitation are investigated. Intense green and red emission bands centered at 536, 556 and 672 run, corresponding to the H-2(1/2) --> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2) --> I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2) -->I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+, respectively, were simultaneously observed at room temperature. The influences of PbO on upconversion intensity for the green (536 and 556 nm) and red (672 nm) emissions were compared and discussed. The optimized rare earth doping ratio of Er3+ and Yb3+, is 1:5 for these glasses, which results in the stronger upconversion fluorescence intensities. The dependence of intensities of upconversion emission on excitation power and possible upconversion mechanisms were evaluated and analyzed. The structure of glass has been investigated by means of infrared (IR) spectral analysis. The results indicate that the Er3+/Yb3+-codoped heavy metal oxide lead-germanium-bismuth oxide glasses may be a potential materials for developing upconversion fiber optic devices. Based on the Fresnel-Kirchkoff diffraction theory, we build up a Gaussian diffraction model of metal-oxide-type super-resolution near field structure (super-RENS), which can describe far field optical properties. The spectral contrast induced by refractive index and the structural changes in AgOx, PtOx and PdOx thin films, which are the key functional layers in super-RENS, are studied by using this model. Comparison results indicate that the spectral contrast intensively on laser-induced distribution and change of the refractive index in the metal-oxide films. The readout mechanism of the metal-oxide-type super-RENS optical disc is further clarified. This Gaussian diffraction model can be used as a simple and effective method for choosing proper active materials in super-RENS.

Transparent and translucent SnO2 aerogels with high specific surface area (>300m(2)/g) have been prepared by sol-gel process using tetra(n-butoxy)tin(IV) as a starting compound, and supercritical drying technique for solvent extraction. Light scattering measurements reveal that the polymeric cluster size distribution in sol system is gradually broadened during sol-gel transition. SEM images show that the aerogels are made up of the cottonlike oxide agglomerates with a large number of Pores. TEM images show that these aerogels seem to be self-similar at different magnifications. Their pore size distribution is pretty wide ranging, from mesopore to macropore especially for that of translucent aerogel. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel method for preparing nano-supercapacitor arrays, in which each nano-supercapacitor consisted of electropolymerized Polypyrrole (PPy) electrode / porous TiO2 separator / chemical polymerized PPy electrode, was developed in this paper. The nano-supercapacitors were fabricated in the nano array pores of anodic aluminum oxide template using the bottom-up, layer-by-layer synthetic method. The nano-supercapacitor diameter was 80 nm, and length 500 nm. Based on the charge/discharge behavior of nano-supercapacitor arrays, it was found that the PPy/TiO2/PPy array supercapacitor devices performed typical electrochemical supercapacitor behavior. The method introduced here may find application in manufacturing nano-sized electrochemical power storage devices in the future for their use in the area of microelectronic devices and microelectromechanical systems.
