We employed organic heterojunction films as all-organic connecting units to fabricate tandem organic photovoltaic cells by continuous deposition. The all-organic connecting units with a better transparence and a lower sublimation temperature became an effective recombination center for electrons and holes photogenerated in front cell and back cell, respectively. Tunnel mechanism was proposed to explain the combination of photogenerated carrier.

We developed a series of highly efficient blue electroluminescent polymers with dopant-host systems and molecular dispersion features by selecting 1,8-naphthalimide derivatives as the light blue emissive dopant units, choosing polyfluorene as the deep blue emissive polymer host and covalently attaching the dopant units to the side chain of the polymer host. The polymers' EL spectra exhibited both deep blue emission from the polymer host and light blue emission from the dopant units because of the energy transfer and charge trapping from the polymer host to the dopant units.

Three series of poly(phenylene vinylene) (PPV) derivatives containing hole-transporting triphenylamine derivatives [N-(4-octoxylphenyl)diphenylamine, N,N'-di(4-octyloxylphenyl)-N,N'-diphenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine, and N,N'-di(4-octoxylphenyl)-N,N'-diphenylbenzidine] (donor) and electron-transporting oxadiazole unit (2,5-diphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole) (acceptor) in the main chain were synthesized by improved Wittig copolymerization. The resulting donor-acceptor (D-A) polymers are readily soluble in common organic solvents, such as chloroform, dichloroethane, THF, and toluene.

A series of donor-acceptor low-bandgap conjugated polymers, i.e., PTnBT (n = 2-6), composed of alternating oligothiophene (OTh) and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BT) units were synthesized by Stille cross-coupling polymerization. The number of thiophene rings in OTh units, that is n, was tuned from 2 to 6. All these polymers display two absorption bands in both solutions and films with absorption maxima depending on n. From solution to film, absorption spectra of the polymers exhibit a noticeable red shift. Both high- and low-energy absorption bands or P'F5BT and PT6BT films locate in the visible region, which are at 468 and 662 nm for PT5BT and 494 and 657 nm for PT6BT.

By utilizing 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline:Li/MoO3 as an effective charge generation layer (CGL), we extend our recently demonstrated single-emitting-layer white organic light-emitting diode (WOLED) to realize an extremely high-efficiency tandem WOLED. This stacked device achieves maximum forward viewing current efficiency of 110.9 cd/A and external quantum efficiency of 43.3% at 1 mu A/cm(2) and emits stable white light with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage coordinates of (0.34, 0.41) at 16 V. It is noted that the combination of effective single units and CGL is key prerequisite for realizing high-performance tandem WOLEDs.

A white electroluminescent single polymer system with both high electroluminescence efficiency and excellent color rendering index (CRI) value is developed by covalently attaching blue, green, and red dopant units as individual light-emitting species to the side chain of polyfluorene as individual polymer host. A luminous efficiency of 8.6 cd A(-1), CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.36) and CRI value of 88 was demonstrated with their single-layer devices.

A series of eight new polyquinolines and polyanthrazolines with pyrrole isomeric units in main chain were synthesized and characterized. The new polymers showed high glass transition temperatures (T-g = 242-339 degreesC) and excellent thermal stability (T-5% = 398-536 degreesC in air, TGA). Compared to the series of polyanthrazolines, the series of polyquinolines exhibited higher thermal stability, better solubility in common organic solvents, and lower maximum absorption wavelengths (lambda(max)(a)). Polyanthrazolines with 2,5-pyrrole linkage showed an unusually high lambda(max)(a) (565 nm) and small band gap (2.02 eV). All polymers in solution had low photoluminescence quantum yields between 10(-2%) and 10(-5%) and excited-state lifetimes of 0.28-1.29 ns. The effects of molecular structure, especially pyrrole linkage structures, on the electronic structure, thermodynamics, and some of the optical properties of the polymers were explored. A model of hydrogen bonds in the main chain of the polymers was suggested to explain the difference in the properties of the isomer polymers. In addition, a polyquinoline (PBM) was chosen to examine the proton conductivity; the result indicated that the PBM/H3PO4 complex exhibited a high conductivity of 1.5 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) at 157 degreesC.

A conjugated poly(p-CN-phenylenevinylene) (PCNPV) containing both electron-donating triphenylamine units and electron-withdrawing cyano groups was prepared via Knoevenagel condensation in a good yield. Gel permeation chromatography suggested that the soluble polymer had a very high weight-average molecular weight of 309,000. A bright and saturated red emission was observed under UV excitation in solution and film. Cyclic voltammetry showed that the polymer presented quasi-reversible oxidation with a relatively low potential because of the triphenylamine unit. A single-layer indium tin oxide/PCNPV/Mg-Ag device emitted a bright red light (633 nm).

A novel bipolar conjugated polymer containing triphenylamine and 1, 3, 4-oxadiazole units was synthesized by Suzuki reaction. Its structure and properties were characterized by NMR, IR, UV-Vis, PL spectroscopy and electrochemical measurement. The photo luminescent spectroscopy and cyclic voltammograms measurement demonstrated that the resulting polymer shows blue emission (477 nm) and possesses both electron and hole-transporting property.

Cyclic oligomers containing hexafluoroiso-propylidene(HFIP) units were prepared in excellent yields by a nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction of 4,4(7)- (hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphenol with difluoro-monomers in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate under pseudo high dilution conditions. A combination of GPC, MALDI-TOF MS and NMR analysis confirmed the structure of the cyclic oligomers. All macrocyclic oligomers are crystalline and undergo facile melt polymerization to give high molecular weight fluorinated polyethers.

Two new blue light-emitting PPV-based conjugated copolymers containing both an electron-withdrawing unit (triazole-TAZ) and electron-rich moieties (carbazole-CAR and bicarbazole-BCAR) were prepared by Wittig condensation polymerization between the triazole diphosphonium salt and the corresponding dialdehyde monomers. Their structures and properties were characterized by FT-IR, TGA, DSC, UV-Vis, PL spectroscopy and electrochemical measurements. The resulting copolymers are soluble in common organic solvents and thermally stable with a T-g of 147degreesC for TAZ-CAR-PPV and of 157degreesC for TAZ-BCAR-PPV. The maximum photoluminescence wavelengths of TAZ-CAR-PPV and TAZ-BCAR-PPV film appear at 460 nm and 480 nm, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry measurement demonstrates that TAZ-BCAR-PPV has good electrochemical reversibility, while TAZ-CAR-PPV exhibits the irreversible redox process. The triazole unit was found to be an effective pi-conjugation interrupter and can play the rigid spacer role in determining the emission colour of the resulting copolymer.

A series of light-emitting poly(p-phenylene vinylene)s with triphenylamine units as hole-transporting moieties in the main chain were synthesized via Wittig condensation in good yields. The newly formed vinylene double bonds possessed a trans configuration, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and NMR spectroscopy. The high glass-transition temperature (83-155 degreesC) and high decomposition temperature (> 300 degreesC) suggested that the resulting copolymers possessed high thermal stability. These copolymers, especially TAAPV1, possessed a high weight-average molecular weight (47,144) and a low polydispersity index (1.55). All the copolymers could be dissolved in common organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), CHCl3, CH2Cl2, and toluene, and exhibited intense photoluminesence in THF (the emission maxima were located from 478 to 535 nm) and in film (from 478 to 578 nm). The low onsets of the oxidation potential (0.6-0.75 V) suggested that the alternating copolymers possessed a good hole-transporting property due to the incorporation of triphenylamine moieties. The structural and morphological evolution of mono-domains in thin films has been investigated for a series of liquid crystalline (LC) copolyethers. The copolyethers studied were synthesized by the reaction of 1-(4-hydroxy-4 ' -biphenylyl)-2-(4-hydroxyl-phenyl)propane (TPP) with 1,7-dibromoheptane and 1,11-undecane at different compositions (coTPPs-7/11). In contrast to the solution-cast thin films without annealing, which exhibit the isotropic homogeneous molecular orientation, mono-domains with a homeotropic alignment were found in coTPP-7/11(5/5) after the thin films were annealed in the high-temperature columnar phase (Phi '). Similar to the nucleation process in polymer crystallization, transmission electron microscopic observations show that small mono-domains appear in the initial stage of annealing, where molecules form a uniaxial in-plane chain orientation. With increasing annealing time, the molecular orientation gradually became tilted with respect to the substrate surface, and finally, a uniaxial homeotropic molecular orientation was achieved after a prolonged annealing time. The lateral size of mono-domains was found to increase continuously with annealing time and grew into a circular shape, indicating an isotropic lateral growth scheme which implies a hexagonal molecular packing proved by the electron diffraction experiments.
