A quantitative analysis of the individual compounds in tobacco essential oils is performed by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC x GC) combined with flame ionization detector (FID). A time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF/MS) was coupled to GC x GC for the identification of the resolved peaks. The response of a flame ionization detector to different compound classes was calibrated using multiple internal standards. In total, 172 compounds were identified with good match and 61 compounds with high probability value were reliably quantified. For comparative purposes, the essential oil sample was also quantified by one-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with multiple internal standards method. The results showed that there was close agreement between the two analysis methods when the peak purity and match quality in one-dimensional GC/MS are high enough. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. This paper presents a method for trace level analysis of microcystins in water using solid-phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography. The optimized condition enabled the determination of common microcystins at levels as low as 0.02 similar to 0.05 mug/L, and the liner range is from 0.1 mug/L to 50 mug/L. The method has been applied to the analysis of field sample from Dianchi lake.

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) in vegetables were determined by stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) and capillary gas chromatography with thermionic specific detection (TSD). Hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsioxane (PDMS) prepared by sol-gel method was used as extraction phase. The effects of extraction temperature, salting out, extraction time on extraction efficiency were studied. The detection limits of OPPs in water were <= 1.2 ng/l. This method was also applied to the analysis of OPPs in vegetable samples and matrix effect was studied. Linear ranges of OPPs in vegetable samples were 0.05-50 ng/g with detection limits <= 0. 15 ng/g and the repeatability of the method was less than 20% relative standard deviation. A flow injection system for the determination of organophosphate and carbamate pesticides is described. A sensitive fluorescence probe was synthesized and used as the pH indicator to detect the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (ACNE). The percentage inhibition of enzyme activity is correlated to the pesticide concentration. Several parameters influencing the performance of the system are discussed. The detection limits of 3.5, 50, 12 and 25 mug/l for carbofuran, carbaryl, paraoxon and dichlorvos, in pure water, respectively were achieved with an incubation time of 10 min. A complete cycle of analysis, including incubation time, took 14 min. The detection system has been applied to the determination of carbofuran in spiked vegetable juices (Chinese cabbage and cole), achieving recovery values between 93.2 and 107% for Chinese cabbage juice and 108 and 118% for cole juice at the different concentration levels assayed. A novel method for the determination of N-acetylneuraminic acid (NANA) and N-glycolylneuraminic acid (NGNA) has been developed using high-performance capillary electrophoresis with UV detection at 195 nm, without pre or post-column derivatisation. The acids were separated in a 50-cm, fused-silica capillary (50 mu m i.d, 45.5-cm effective length) with Na2B4O7-Na2HPO4 buffer. The detection limit for NANA is a concentration of 9.6 x 10(-6) M or, in terms of mass: 3.879 x 10(-14) mol (39 fmol). This method is applicable to determination of NANA in normal human serum. The results were also compared with those of the colorimetrie method.

A novel tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)3(2+)) cathodic electrochemiluminescence (ECL) was generated at -0.78V at the Pt electrode in acetonitrile (ACN), which suggested that the cathodic ECL differed from conventional cathodic ECL It was found that tripropylamine (TPrA) could enhance this cathodic ECL and the linear range (log-log plot) was 0.2 mu M-0.2 mM. In addition, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) could inhibit the cathodic ECL and was indirectly detected with the linear range of 27-540 mu M. The RSD (n = 12) of the ECL intensity in the presence of 135 mu M H2O2 was 0.87%. This method was also demonstrated for the fast determination of H2O2 in disinfectant sample and satisfactory results were obtained.

In this work, a method was established for the determination of impurities in high purity tellurium by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after Fe(OH)(3) coprecipitation. After comparison of coprecipitation ability and separation efficiency between Fe(OH), and Al(OH)(3), Fe(OH)(3) was chosen as the precipitate. A separation factor of 160 for 200 mg tellurium was obtained under conditions of pH 9 and 2 mg of Fe3(+). The 13 elements, such as Bi, Sn, Pb, In, Tl, Cd, Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Ti, Be and Zr, could be almost completely coprecipitated under these conditions. In addition, Te memory effect imposed on the ICP-MS instrument was assessed, as well as Te matrix effect that caused the low recovery of Ga, As, Sb and V in real sample was discussed. Finally, the method was evaluated through recovery test and was applied to practical sample analysis, with detection limits of most of the elements being below 0.15 mug g(-1) and R.S.D. below or at approximately 10%, which indicated that this method could fully satisfy the requirements for analysis of 99.999% similar to 99.9999% high purity Te.

Background: Capillary electrophoresis (CE) with tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) [Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)]-electro-generated chemiluminescence (ECL) detection is a promising method for clinical analysis. In this study, a method combining CE with Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) ECL (CE-ECL) detection that can be applied to amine-containing clinical species was developed, and the performance of CE-ECL as a quantitative method for determination of sulpiride in human plasma or urine was evaluated. Methods: Sulpiride was separated by capillary zone electrophoresis in uncoated fused-silica capillaries [510 cm x 25 mum (i.d.)] filled with phosphate buffer (pH 8.0 and a driving voltage of +15 kV, with end-column Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) ECL detection. A platinum disc electrode was used as working electrode. Sulpiride in human plasma or urine samples (100 muL) was extracted by a double-step liquid-liquid extraction procedure, dried under nitrogen at 35 degreesC in a water bath, and reconstituted with 100 muL of filtered water. The extraction solvent was ethyl acetate-dichloromethane (5:1 by volume). Results: Under optimum conditions (pH 8.0 phosphate buffer, injection for 6 s at 10 kV, and +1.2 V as detection potential), separation of sulpiride was accomplished within 4 min. The calibration curve was linear over a concentration range of 0.05-25.0 mumol/L, and the limit of detection was 2.9 x 10(-8) mol/L for sulpiride. Intra- and interday CVs for ECL intensities were <6%. Extraction recoveries of sulpiride were 95.6-101% with CVs of 2.9-6.0%. The method was, clinically validated for patient plasma and urine samples. Conclusions: CE combined with Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) ECL is reproducible, precise, selective, and enables the analysis of sulpiride in human plasma and urine. It thus is of value for rapid and efficient analysis of amine-containing analytes of clinical interest.

A novel method for the sensitive and selective determination of peroxydisulfate was proposed. It was based on an electrochemiluminescent method with Cr(bpy)(3)(3+). The applied potential was set at -0.5 V in Cr(bpy)(3)(3+) system which was much more positive than those in Ru(bpz)(3)(2+) and Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) systems. A linear calibration was obtained over the range of 7-100 mu mol l(-1) with a correlation coefficient of 0.993. The relative standard deviation was 2% for 10 replicate injections of 0.01 mol l(-1) S2O82- solution. The detection limit (S/N=3) was 1 mu mol l(-1). The method was successfully applied to determination of peroxydisulfate in phase transfer catalysis. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
