Laser conditioning effects of the dielectric mirror coatings with different designs were investigated. Simple quarter-wave ZrO2:Y2O3/SiO2 mirrors and half-wave SiO2 over-coated ZrO2:Y2O3/SiO2 mirror coatings were fabricated by E-beam evaporation (EBE). The absorbance of the samples before and after laser conditioning was measured by surface thermal lensing (STL) technology and the defects density was detected under Nomarski microscope. The enhancement of the laser damage resistance was found after laser conditioning. The dependence of the laser conditioning on the coating design was also observed and the over-coated sample obtained greatest enhancement, whereas the absorbance of the samples did not change obviously. During the sub-threshold fluence raster scanning, the minor damage about defects size was found and the assumption of pre-damage mechanism, based on the functional damage concept, was put forward. The improvement of the laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) was attributed to the benign damage of the defects and the dependence on the coating design owed to the damage growth behavior of different coating designs. Repeated vivid recalls or flashbacks of traumatic memories and memory deficits are the cardinal features of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The underlying mechanisms are not fully understood yet. Here, we examined the effects of very strong fear conditioning (20 pairings of a light with a 1.5-mA, 0.5-s foot shock) and subsequent reexposure to the conditioning context (chamber A), a similar context (chamber B), and/or to the fear conditioned stimulus (CS) (a light) on synaptic plasticity in the hippocampal CA1 area in anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats. The conditioning procedure resulted in very strong conditioned fear, as reflected by high levels of persistent freezing, to both the contexts and to the CS, 24 h after fear conditioning. The induction of long-term potentiation ON was blocked immediately after fear conditioning. It was still markedly impaired 24 h after fear conditioning; reexposure to the conditioning chamber A (CA) or to a similar chamber 13 (CB) did not affect the impairment. However, presentation of the CS in the CA exacerbated the impairment of LTP, whereas the CS presentation in a CB ameliorated the impairment so that LTP induction did not differ from that of control groups. The induction of long-term depression (LTD) was facilitated immediately, but not 24 h, after fear conditioning. Only reexposure to the CS in the CA, but not reexposure to either chamber A or B alone, or the CS in chamber B, 24 h after conditioning, reinstated the facilitation of LTD induction. These data demonstrate that unconditioned and conditioned aversive stimuli in an intense fear conditioning paradigm can have profound effects on hippocampal synaptic plasticity, which may aid to understand the mechanisms underlying impairments of hippocampus-dependent memory by stress or in PTSD. The objectives of this work were to study the effects of several feeding stimulants on gibel carp fed diets with or without replacement of fish meal by meat and bone meal (MBM). The feeding stimulants tested were betaine, glycine, L-lysine, L-methionine, L-phenylalanine, and a commercial squid extract. Three inclusion levels were tested for each stimulant (0.18, 0.5%, and 1% for betaine and 0.1, 0.25 and 0.5% for the other stimulants). Two basal diets (40% crude protein) were used. one with 26% fish meal (FM), and the other with 21% fish meal and 6% MBM, Betaine at 0.1% in the fish meal group and at 0.5% in the meat and bone meal group was used in all experiments for comparison among stimulants. In the experiment on each stimulant, six tanks of fish were equally divided into two groups, one fed the FM diet, and the other fed the MBM diet. After 7 days' adaptation to the basal diet, in which the fish were fed to satiation twice a day, the fish were fed for another 7 days an equal mixture of diets containing varying levels of stimulants. Each diet contained a unique rare earth oxide as inert marker (Y2O3, Yb2O3, La2O3, Sm2O3 or Nd2O3). During the last 3 days of the experiment, faeces from each tank were collected. Preference for each diet was estimated based on the relative concentration of each marker in the faeces. Gibel carp fed the FM diet had higher intake than those fed the MBM diet, but the difference was significant only in the experiments on betaine, glycine and L-methionine. None of the feeding stimulants tested showed feeding enhancing effects in FM diets. All feeding stimulants showed feeding enhancing effects in MBM diets. and the optimum inclusion level was 0.5% for betaine, 0.1% for glycine, 0.25% for L-lysine, 0.1% for L-methionine. 0.25% For L-phenylalanine. and 0.1% for squid extract. The squid extract had the strongest stimulating effect among all the stimulants tested. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents an two weighted neural network approach to determine the delay time for a heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) plan to respond to control actions. The two weighted neural network is a fully connected four-layer network. An acceleration technique was used to improve the General Delta Rule for the learning process. Experimental data for heating and cooling modes were used with both the two weighted neural network and a traditional mathematical method to determine the delay time. The results show that two weighted neural networks can be used effectively determining the delay time for AVAC systems.

The stability of the excellent permanent magnetic compound Nd2Fe14B and substitution of Fe in the compound by V, Cr, Mn, Zr and Nb are investigated by using interatomic pair potentials which are converted from lattice-inversion method. Calculation shows that the substitution always makes the cell volume larger, and the increase of the volume is almost linear with substituent concentration. The calculated cohesive energy shows that the preferential order of substitution of Fe is Nb, V, Cr, Mn, Zr. Nevertheless, all the five substituting elements should most preferentially replace Fe in the j(2)' site, which has the greatest space among all six Fe sites. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Density functional calculations have been employed to investigate the locating and binding of lanthanum cation, i.e., La(OH)(2)(+), on HZSM-5 zeolite. Through geometry optimization, it was determined that lanthanum ions are favorably accommodated in the two 6-T rings of the straight channels (Clusters 1 and 2, see Sec. III A for details). Cluster 1 was found to exist in prior to Cluster 2 due to the preference of Al substitution in the T11 site (Cluster 1) rather than in the T8 site (Cluster 2). Geometry-optimization of Cluster 1 containing another two lanthanide ions Nd3+ and Yb3+ was also carried out and it was found that a monotonic decrease in Ln-O bond length will take place as the atomic number increases, conforming well to the rule of lanthanide contraction. Some of the optimized parameters are comparable to the corresponding experimental values in Y zeolite, which confirms that the optimized configurations are acceptable. The average frequencies of hydroxyls attached to La3+ or Yb3+ in Cluster 1 fall at 3609.16 and 3579.76 cm(-1), respectively, with the gap of these two frequencies close to that in the sodalite cage of Y zeolite. Compared to H-form zeolite, the charges on both Al and O atoms in Ln-ZSM-5 zeolite show an obvious increase, which will undoubtedly lead to a stronger mutual interaction and hence enhance the stability of the [AlO4](-) anion. Moreover, the Ln(OH)(2)(+) seem to have thickened the zeolite framework, which can effectively retard the process of dealumination. Through the evaluation of the possibility for dimer formation, it turned out that when the exchange degree arrived to approximately 0.28, lanthanum monomers began to aggregate into dimers, and were completely converted into dimers when the exchange degree approached 0.60.
