The effect of PMR-polyimide(POI) as the interfacial agent on the interface characteristics, morphology features and crystallization of poly (ether sulfone) /poly (phenylene sulfide) (PES/PPS) and poly(ether ether ketone)/poly (ether sulfone) (PEEK/PES) partly miscible blends were investigated by means of the scanning electron microscopy, WAXD and XPS surface analysis. It is found that the interfacial adhesion was enhanced remarkably, the size of the dispersed phase particles was reduced significantly and the miscibility was improved by the addition of POI. During melt blending cross-link and/or grafting reaction of POI with PES, PEEK and PPS homopolymers was detected, however the reaction activity of POI with PPS was much higher than that of PES and PEEK. It was also found that POI was an effective nucleation agent of the crystallization of PPS.

Aimed at saving the radiation dose required to crosslinking the polyamid-1010, BMI/PA1010 systems containing different amounts of difunctional crosslinking agent N,N'-bis-maleimide-4,4'-biphenyl methane (BMI) were prepared and the structure changes at the crystallographic and supermolecular levels before and after irradiation were studied by using WAXD, SAXS, and DSC techniques. It was found that by incorporation of BMI the microcrystal size L-100 is lowered due to the formation of hydrogen bond between the carbonyl oxygen of BMI and the amide hydrogen of PA1010 in the hydrogen bonded plane, and the overall crystallinity W-c is also decreased. The presence of BMI causes the crystal lamella thickness d(c) to decrease and greatly thickens the transition zone d(tr) between the crystalline and amorphous regions. As for the irradiated specimen, the maximum increments in the L-100 and W-c against dose curves decrease with BMI content, and the interception point D-i, at which the L-100 and W-c curves intercept their respective horizontal line of L-100/L-100(0) and W-c/W-c(0)=1, shift to lower dose with an increase in BMI concentration. In addition. the mechanism of the radiation chemical reactions in the three different phases under the action of BMI are discussed with special focus on the interface region. From the angle of energy transformation an equation was obtained for the brittle transition in polymer blends. The effects of interparticle distance, temperature and strain rate on the brittle-tough transition in polymer blends were characterized by this equation. The calculations show that, for this transition: (1) increasing temperature and decreasing interparticle distance are equivalent and the shift factor increases with increasing temperature; (2) decreasing strain rate and decreasing interparticle distance have equivalent effects on the transition; (3) the strain rate must be optimum in order to find the brittle-tough transition phenomena for a given temperature region. This work presents the structure and impact properties of phenolphthalein poly(ether sulfone) blended with ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (PES-C/UHMWPE) at different compositions. The addition of UHMWPE can considerably improve the Charpy and Izod impact strength of the blends. The fracture surface is examined to demonstrate the toughening mechanics related to the modified PES-C resin. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The parameters which effect the cavitation strain of polymer blends toughened with a shear yield mechanism have been studied by analysis of the stress acted on the equatorial plane of dispersed-phase particles. As a result, the cavitation strain of polymer blends depends on the Young's modulus and the Poisson's ratio of the dispersed-phase particles and the matrix and also on the break stress of dispersed-phase particles. We tried to provide a criterion for selecting the materials used as dispersed-phase particles which can effectively enhance the toughness of polymer blends. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

From an analysis of the literature and our experimental results, we have established that interfacial tension is a function of the concentration of a compatibilizer, and put forward a 'three-stage' physical model to account for the compatibilizing behavio

For perhaps the first time, the dynamics of liquid-liquid phase separation was studied by time-resolved mechanical spectrometry in order to establish the relationship between blends' properties and the phase structures during spinodal decomposition (SD). The selected system was chlorinated polyethylene (CPE)/ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA). It was found that in the early and intermediate stage of SD, the storage modulus (G') and the loss modulus (G'') increase with time after the initiation of the isothermal phase separation; in the later stage, G' and G'' decrease as phase separation proceeds. An entanglement fluctuation model was presented to manifest this phenomenon; it was found that the rheological behavior agrees well with the expections of the model in the early stage. For the later stage, the reduction of G' and G'' can be attributed to the increment of phase-domain size. (C) 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A statistical thermodynamics theory of polydisperse polymer mixtures with strong interaction between dissimilar components based on a lattice fluid model is formulated. Expressions for the free energy, equation of state, phase stability and spinodal for a polydisperse, binary polymer mixture with strong interaction are derived.

The feasibility of applying the method of factor analysis to X-ray diffraction diagrams of binary blends of polypropylene and ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (PP/EPDM) was examined. The result of mathematical treatment was satisfactory. The number of scattering species and their concentrations in six kinds of PP/EPDM blends were determined. The separation of the spectral peaks of each species in the blends, contributing spectral intensities, was carried out.

Thermal behaviour of gamma-irradiated plain PA1010 and PA1010 containing different amounts of difunctional cross-linking agent BMI was investigated. In DSC endo- and exotherm, it was found that during irradiation, the presence of BMI markedly changes the melting and crystallisation characteristics of PA1010. A supposition that the network of BMI-containing specimens is rather loose in structure was proposed to explain the discrepancy in thermal behaviour between these two kinds of specimens. The supposition was further ascertained by the less brittleness in mechanical property of specimens containing BMI. Besides, the complexity of the thermal behaviour of gamma-irradiated PA1010 was discussed and attributed mainly to the increase in sigma-e, the fold surface free energy of chain fold crystals.

Fractal behaviour of ramified domains in the late stage of spinodal phase separation in a binary polymer blend of poly(vinyl acetate) with poly(methyl methacrylate) was investigated by optical microscopic method. In the late stage of the spinodal decomposition, the fractal dimension D is about 1.64. It implies that some anomalous properties of irregular structure probably may be explained by fractal concepts.

The miscibility and mechanical properties of the blends of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polypropylene (PP) with a liquid crystalline ionomer (LCI) containing a sulfonate group on the terminal unit as a compatibilizer were assessed. SEM and optical microscopy (POM) were used to examine the morphology of blends of PBT/PP compatibilized by LCI. DSC and TGA were used to discuss the thermal properties of PBT/PP blends with LCI and without LCI. The experimental results revealed that the LCI component affect, to a great extent, the miscibility and crystallization process and mechanical property of PBT/PP blends, The fact is that increasing LCI did improve miscibility of PBT/PP blends and the addition of 1% LCI to the PBT/PP blends increased the ultimate tensile strength and the ultimate elongation.
