Copper nanoparticles were deposited onto mesoporous SBA-15 support via two different routes: post-grafting method and incipient wet impregnation method. Both XRD and TEM reveal that the post-grafting can make Cu particles very small in size and highly dispersed into channels of SBA-15, while the impregnation method mainly forms large Cu particles on the external surface of SBA-15. TPR experiments show that CuO species formed by the post-grafting method is more reducible than that prepared by the impregnation method. The catalytic activity tests for CO oxidation manifests that the sample prepared by the post-grafting method has a much higher activity than that prepared by the impregnation method, with a lowering of 50 degrees C for T-50, showing a strong dependence of catalytic activity on the size and dispersion of Cu particles. Besides the preparation procedure, other factors including calcination temperature, reduction treatment, copper loading as well as the feed composition, have an important effect on the catalytic activity. The best performance was obtained when the catalyst was calcined at 500 degrees C and reduced at 550 degrees C. The calcination and reduction treatment at high temperature have been found to be necessary to completely remove the organic residue and to generate active metallic copper particles. A comprehensive study of the low-temperature oxidation of CO was conducted over Pd/TiO2, Pd/CeO2, and Pd/CeO2-TiO2 pretreated by a series of calcination and reduction processes. The catalysts were characterized by N-2 adsorption, XRD, H-2 chemisorption, and diffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The results indicated that Pd/CeO2-TiO2 has the highest activity among these catalysts, whether in the calcined state or in the reduced state. The activity of all of the catalysts can be improved significantly by the pre-reduction, and it seems that the reduction at low temperature (LTR. 150 degrees C) is more effective than that at high temperature (HTR, 500 degrees C), especially for Pd/CeO2 and Pd/TiO2. The catalysts with various supports and pretreatments are also different in the reaction mechanisms for CO oxidation at low temperature. Over Pd/TiO2, the reaction may proceed through a surface reaction between the weakly adsorbed CO and oxygen (Langmuir-Hinshelwood). For Ce-containing catalysts, however, an alteration of reaction mechanism with temperature and the involvement of the oxygen activation at different sites were observed, and the light-off profiles of the calcined Pd/CeO2 and Pd/CeOi-TiO2 show a distortion before CO conversion achieves 100%. At low temperature, CO oxidation proceeds mainly via the reaction between the adsorbed CO on Pd-0 sites and the lattice oxygen of surface CeO2 at the Pd-Ce interface, whereas at high temperature it proceeds via the reaction between the adsorbed CO and oxygen. The high activity of Pd/CeO2-TiO2 for the low-temperature CO oxidation was probably due to the enhancements of both CO activation, caused by the facilitated reduction of Pd2+ to Pd-0, and oxygen activation, through the improvement of the surface oxygen supply and the oxygen vacancies formation. The reduction pretreatment enhances metal-support interactions and oxygen vacancy formation and hence improves the activity of CO oxidation. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The effect of HCl and SO_2 on CO oxidation in pulverised coal flames was investigated experimentally and kinetically in an entrained flow combustion reactor. Two bituminous coals (German 'Goettelborn' and a Polish coal) were used as fuels with a feeding rate of 1 or 1.5 kg/h. HCl or SO_2 is introduced into the reactor premixed with the primary air. Experimental results indicate that HCl addition may inhibit CO oxidation in coal flames and increases CO emission. Reducing temperature in the reactor will enhance the inhibitory effect of HCl on CO oxidation. The measured CO profiles along the reactor height clearly show that the addition of HCl may inhibit CO oxidation. In the experimental range of SO_2 addition. The inhibiting effect of SO_2 on CO oxidation is less significant than HCl. A detailed kinetic mechanism is used to model the reactions. And the controlling reactions are analysed.

The influence of HCl on CO and NO emissions was experimentally investigated in an entrained flow reactor (EFR) and an internally circulating fluidized bed (ICFB). The results in EFR show the addition of HCl inhibits CO oxidation and NO formation at 1073 K and 1123 K. At the lower temperature (1073 K) the inhibition of HCl becomes more obvious. In ICFB, chlorine-containing plastic (PVC) was added to increase the concentration of HCl during the combustion of coal or coke. Results show that HCl is likely to enhance the reduction of NO and N2O. HCl greatly increases CO and CH4 emission in the flue gas. A detailed mechanism of CO/NO/HCl/SO2 system was used to model the effect of HCl in combustion. The results indicate that HCl not only promotes the recombination of radicals O, H, and OH, but also accelerates the chemical equilibration of radicals. The influence of HCl on the radicals mainly occurs at 800-1200 K. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The paper studies the direct oxidation of ethanol and CO on PdO/Ce0.75Zr0.25O2 and Ce(0.75)Zr(0.2)5O(2) catalysts. Characterization of catalysts is carried out by temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR) techniques to correlate with catalytic properties and the effect of supports on PdO. The simple Ce0.75Zr0.25O2 is in less active for ethanol and CO oxidation. After loaded with PdO, the catalytic activity enhances effectively. Combined the ethanol and CO oxidation activity with CO-TPD and ethanol-TPSR profiles, we can find the more intensive of CO2 desorption peaks, the higher it is for the oxidation of CO and ethanol. Conversion versus yield plot shows the acetaldehyde is the primary product, the secondary products are acetic acid, ethyl acetate and ethylene, and the final product is CO2. A simplified reaction scheme (not surface mechanism) is suggested that ethanol is first oxidized to form intermediate of acetaldehyde, then acetic acid, ethyl acetate and ethylene formed going with the formation of acetaldehyde, acetic acid, ethyl acetate; finally these byproducts are further oxidized to produce CO2. PdO/Ce0.75Zr0.25O2 catalyst has much higher catalytic activity not only for the oxidation of ethanol but also for CO oxidation. Thus the CO poison effect on PdO/Ce0.75Zr0.25O2 catalysts can be decreased and they have the feasibility for application in direct alcohol fuel cell (DAFC) with high efficiency.

The electrostatic layer-by-layer assembly method was successfully used in a multilayer buildup of polyaniline (PANT) and platinum nanocrystals encapsulated in the carboxyl-terminated poly(amidoamine) dendrimers (generation 4.5 G4.5COOH) (Pt-G4.5COOH NPs) on solid substrates. Multilayer growth was monitored by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy. The AFM observation revealed a molecularly smooth (PANI/Pt-G4.5COOH NPs) multilayer film which is rougher and thicker than the multilayer of PANT and G4.5COOH (G4.5COOH/PANI)(m). The PANI/Pt-G4.5COOH NPs multilayers show a fast surface-confined electron-exchange process at the Au electrode in an acid solution, and remains stable, reversible and electroactive, even in neutral solution. Furthermore, the multilayers show a strong elect rocatalytic response towards CO oxidation and O-2 reduction, and the catalytic capability can be easily tuned by the control of multilayer thickness.

It is reported for the first time that the slow electrochemical kinetics process for the electro-oxidation of ethanol can be promoted by changing the electrochemical environment. The electro-oxidation of ethanol at a Pt electrode in the presence of Eu3+ cations was studied and an enhancement effect was exhibited. Cyclic voltammetry experiment results showed that the peak current density for the electro-oxidation of ethanol was increased in the presence of EU3+ in the ethanol solution. A preliminary discussion of the mechanism of the enhancement effect is given. This is based on a CO stripping experiment, which shows that either the onset potential or the peak potential of CO oxidation is shifted negatively after adding Eu3+ to the solution.

Catalytic reactions with different oxidation process were investigated and correlated to the electrochemical properties of the catalysts. The activity of suprafacial reaction is closely related to the area of redox peak, while that of the intrafacial one is to the match of redox potentials. Accordingly, it is supposed that cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurement could be a means for predicting the oxidation process in heterogeneous catalysis.

The activities of perovskites depend on compositions and preparation methods. Various perovskites, La1-xMxMnO3 (M=Ag, Sr, Ce, La), have been prepared by two different methods (co-precipitation and spray decomposition). The new preparation method, spray decomposition, produced perovskites of a high surface area of over 10 m(2)/g. The catalytic activities for CH4 and CO oxidation have been studied on a series of catalysts, La1-xMxMnO3. The perovskite-type oxide, La0.7Ag0.3MnO3, shows the highest catalytic activity: the complete conversion of CO and CH4 at 370 and 825 K, respectively. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Simultaneous nitrobenzene and phenol wet air oxidation was investigated in a stainless autoclave at temperature range of 180-220 ° C and 1.0 MPa oxygen partial pressure. Compared with the single oxidation of nitrobenzene under the same conditions, the presence of phenol in the reaction media greatly improved the removal efficiency of nitrobenzene. The effect of temperature on the reaction was studied. Phenol was considered as a type of initiator in the nitrobenzene oxidation. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Active site structure for NO decomposition carried out on perovskite-like oxides were discussed based on the N-2 yield measured from LaSrNi1-x,AlxO4 with different B-site cations and from La2-ySryCuO4 with different crystal phases. Results show that the active site contains two oxygen vacancies, two transition metals, and one lattice-oxygen, with the oxygen vacancy locating on the apex of MO6 octahedron, and the lattice oxygen locating between the two transition metals (i.e., M-O-M plane). Density functional theory (DFT) analysis to the structure shows that this new active site is the most active structure for NO adsorbing, and hence, for NO decomposition. The similar trend of the relative energies that are required for the formation of oxygen vacancies with f form (calculated from DFT), the amount of oxygen vacancies, and the activities (N-2 yield) certifies this result further.
