A novel form of ball-like carbon material with its size in micrometer range was prepared from coal with nickel as catalyst by arc plasma method. The carbon material has been systematically studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ultraviolet laser Raman spectroscopy. The SEM observation shows that the novel carbon material exists in various forms such as individual balls, net-like and plate-like forms, all of which have a quite smooth surface. The diameters of these carbon spheres are quite uniform and in a narrow range of 10-20 mum. The EDS analysis reveals that the ball-like carbon material contains more than 99.5% of carbon and a little amount of other elements such as nickel, silicon and aluminum, The XRD and UV-Raman results reveal that the novel carbon material is a kind of highly graphitized carbon. The growth mechanism of the ball-like carbon material was proposed and discussed in terms of arc plasma parameters and the chemical structure of coal-based carbon. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. The determination of disulfide bonds becomes an important aspect of obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the chemical structure of a protein. Numerous experimental methods have been developed for the determination of disulfide bonds in proteins. Modern mass spectrometry has developed as an important tool for the analysis of disulfide bond patterns due to its advantages of being simple, rapid and sensitive. The dissociations of the disulfide bonds were detected during the matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) analysis. These fragment ions were attributed to prompt fragmentation or “in-source decay” rather than “post-source decay”. For the double disulfide bonds, ions of plus sulfur and minus sulfur atoms corresponding to cleavages at different sites within the carbon-sulfur-sulfur-carbon disulfide bonds were also observed.

Pyrazoline derivatives have been used widely in dyeing industry as fluorescent whitening agents due to their excellent capability. According to Schellhammer theory of the relation between chemical structure and fluorescent quality, six new fluorescent compounds were designed and synthesized which contained the benzothiazole group in the I-pyrazoline, the indole group in the 3-pyrazoline and the derivatives of phenyl in the 5-pyrazoline. The structure of target compounds was confirmed by IR, H-1 NMR, MS and elementary analysis. The fluorescence spectra showed that these compounds had good fluorescence. They could absorb ultraviolet light at near 353 nm. The fluorescence maximum emission wavelengths were about 430-443 nm. It was a kind of promising fluorescence compounds. The largest fluorescence emission wavelength and the fluorescence intensity were related to the substituted group of the compounds. When the 6-Br group was introduced into benzothiazole, the fluorescence emission wavelength exhibited a blue shift, and the fluorescence intensity increased.

Atom transfer radical polymerization has been used to successfully synthesize polybutadiene. This was achieved by using MoO2Cl2/triphenyl phosphine as the catalyst and the various organic halide compounds such as methyl-2-chloropropionate, CCl4, 1,4-dichloromethyl benzene, I-phenylethyl chloride, and benzyl chloride as initiators. The monomer conversion increased up to 50% with polymerization time. The polydispersity indices of the polymers were as high as above 1.5. However, the polymerizations were controlled and the polydispersity indices of the polymers were less than 1.5 throughout the polymerization in reverse atom transfer radical polymerization. The chemical structure of the polymer obtained was characterized by (HNMR)-H-1 and FTIR. The valency states of molybdenum in this reactive system were detected by UV-vis spectra.

This review deals with polyimides based on isomeric dianhydrides and diamines, and with chiral polyimides. First, however, a summary is presented of recent work on the synthesis of isomeric dianhydrides, the reaction of mellophanic dianhydride with diamines, and the tendency toward cyclization in reactions of some dianhydrides and diamines. Then turning to polymers, the discussion covers solubility, thermal and dielectric properties, permeability and permselectivity for gas separation, and rheology of isomeric polyimides. Several useful general rules have been found: i.e. the glass transition temperature of polyimides based on isomeric dianhydrides with a given diamine decreases in the order 3,3'- > 3,4'- > 4,4-dianhydride if the polymers are of comparable molecular weight, whereas the thermal stability and the T-beta/T-g ratio (in absolute temperatures) increase in the order of 3,3'- < 3,4'- < 4,4'-dianhydride. Polyimides from 3,3'- or 3,4'-dianhydride have higher solubility than those from 4,4'-dianhydride. Polyimides from 3,4'-dianhydrides exhibit much lower melt viscosity than those from the other isomeric anhydrides. The dielectric constants of polyimides derived from m,m'-diamines are lower than those from p,p'-diamines. Polyimides based on 3,3'- or 3,4'-dianhydrides have higher permeability and slightly lower permselectivity than polyimides based on 4,4'-dianhydrides.

Biodegradable, amphiphilic, four-armed poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PCL-b-PEO) copolymers were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of ethylene oxide in the presence of four-armed poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) with terminal OH groups with diethylzinc (ZnEt2) as a catalyst. The chemical structure of PCL-b-PEO copolymer was confirmed by H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR. The hydroxyl end groups of the four-armed PC L were successfully substituted by PEO blocks in the copolymer. The monomodal profile of molecular weight distribution by gel permeation chromatography provided further evidence for the four-armed architecture of the copolymer. Physicochemical properties of the four-armed block copolymers differed from their starting four-armed PCL precursor. The melting points were between those of PCL precursor and linear poly(ethylene glycol). The length of the outer PEO blocks exhibited an obvious effect on the crystallizability of the block copolymer. The degree of swelling of the four-armed block copolymer increased with PEO length and PEO content.

An amino isopropoxyl strontium (Sr-PO) initiator, which was prepared by the reaction of propylene oxide with liquid strontium ammoniate solution, was used to carry out the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters to obtain aliphatic polyesters, such as poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(L-lactide) (PLLA). The Sr-PO initiator demonstrated an effective initiating activity for the ROP of epsilon-caprolactone (epsilon-CL) and L-lactide (LLA) under mild conditions and adjusted the molecular weight by the ratio of monomer to Sr-PO initiator. Block copolymer PCL-b-PLLA was prepared by sequential polymerization of epsilon-CL and LLA, which was demonstrated by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and gel permeation chromatography. The chemical structure of Sr-PO initiator was confirmed by elemental analysis of Sr and N, H-1 NMR analysis of the end groups in epsilon-CL oligomer, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The end groups of PCL were hydroxyl and isopropoxycarbonyl, and FTIR spectroscopy showed the coordination between Sr-PO initiator and model monomer gamma-butyrolactone. These experimental facts indicated that the ROP of cyclic esters followed a coordination-insertion mechanism, and cyclic esters exclusively inserted into the Sr-O bond.

The plateau modulus of polyphenylquinoxaline (PPQ-E) films has been obtained by from their dynamic mechanical properties curves. Using these data, the entanglement density of PPQ-E films, 2.37 X 10(26) m(-3) Or 0.39mmol/cm(3),has been estimated. The deformation mechanism of polyphenylquinoxaline (crazing mechanism,or shear yielding mechanism, or both), can be predicted according to entanglement density values. The changes in morphology of PPQ-E films during tensile deformation have been observed by Polarized Light Microscope. The result shows that crazing first appears in the tensile process, then shear yielding appears. It needs to point out that the craze is terminated by micro-shear band and the direction of craze in shear band is also changed, which prevents the craze growth into crack and avoid the failure of material. This result is in accordance with the prediction on the basis of the entanglement density data. The morphology and structure of crazes in PPB-E thin film have been determined by TEM. The craze morphology of PPQ-E is mainly fibril craze consisting of micro-fibrils and micro-voids,the interface between bulk and craze is distinct. Multiply crazes, blunting of craze tip and shear deformation zone are also observed. This result reflects the accordance of entanglement density and the morphology and structure of crazes.

Poly(ether diphenyl ether ketone) (PEDEK) synthesized by the nucleophilic route has the following chemical structure: [GRAPHICS] At some given temperatures for a given time isothermally crystallized PEDEK sample exhibits two endothermic peaks which are similar to PEEK and PEEKK The melting behavior of PEDEK crystallized from the glassy state is investigated through differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). We consider that the high-melting peak is related to the perfect crystals and the low-melting peak is associated with a few imperfect crystals. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The rheological properties of the novel engineering thermoplastic phenophthalein poly(ether ether ketone) (PEK-C) have been investigated using both a rotational and a capillary rheometer. The dependence of the viscosity on the shear rate and temperature was obtained. The activation energy was evaluated both from the Arrhenius and the Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) equation. An estimate for the proper E(eta) (dependent only on the chemical structure of the polymer) has been found from the WLF equation at temperatures about T-g + 200 degrees C. Measurements of the die swell have been performed. The first normal stress differences were evaluated from the die swell results and compared with the values obtained from the rotational rheometer at low shear rates.

The thermosetting polyimide PMR-I5 and its blends with thermoplastic polyimides have been studied by dynamic mechanical analysis. The results obtained indicate that the level of beta relaxations in PMR-15 are increased with an increase in cross-linking density. This phenomenon is interpreted as a change of chemical structure during the cross-linking process. Addition of thermoplastic polyimide makes the magnitude of beta relaxations increase when PMR-15 is the major component. This might be due to the strong intermolecular charge-transfer interaction between PI and PI or PMR-15 and PMR-15 molecular chains being partly replaced by the weak intermolecular interaction between PI and PMR-15 in PMR-15/PI blends, resulting in some phenylene rings or imide groups in PIs and PMR-15 chains being able to participate in beta relaxation. However, this increment in beta relaxation magnitude can be reduced by heat treatment of the sample, as a result of phase separation. Hence, it is concluded that the beta relaxation magnitude is determined by the number of groups which can participate in relaxation per unit length, i.e. the magnitude of beta relaxation increases with decreasing interaction between the molecular chains. The miscibility and crystallization behaviour of the blends of poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) with two thermoplastic polyimides (PI), PEI-E and YS-30, prepared by solution blending were studied by the use of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.) and polarizing microscopy techniques. The results obtained show that PEEK/YS-30 is miscible, while PEEK/PEI-E is partially miscible only in the composition range with PEI-E content up to 20 wt%. The crystallization behaviour of PEEK in PEEK/PI blends depends on the crystallization condition of the blend sample as well as the chemical structure and the content of the PI added. Our SAXS results indicate that the segregation of PI molecular chains during crystallization of PEEK chains in the blends is interfibrillar for PEEK/PEI-E blends, but interlamellar for PEEK/YS-30 blends. The compatibility and the crystallization behaviour are discussed in terms of charge transfer interaction between PI and PI molecules and between PI and PEEK molecules.
