In previous growth experiments with carnivorous southern catfish (Silurus meridionalis), the non-fecal energy lose was positively related to dietary. carbohydrate level. To test whether metabolic energy expenditure accounts for such energy loss, an experiment was performed with southern catfish juveniles (33.2-71.9 g) to study the effect of dietary carbohydrate level on fasting metabolic rate and specific dynamic action (SDA) at 27.5 degreesC. The fasting metabolic rate in this catfish was increased with dietary carbohydrate level, and the specific dynamic action (SDA) coefficient (energy expended on SDA as percent of assimilated energy) was not affected by dietary carbohydrate level. The results suggest that in southern catfish, carbohydrate overfeeding increases metabolic rate to oxidize unwanted assimilated carbohydrate. A discussion on the poor capacity of intermediate metabolism for adapting dietary carbohydrate in carnivorous fish and its possible relationship with facultative component of SDA was also documented in this paper. The layered cobaltite Ca2.6Nd0.4Co4O9 was synthesized by the solid-state reaction. Their crystal structure was determined by the X-ray powder diffraction and CELL program. The prepared Ca2.6Nd0.4Co4O9 compound has the monoclinic symmetry. The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient were measured from room temperature to 700 degreesC in air. Both the properties increase while rising temperature. The thermoelectric power of Ca2.6Nd0.4Co4O9 is about 242.4 muV (.) K-1. The results imply a promising way to enhance the thermoelectric properties of the layered cobaltite oxides by optimizing their composition and microstructure.

Effect of Tb3+ on Ca2+ speciation in human plasma was studied by means of the computer program of MINTEQA2. When Tb3+ ions are not added into the system, Ca2+ ions mostly distribute in free Ca2+ (74.7%) and the surplus distributes in Ca2+ complexes, such as [CaHCO3](+) (7.9%),[Ca(Lac)](+) (6.4%), CaHPO4 (1.3%), [CaHistidinateThreoninateH(3)](3+) (2.4%), [CaCitrateHistidinateH(2)] (2.3%) and CaCO3 (1.1%). Tb3+ can compete with Ca2+ for inorganic as well as biological ligands. An increase of concentration of Tb3+ in the system results in an increase of content of free Ca2+ and a decrease of contents of Ca2+ complexes.

As a kind of supported bilayer lipid membranes, hybrid bilayer membrane (HBM) was applied to the interaction between Ca2+ and lipid for the first time. By using Fe(CN)(6)(3-) as a probe, we found that Ca2+ could induce the ion channel of HBM to be in open state. STM images study proved this phenomenon.

Effects of La3+ and Gd3+ on Ca2+ influx were investigated in rat hepatoma H-35 cells by measuring the initial rate of Ca-45(2+) uptake. It was found that the maximum initial rate of Ca2+ uptake was increased six- to ten-fold at low concentrations of La3+ and Gd3+. Kinetic analyses by measuring the initial rate of Ca2+ influx at different external Ca2+ concentrations indicated the existence of two intracellular exchangeable components in the basal Ca2+ system, with low and high affinities for Ca2+, and only one class of Ca2+ binding sites was observed in the La3+- or Gd3+-treated cells. For high affinity, La3+ and Gc(3+) increased both kinetic parameters K-m and V-max of basal Ca2+ influx. La3+ and Gd3+ compete directly with Ca2+ for Ca2+ binding site for low affinity. The kinetics is competitive.

Selectin-ligand interactions are crucial to such biological processes as inflammatory cascade or tumor metastasis. How transient formation and dissociation of selectin-ligand bonds in blood flow are coupled to molecular conformation at atomic level, however, has not been well understood. In this study, steered molecular dynamics (SMD) simulations were used to elucidate the intramolecular and intermolecular conformational evolutions involved in forced dissociation of three selectin-ligand systems: the construct consisting of P-selectin lectin (Lec) and epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like domains (P-LE) interacting with synthesized sulfoglycopeptide or SGP-3, P-LE with sialyl Lewis X (sLeX), and E-LE with sLeX. SMD simulations were based on newly built-up force field parameters including carbohydrate units and sulfated tyrosine(s) using an analogy approach. The simulations demonstrated that the complex dissociation was coupled to the molecular extension. While the intramolecular unraveling in P-LESGP-3 system mainly resulted from the destroy of the two anti-parallel sheets of EGF domain and the breakage of hydrogen-bond cluster at the Lec-EGF interface, the intermolecular dissociation was mainly determined by separation of fucose (FUC) from Ca2+ ion in all three systems. Conformational changes during forced dissociations depended on pulling velocities and forces, as well as on how the force was applied. This work provides an insight into better understanding of conformational changes and adhesive functionality of selectin-ligand interactions under external forces.
