The microcavity is sandwiched between a quarterwavelength distributed Bragg reflector(DBR) and a metal Ag reflective mirror. A single layer of a Tris(8-quinolinolato)aluminum (Alq) film was used as the light-emitting layer. The photoluminescent properties of the optical microcavity and that of the Alq film were studied at the same excitation condition. Compared with the Alq film, the significantly narrowed spectral emission linewidth from 90 nm to 10 nm was observed, the PL emission intensity of the microcavity at the resonant mode is enhanced by the order of 1. The spectral narrowing and intensity enhancement of the microcavity is attributed to the microcavity effect.

The spontaneous emission properties of a single layer organic film in plane optical microcavities were studied. Optical microcavity was formed by a Tris(8-quinolinolato) aluminium (Alq) film sandwiched between a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) and a Ag metallic reflector. Two kinds of microcavities were devised by using a different DBR structure. Compared with a Alq film, significantly spectral narrowing and intensity enhancement was observed in the two microcavities, which is attributed to the microcavity effect. The spectra characteristics of the two microcavities showed that the structure of DBR has much influence on the emission properties of a microcavity. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. In this paper, we report the optical properties of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles in hydrosols and those of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles in organosols in which the surfaces of the particles are coated by a layer of organic surfactant molecules. The photoluminescence spectra of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles in the hydrosols and organosols in different conditions were measured and discussed. We conclude that the surface structure of the SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles affects their optical properties strongly. The oxygen deficiencies on the surface of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles play an important role in the optical properties. The surface modification of the particles effectively removes the surface defects of the particles and enhances the intensity of luminescence.

Three organo-soluble polyimide powders have been synthesized. Their imidization was verified by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The amorphous morphology of their thin films were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Polyimide thin films were prepared by solution casting or spin coating. UV-visible transmission spectra of thin films revealed that they are almost transparent in the range of visible light. With in-plane orientation, revealed by FTIR spectra, negative birefringence (Delta n) of thin films were observed, and refractive indices of the thin films along the film plane (n(TE)) and normal to the plane (n(TM)) were measured by a prism coupler. Because of negative birefringence of the thin films, they tan be substituted for the compensation films for twisted nematic liquid crystal displays (TN-LCDs) to extend their viewing angles. In this paper, a 90 degrees C TN-LCD and 120 degrees C TN-LCD were taken as examples to show the compensation effect of thin films of a qualified polyimide. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. On the basis of ZINDO methods, according to the sum - over - states( SOS) expression, we divise the program for the calculation of nonlinear second - order optical susceptibilities beta(ijk) and study how the different substituents on the phenyl ring attached to the atom silicon influence or; the nonlinear second - order optical properties for substituted silanes series molecules. The property of (CH3)(3)Si is Studied particularly. The effect of length of silica chains on the calculated beta values is studied too. The regularity summarized from calculated results has been explained micromechanically.

A new solid solution series, NdSr(1-x)M(x)NiO(4) (M = Ca: 0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1.0; M = Ba: 0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.6), was synthesized by solid state reaction, and the structures, magnetic and electrical properties and optical spectra of this series have been studied. All the samples crystalized in tetragonal systems, with the exception of NdCaNiO4, which crystallized in the orthohombic system. IR spectra of NdSr1-xCaxNiO4 indicated that the lengths of two Ni-O bonds decrease with increasing Ca content. The electrical conduction changed from metallic-type to semiconductive-type when x greater than or equal to 0.4 (M = Ca, Ba), and the room temperature resistivities of NdSr1-xCaxNiO4 increased with the increase of Ca content. Magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed that Ni+3 ions in all the samplies were in low-spin state over the temperature range 77-300 K.

The synthesis of three new series of chiral Schiffs bases containing benzilideneaniline and 2-hydroxybenzilideneaniline moieties as mesogenic cores is presented. Differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarizing microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements were used to study the phase transition temperatures and behaviour. The results reveal that most of these materials show chiral smectic mesomorphism.

Dysprosium and ytterbium monophosphides have been prepared by the solid state reaction. The optical and electrical properties have been studied. Evidence that DyP and YbP are semiconductors has been obtained from the study of the absorption spectrum, the negative temperature coefficient of resistance and the rectifying effect. Their energy gaps are determined as 1.15 eV for DyP and 1.30 eV for YbP, electric conduction type is n-type, resistivities are about 10(-2) ohm cm and Hall mobility is 8.5-80 cm2/Vs. The p-n junction is formed on the LnP/Si.

Barium tungstate crystallites with different sizes and morphologies were successfully synthesized using a simple electro-chemical technique by varying the components of electrolyte solutions. XRD analysis evidenced that the as-prepared samples were a pure tetragonal-phase of BaWO4 with a scheelite structure. Scanning electron microscopy images and PL spectra of BaWO4 crystallites revealed that the presence of OH- ions and the incorporation of absolute ethanol into the electrolyte solution would have important effects on their particle sizes, morphologies, and optical properties.

Two isomorphous new candidates [M(mu(4)-pz25dc)](n) (M = Cd, 1; Zn, 2; pz25dc = pyrazine-2,5-dicarboxylato)for nonlinear optical (NLO) materials have been synthesized hydrothermally and characterized crystallographically as pillared-layer three-nodal frameworks with one four-connected metal nodes and two crystallographically different four-connected ligand nodes. Their optical non-linearities are measured by the Z-Scan technique with an 8 ns pulsed laser at 532 nm. These two coordination polymers both exhibit strong NLO absorptive abilities [alpha(2) = (63 +/- 6) x 10 (12) mW (1) 1, ( 46 +/- 6) x 10 (11) mW (1) 2] and effective self-focusing performance [n(2) = (67 +/- 5) x 10 (18) 1, (13 +/- 3) x 10 (18) m(2) W (1) 2] in 1.02 x 10 (4) 1 and 1.05 x 10 (4) mol dm (3) 2 DMF solution separately. The values of the limiting threshold are also measured from the optical limiting experimental data. The heavy atom effect plays important role in the enhancement of optical non-linearities and optical limiting properties. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

A slab optical waveguide (SOWG) has been used for study of adsorption of both methylene blue (MB) and new methylene blue (NMB) in liquid-solid interface. Adsorption characteristics of MB and NMB on both bare SOWG and silanized SOWG by octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODS) were compared. Effect of pH on adsorption on MB and NMB was investigated. Binding rate constant analysis showed that both MB and NMB on bare SOWG demonstrates larger association constants than those on ODS-SOWG. Interactions of NIB and NMB on bare SOWG and ODS-SOWG were analyzed by molecular mechanics calculation method. The binding energy change was in the following order: ENMB-bare > EMB-bare > ENMB-ODS > EMB-ODS. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
