A highly active and selective K-Pd/MnOx-ZrO2-ZnO catalyst for the one-step synthesis of 2-pentanone from ethanol is described. The possible reaction pathways for ethanol reaction over K-Pd/MnOx-ZrO2-ZnO catalyst were investigated by means of TPSR, CO2- and NH3-TPD techniques. The reactions were performed in a fixed bed continuous flow reactor. Complete conversion with high selectivity for 2-pentanone, was observed under 370 similar to 390degreesC, 2 similar to 4 MPa, GHSV = 8000 similar to 10,000 h(-1) and LHSV < 1.25 h(-1) conditions. Ethanol reactions over K-Pd/MnOx-ZrO2-ZnO catalyst showed that the catalyst could catalyze dehydrogenation. aldol. dehydration and hydrogenation reactions. Both acidic and basic properties are found on the surface of K-Pd/MnOx-ZrO2-ZnO catalyst, whose multifunctionality with the combination of basic, acid and metal sites may be responsible for the efficiency of the K-PdMnOx-ZrO2-ZnO catalyst. Nanocrystalline ZrO2:Eu was synthesized by complexing sol-gel method. The effects of heat treatment on structure, grain size and luminescence properties of ZrO2:Eu were studied with X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photoluminescence measurements. The dependence between the fluorescence emission and the crystalline structure is discussed. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Scandia and ceria doped zirconia samples, with 10 mol% SC2O3 and different content of CeO2, were synthesized and characterized. The XRD results depict that the sintered samples have a cubic phase structure. However, Raman spectra show that besides the main cubic phase, a secondary phase is also present in the sintered samples. The addition of CeO2 can raise the content of the cubic phase, but the minor metastable tetragonal phase (t'-phase) exists even at the CeO2 content as high as 10 mol%. The near-UV Raman spectra indicate that the deformed tetragonal structure predominates at the grain boundary. The addition of CeO2 can reduce the impurity at grain boundary, and no impurity can be found by near-UV Raman spectroscopy at the grain boundary of the samples with high CeO2 content. The impedance measurements show that with the increase of CeO2 content, the impedance of grain boundary decreases and the bulk impedance increases. The low impedance of grain boundary can be attributed to the formation of a clean grain boundary upon CeO2 doping, and the increase of the bulk impedance is due to the blocking effect of the large Ce(IV) ions. Pd-supported on WO3-ZrO2 (W/Zr atomic ratio=0.2) calcined at 1073 K was found to be highly active and selective for gas-phase oxidation of ethylene to acetic acid in the presence of water at 423 K and 0.6 MPa. Contact time dependence demonstrated that acetic acid is formed via acetaldehyde formed by a Wacker-type reaction, not through ethanol by hydration of ethylene.
