Three comb polymers(CP) with oligo-oxyethylene side chains of the type -O(CH2CH2O)(n)CH3 were prepared from methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride alternating copolymer. Homogeneous amorphous polymer electrolytes were made from CP and LiCF3SO3 or LiClO4 by solvent-casting method, and their conductivities were measured as a function of temperature and salt concentration. The conductivity which displayed non-Arrhenius behaviour was analyzed using the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equation. The conductivity maximum appears at lower salt concentration when CP has longer side chains. XPS was used to study the cation-polymer interaction.

The miscibility of blends of poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) has been investigated by means of NMR and DSC techniques. It is found that there are intermolecular interactions between the phenyl groups in SAN and carbonyl groups in PMMA or PEMA, and the strength of this intermolecular interaction strongly depends on the properties of ester side groups in PEMA or PMMA, composition of the blends and a certain composition of the copolymer. It is this specific interaction instead of the intramolecular repulsion force within the copolymer that plays a key role for the miscibility of SAN/PMMA and SAN/PEMA blends.

A new amphiphilic polymer i.e., polyethylene glycol (PEG) grafted crystalline neoprene, which was used as compatibilizer to improve the compatibility of elastomer and water-absorbent resin, has been investigated. The synthesis was based on the reaction between chlorine in neoprene and sodium salts of PEG. PEGs with molecular weights of 600 and 2000 were used. The grafting percent and the PEG content were calculated through elemental analysis of chlorine in the resulted copolymers. The maximum grafting percent of copolymers was ca. 24.80%. The molecular parameters such as number-average molecular weight and the average number of grafting chains on one CR backbone were also calculated and discussed. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Phase behavior of blends of poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) with four styrene-butadienestyrene (SBS) triblock copolymers, being of various molecular weights, architecture, and compositions, was investigated by small-angle light scattering. Small-angle X-ray scattering investigation was accomplished for one blend. Low critical solution temperature (LCST) and a unique phase behavior, resembling upper critical solution temperature (UCST), were observed. It was found that the architecture of the copolymer greatly influenced the phase behavior of the blends. Random phase approximation theory was used to calculate the spinodal phase transition curves of the ABA/C and BAB/C systems; LCST and resembling UCST phase behavior were observed as the parameters of the system changed. Qualitatively, the experimental and the theoretical results are consistent with each other. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The conductivity mechanism for a carbon black (CB) filled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) compound was investigated in this work. From the experimental results obtained, it can be seen that the relation between electrical current density (J) and applied voltage across the sample (V) coincides with Simmons's equation (i.e., the electrical resistivity of the compound decreases with the applied voltage, especially at the critical voltage). The minimum electrical resistivity occurs near the glass transition temperature (T-g) of HDPE (198 K). It can be concluded that electron tunneling is an important mechanism and a dominant transport process in the HDPE/CB composite. A new model of carbon black dispersion in the matrix was established, and the resistivity was calculated by using percolation and quantum mechanical theories. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The parameters which effect the cavitation strain of polymer blends toughened with a shear yield mechanism have been studied by analysis of the stress acted on the equatorial plane of dispersed-phase particles. As a result, the cavitation strain of polymer blends depends on the Young's modulus and the Poisson's ratio of the dispersed-phase particles and the matrix and also on the break stress of dispersed-phase particles. We tried to provide a criterion for selecting the materials used as dispersed-phase particles which can effectively enhance the toughness of polymer blends. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The effect of particle size on impact strength of polymer blends with ductile fracture was studied. The results are in agreement with the experiments. (C) 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

It is found that there is a linear relationship between log P-w, and the parameter term V-f/0.5 E(coh) [1+(delta(w) - delta(p))(2)/delta(p)(2), from the water permeability (P-w) data of 21 polymers covering 4 orders of magnitude. This correlation may be useful in choosing membrane materials for dehumidification of gases.

In this paper, the graft copolymers of styrene to nascent linear polyethylene reactor powders were prepared through plasma graft polymerization. The grafting reaction was initiated by the alkyl radicals formed on the surface of nascent polyethylene with plasma treatment as indicated by electron spin resonance spectra. In graft copolymerization by alkyl radicals, the grafting yield increased with either the plasma power or the plasma treatment lime. Compared with ordinary polyethylene powders, nascent polyethylene reactor powders were found to be more easily plasma-grafted. This has been attributed to the greater sensitivity to irradiation in producing reactive centres under the same conditions. High density polyethylene showed almost the same grafting yield as linear low density polyethylene at 50 degrees C. The surface morphology of nascent polyethylene observed by scanning electron microscope before and after the grafting showed that the silk-like fibrils were not destroyed by plasma treatment.

The static and impact fracture toughness of phenolphthalein polyether ketone (PEK-C) were studied at different temperatures. The static fracture toughness of PEK-C was evaluated via the linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) and the J-integral analysis. Impact fracture toughness was also analyzed using the LEFM approach. Temperature and strain rate effects on the fracture toughness were also studied. The enhancement in static fracture toughness at 70 degrees C was thought to be caused by plastic crack tip blunting. The increase in impact fracture toughness with temperature was attributed two different mechanisms, namely, the relaxation process in a relatively low temperature and thermal blunting of the crack tip at higher temperature. The temperature-dependent fracture toughness data obtained in static tests could be horizontally shifted to match roughly the data for impact tests, indicating the existence of a time-temperature equivalence relationship. Phase behavior, thermal, theological and mechanical properties plus morphology have been studied for a binary polymer blend. The blend is phenolphthalein polyethersulfone (PES-C) with a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP), a condensation copolymer of p-hydroxybenzoic acid with ethylene terephthalate (PHB-PET). It was found that these two polymers form optically isotropic and homogeneous blends by means of a solvent casting method. The homogeneous blends undergo phase separation during heat treatment. However, melt mixed PES-C/PHB-PET blends were heterogeneous based upon DSC and DMA analysis and SEM examination. Addition of LCP in PES-C resulted in a marked reduction of melt viscosity and thus improved processability. Compared to pure PES-C, the charpy impact strength of the blend containing 2.5% LCP increased 2.5 times. Synergistic effects were also observed for the mechanical properties of blends containing < 10% LCP. Particulates, ribbons, and fibrils were found to be the typical morphological units of PHB-PET in the PES-C matrix, which depended upon the concentration of LCP and the processing conditions.

New comblike polymers(CP) have been synthesized by reacting monomethyl ether of polyethylene glycol(PEGME) with poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic anhydride)(MA) and endcapping the residual carboxylic acid with methanol. Butanone was selected as a solvent for the esterification reaction in order to obtain a completely soluble product. They were characterized by IR, C-13 NMR and elemental analysis.
