The absorption spectra and upconversion fluorescence spectra of Er3+/-Yb3+-codoped natrium-gallium-germanium-bismuth glasses are measured and investigated. The intense green (533 and 549 nm) and red (672 nm) emission bands were simultaneously observed at room temperature. The quadratic dependence of the green and red emission on excitation power indicates that the two-photon absorption processes occur. The influence of Ga2C3 on upconversion intensity is investigated. The intensity of green emissions increases slowly with increasing Ga2O3 content, while the intensity of red emission increases significantly. The possible upconversion mechanisms for these glasses have also been discussed. The maximum phonon energy of the glasses determined based on the infrared (IR) spectral analysis is as low as 740 cm(-1). The studies indicate that Bi2O3-GeO2-Ga2O3-Na2O glasses may be potential materials for developing upconversion optical devices (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Bismuth (Bi)-doped and Bi/Dy co-doped chalcohalide glasses are investigated as promising materials for amplifiers in optical communication. The samples synthesized at lower melting temperatures (MTs) are characterized by more intensified infrared emissions. With respect to the redox process of a liquid mixture at different MTs, we attribute an emission at 1230 nm to low-valent Bi ions. The lower MT favors the formation of LVB ions, i.e. Bi+ or Bi2+, while the higher MT promotes the production of higher-valent Bi ions Bi3+. An enhanced broadband infrared luminescence with the full-width at half-maximum over 200 nm is achieved from the present Bi/Dy co-doped chalcohalide glasses.

Er3+/Yb3+ cocloped fluorophosphate glasses were prepared and their thermal stabilities, Raman spectra, absorption spectra, and fluorescence spectra were measured. It is found that proper content of NaF or PbF2 is helpful for the increase of stability against crystallization. The variation of AI(PO3)3 or NaF content in the composition affects not the maximum phonon energy but the phonon density. The introduction of PbF2 decreases the phonon energy slightly. Intense green and red upconversion luminescence was observed for the fluorophosphate glass with low phosphate content. A glass matrix for upconversion luminescence requiring neither expensive raw material nor special atmospheric conditioned preparation is provided. Infrared luminescence around 1530 nm was researched. Fluorophosphate glasses with bandwidth properties and stimulated-emission cross sections better than tellurite, germanate and silicate glasses are obtained. Through the introduction of NaF, the bandwidth properties are decreased. Through the introduction of PbF2 the gain properties are increased. On the whole, it is difficult to obtain a material with the best gain properties and bandwidth properties simultaneously. There should be a compromise between them according to the demand. We report on ultrabroad infrared (IR) luminescences covering the 1000-1700-nm wavelength region, from Bi-doped 75GeO(2) 20RO-5Al(2)O(3) 1B(2)O(3) (R = Sr, Ca, and Mg) glasses. The full width at half-maximum of the IR luminescences excited at 980 nm increases (315 -> 440 -> 510 nm) with the change of alkaline earth metal (Mg2+ -> Ca2+ -> Sr2+). The fluorescence lifetime of the glass samples is 1725, 157, and 264 mu s when R is Sr, Ca, and Mg, respectively. These materials may be promising candidates for broad-band fiber amplifiers and tunable laser resources.

Transparent glass-ceramics containing beta-Ga2O3:Ni2+ nanocrystals were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy. Intense broad-band luminescence centering at 1200 nm was observed when the sample was excited by a diode laser at 980 nm. The room-temperature fluorescent lifetime was 665 mu s, which is longer than the Ni2+-doped ZnAl2O4 and LiGa5O8 glass-ceramics and is also comparable to the Ni2+-doped LiGa5O8 single crystal. The intense infrared luminescence with long fluorescent lifetime may be ascribed to the high crystal field hold by Ni2+ and the moderate lattice phonon energy of beta-Ga2O3. The excellent optical properties of this novel material indicate that it might be a promising candidate for broad-band amplifiers and room-temperature tunable lasers.

Broadband infrared luminescence centred at around 1300 nm with full-width at half maximum of about 342 nm was observed from transparent Ni2+-doped lithium-alumino-silicate glass-ceramics embedded with beta-eucryptite crystallines. The room temperature fluorescent lifetime was 98 mu s. The transparent glass-ceramics may have potential applications in a widely tunable laser and a super-broadband optical amplifier for optical communications.

We report on the energy transfer and frequency upconversion spectroscopic properties of Er3+-doped and Er3+/Yb3+-codoped TeO2-ZnO-Na2O-PbCl2 halide modified tellurite glasses upon excitation with 808 and 978 nm laser diode. Three intense emissions centered at around 529, 546 and 657 nm, alongwith a very weak blue emission at 4 10 nm have clearly been observed for the Er3+/Yb3+-codoped halide modified tellurite glasses upon excitation at 978 nm and the involved mechanisms are explained. The quadratic dependence of fluorescence on excitation laser power confirms the fact that the two-photon contribute to the infrared to green-red upconversion emissions. And the blue upconversion at 410 nm involved a sequential three-photon absorption process. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effects of F- ions in Yb3+-doped tellurite glass systems on the emission cross-section and measured fluorescence lifetime are investigated. The results show that both the emission cross-section and the fluorescence lifetime of Yb3+ ions increase from 1.32 to 1.39 pm(2) and from 0.93 to 1.12 ms respectively with the increase of F- ions from 0 to 10 mol% and that such oxyfluoride tellurite glass system is a promising laser host matrix for high power generation. FT-IR spectra were used to analyze the effect of F- ions on the structure of tellurite glasses and the change of OH- groups in this glass system. Analysis demonstrates that the addition of fluoride decreases the symmetry of the structure of tellurite glasses resulting in increasing of the emission cross-section and removes the OH- groups resulting in increasing of the measured fluorescence lifetime of Yb3+ ions. Er3+-doped lithium-barium-lead-bismuth glass for developing upconversion lasers has been fabricated and characterized. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters Omega(t) (t = 2, 4, 6), calculated based on the experimental absorption spectrum and Judd-Ofelt theory, were found to be Omega(2) = 3.05 x 10(-20) cm(2), Omega(4) = 0.95 x 10(-20) cm(2), and Omega(6) = 0.39 x 10(-20) cm(2). Under 975 nm excitation, intense green and red emissions centered at 525, 546, and 657 nm, corresponding to the transitions H-2(11/2) -> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2), and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2), respectively, were observed at room temperature. The upconversion mechanisms are discussed based on the energy matching and quadratic dependence on excitation power, and the dominant mechanisms are excited state absorption and energy transfer upconversion for the green and red emissions. The long-lived I-4(11/2) level is supposed to serve as the intermediate state responsible for the intense upconversion processes. The intense upconversion luminescence of Er3+-doped lithium-barium-lead-bismuth glass may be a potentially useful material for developing upconversion optical devices. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. We study the structural and infrared-to-visible upconversion fluorescence properties of Er3(+)/Yb3+-codoped lead-free germanium-bismuth glass. The structure of lead-free germanium-bismuth-lanthanum glass is investigated by peak-deconvolution of Raman spectroscopy. Intense green and red emissions centred at 525, 546, and 657nm, corresponding to the transitions H-2(11/2) -> (IT15/2)-I-4 -> S-4(3/2) -> 4I(15/2), and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2), respectively, are observed at room temperature. The quadratic dependence of the 525, 546, and 657nm emissions on excitation power indicates that a two-photon absorption process occurs under 975nm excitation.

A series of five different concentration erbium-doped tellurite glasses with various hydroxl groups were prepared. Infrared spectra of glasses were measured. In order to estimate the exact content of OH- groups in samples, various absorption coefficients of the OH- vibration band were analyzed under the different oxygen bubbling times. The absorption spectra of the glasses were measured, and the Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters Omega(i) of samples with the different erbium ions concentration and OH- contents were calculated on the basis of the Judd-Ofelt theory. The peak stimulated emission cross-section of (I13/2 ->I15/2)-I-4-I-4 transition of the samples was finally calculated by using the McCumber theory. The fluorescence spectra of Er3+:I-4(13/2)->I-4(15/2) transition and the lifetime of Er3+:I-4(13/2) level of the samples were measured. The effects of OH- groups on the spectroscopic properties of Er3+ doped samples with the different concentrations were discussed. The results showed that the OH- groups had great influences on the Er3+ lifetime and the fluorescence peak intensity. The OH- group is a main influence factor of fluorescence quenching when the doping concentration of Er2O3 is smaller than 1.0 mol%, but higher after this concentration, the energy transfer of Er3+ ions turns into the main function of the fluorescence quenching. And basically, there is no influence on the other spectroscopic properties (FWHM, absorption spectra, peak stimulated emission cross section, etc.).

Structural and infrared-to-visible upconversion fluorescence properties in ytterbium-sensitized erbrium-doped novel lead-free germanium bismuth-lanthanum glass have been studied. The structure of lead-free germanium-bismuth-lanthanum glass was investigated by peak-deconvolution of Raman spectrum, and the structural information was obtained from the peak wavenumbers. Intense green and red emissions centered at 525, 546, and 657 nm, corresponding to the transitions 2H(11/2) -> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2), and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2), respectively, were observed at room temperature. The quadratic dependence of the 525, 546, and 657 nm emissions on excitation power indicates that a two-photon absorption process occurs under 975 nm excitation. This novel lead-free germanium-bismuth-lanthanum glass with low maximum phonon energy (similar to 751 cm(-1)) can be used as potential host material for upconversion lasers. Novel Er3+-doped bismuth lead strontiam glass was fabricated and characterized, and the absorption spectrum and upconversion spectrum of the glass were studied. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters Omega(t)(t = 2, 4, 6) were found to be Omega(2) = 3.27 x 10(-20) cm(2), Omega(4) = 1.15 x 10(-20) cm(2), and Omega(6) = 0.38 x 10(-20) cm(2). The oscillator strength, the spontaneous transition probabilities, the fluorescence branching ratios, and excited state lifetimes were also measured and calculated. The upconversion emission intensity varies with the power of infrared excitation intensity. A plot of log I-up vs log I-IR yields a straight line with slope 1.86, 1.88 and 1.85, corresponding to 525, 546, and 657 nm emission bands, respectively, which indicates that a two-photon process for the red and green emission.

Near-infrared luminescence is observed from bismuth-doped GeS2-Ga2S3 chalcogenide glasses excited by an 808 nm laser diode. The emission peak with a maximum at about 1260 nm is observed in 80GeS(2)-20Ga(2)S(3):0.5Bi glass and it shifts toward the long wavelength with the addition of Bi gradually. The full width of half maximum (FWHM) is about 200 nm. The broadband infrared luminescence of Bi-doped GeS2-Ga2S3 chalcogenide glasses may be predominantly originated from the low valence state of Bi, such as Bi+. Raman scattering is also conducted to clarify the structure of glasses. These Bi-doped GeS2-Ga2S3 chalcogenide glasses can be applied potentially in novel broadband optical fibre amplifiers and broadly tunable laser in optical communication system.
