A novel type of electrochemical detector based on a polyaniline-dispersed mercury-coated glassy carbon chemically modified electrode was investigated for the detection of monochloramine and dichloramine. A polyaniline dispersed-mercury modified electrode, which was prepared by coating polyaniline on a thin mercury film electrode using fast-sweep voltammetry, was developed. The selectivity could be altered using various counter ions incorporated into the polymer. The results indicated that the use of a conducting polymer-based electrochemical sensor for the selective determination of chloramine is a feasible approach.

A layer of palladium particles was electrodeposited on a glassy carbon electrode. The dispersed Pd particles resulted in a large decrease in overvoltage for the electrochemical oxidation of H2O2 down to +0.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl, based on which a new kind of cholesterol sensor was fabricated. Cholesterol oxidase was immobilized on the Pd-dispersed electrode by cross-linking with glutaraldehyde and a layer of poly(o-phenylenediamine) (PPD) film was electropolymerized on the enzyme layer. The sensor shows a linear response in the concentration range 0.05-4.50 mmol l-1 with a rapid response of less than 20 s. The polymer film can prevent interference from uric acid and ascorbic acid and also increases the thermal stability of the sensor. The sensor can be used for 200 assays without an obvious decrease in activity.

A glassy carbon electrode coated with an electrodeposited film of mixed-valent cobalt oxide/cyanocobaltate (Co-O/CN-Co) enabled hydrazine compounds to be catalytically oxidized at the greatly reduced overpotential and in a wide operational pH range (pH 2.0-7.0). Electrocatalytic activity at the Co-O/CN-Co modified electrode was evaluated with respect to solution pH, film thickness, supporting electrolyte ions, potential scan rate, operating potential, concentration dependence and other variables. The Co-O/CN-Co film electrode was completely compatible with a conventional reversed-phase liquid chromatographic (RP-LC) system. Practical RP-LC amperometric detection (RP-LCEC) of hydrazines was performed. A dynamic linear response range over three orders of magnitude and a detection limit at the pmol level were readily obtained. The Co-O/CN-CO film electrode exhibited excellent electrocatalytic stability in the flowing streams.

A new method for electrochemically in situ conductivity measurements based on a reusable glassy carbon disc carbon fibre array double electrode is described. Using this technique and cyclic voltammetry, we have investigated the effects of the doping anion and solvent on the electrochemical properties of polypyrrole film. The electroactivity and potential dependent conductivity of polypyrrole film are strongly affected by solvent and the doping anion's solubility in the solvent, and also by the history of electrochemical treatments in different electrolyte solutions. It is very interesting that NO3-doped polypyrrole can completely keep its conducting state (doped state) at a reasonably negative potential (eg -0.8 V vs. sce) in acetonitrile solutions.

The electrochemical behaviour of hexacyanoferrate(II) has been studied by using a bis(4-pyridyl)disulfide modified gold electrode. On the protonated electrode surface, hexacyanoferrate(II) can transfer an electron reversibly but no apparent adsorption was detected. On the deprotonated electrode surface, electron transfer by hexacyanoferrate(II) was more difficult. The electrochemical reversibility varied with the pH of the solution. Relationships between the currents or the standard heterogeneous rate constants and pH were derived.

Electrochemical polymerization of 4-vinylpyridine produced a uniform poly(4-vinyl)pyridine(PVP) film on the glassy carbon (GC) electrode surface. The isopolymolybdic acid-PVP film-modified electrode was prepared by soaking the PVP/GC electrode in the 0.05 M H2SO4 aqueous solution containing 0.005 M isopolymolybdic acid (H4Mo8O26). The latter (catalyst) is incorporated and held in the PVP film electrostatically. The electrochemical behavior and electrocatalytic properties of this H4Mo8O26-PVP/GC electrode was described. The results indicate that this modified electrode has good stability and electrocatalytic activity on the reduction of chlorate and bromate ions in aqueous solution. The catalytic process is regarded as an EC mechanism.

The Electrochemical stability of poly(3-methylthiophene) (PMT) thin film modified glassy carbon electrodes was investigated experimentally with successive cyclic voltammetry(CV) The effects of electrolyte solutions on the stability were studied. In the presence of small hydrated anions (less-than-or-equal-to 3.5nm) in the solution, the electroactivity of PMT films decreased with the characteristics of second order kinetics. In a solution with large hydrated anions (greater-than-or-equal-to 4 nm), PMT films have good stability. PMT/GO electrode can electrocatalyse the oxidation of Br- and Cl- anions, and loses its electroactivity rapidly. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) have demonstrated that chlorine has bonded covalently onto the PMT structure after OV cycles in NaCl solutions.

A glucose oxidase (GOD) electrode with ferrocene (Fc) used as an electron transfer mediator has been described. Using Nafion, Fc was modified on a glassy carbon (GC) electrode surface, and glucose oxidase was then immobilized on the Fc-Nafion film, forming a GOD-Fc-Nafion enzyme electrode. The preparation method was quite simple and rapid. The enzyme electrode showed a reversible reaction of the redox couple (Fc+/Fc), used in a biosensor system, displayed a sensitive catalytic current response (response time was less than 20 s) on variation of the glucose concentration, with a wide linear range up to 16 mM and with good repeatability. The enzyme electrode showed almost no deterioration over the course of three weeks. There was little or no interference from electro-active anions, such as ascorbic acid, to the determination of glucose based on Nafion film and lower oxidizing potentials of the enzyme electrode.

Thionine-containing chemically modified electrode (cme) was constructed with glassy carbon substrate by potential sweep oxidation, electrodeposition and adsorption procedures, and electrocatalytic reduction of hemoglobin was carried out and characterized at the cme under batch and flow conditions. Comparison of the catalytic response toward hemoglobir obtained at the cme was made mainly in terms of the potential dependence, the detectability and long-term stability. When used in flow injection analysis (FIA) experiments with the detector monitored at a constant potential applied at -0.35 V vs sce, detection limit of 0.15-1.5 pmol level of hemoglobin injected was achieved at the cme, with linear response range over 2 orders of magnitude. All the cme s retained more than 70% of their initial hemoglobin response level over 8 h of continuous service in the flow-through system.

A novel Prussian blue chemically modified electrode (CME) was constructed and characterized for liquid chromatography electrochemical detection (LCEC) of catecholamines. Both anodic and cathodic peaks could be obtained by monitoring at constant applied potential at anodic and slightly cathodic potential ranges (0.3-0.7 and -0.2-0.1 V vs. SCE), respectively. When arranged in a series configuration, using the modified electrodes as generating and collecting detectors, extremely high effective collection efficiencies of 0.91 (for norepinephrine) and 0.58 (for dihydroxyphenylacetic acid) were achieved in dual-electrode LCEC for catecholamines; and a linear response range over 3 orders of magnitude and a detection limit of 10 pg were obtained with a downstream CME as the indicating detector.

A Prussian Blue-modified glassy carbon electrode prepared by simple adsorption exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity in the oxidation of hydrazine in acidic media. A film of the perfluorosulphonic acid polymer Nafion coated on top of the Prussian Blue-modified glassy carbon electrode can improve the mechanical stability of the Prussian Blue layer in the flow stream. Hydrazine was detected by flow-injection analysis at the modified electrode with high sensitivity. The limit of detection was 0.6 ng.
