alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticulate films could be formed on the surface of alpha-Fe2O3 hydrosol after aging of the hydrosol or by compressing of the nanoparticles on the sol surface, in. which a three-dimensional ordered structure was constructed by the Langmuir-Blodgett; technique and colloid chemical methods. The structure of the LB film was characterized by AFM, TEM, XPS, and UV-vis spectra and small-angle X-ray diffraction. Gas-sensing measurement shows that the LB film has good sensitivity to alcohols at room temperature,

The irreversible conformational transition of bovine serum albumin (BSA) from alpha-helix to beta-sheet, induced by electric field near the electrode surface, was monitored by circular dichroism (CD) with a long optical path thin layer cell (LOPTLC).

Isotactic polypropylene in its a modification (alpha iPP) crystallises epitaxially on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and several hemiacids or salts of substituted benzoic acids via a novel contact plane, namely (110): so far, the only known contact plane involved in alpha iPP homo- and hetero-epitaxies was (010). In spite of its complicated architecture (alternation of antichiral helices with different azimuthal settings), the (110)(alpha iPP) contact plane displays well defined, if not prominent, rows of methyl side chains parallel to the crystallographic (112) direction (at 57 degrees to the c-axis) and approximate to 5.5 Angstrom apart. The matching contact planes of the substrates display linear gratings made of rows of e.g. chlorine atoms or PTFE chains with similar approximate to 5.5 Angstrom inter-row or interchain distances. Various morphologies are observed in iPP thin films crystallised at different cooling rates in the presence of PTFE; they can be analysed in terms of a succession and interplay of successive epitaxies: initial alpha iPP/PTFE heteroepitaxy, followed by alpha iPP/alpha iPP and gamma iPP/alpha iPP homoepitaxies. The title compound, (H(2)en)(3)H3O {MO8V4O36 (VO4) (VO)(2)} . 4H(2)O, was hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by means of IR, ESR spectrum and single crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallized in a monoclinic system with space group P2(1)/c, a=1. 980 4(4) nm, b=2. 063 4(4) nm, c=1. 192 0(2) nm, (beta =94. 76(3)degrees and deep black colour. The compound contains V-centered bi-capped alpha -Keggin fragments {Mo8V7O42} that are linked together by edge-shared units (VO5)-O-N via V-O-V bonds, forming a chain.

Chemical bond parameters in RBa2Cu4O8(R = Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb) and Y2Ba4Cu7O14.3 were calculated by using complex chemical bond theory. The results indicated that the bond covalency in CuO chain was larger than that in CuO2 plane. For metal atoms, the bond covalency of five coordinated case was larger than that of six coordinated case.

A novel inorganic-organic hybrid material incorporating graphite powder and Keggin-type alpha -germanomolybdic acid (GeMo12) in methyltrimethoxysilane-based gels has been produced by the sol-gel technique and used to fabricate a chemically bulk-modified electrode. GeMo12 acts as a catalyst, graphite powder ensures conductivity by percolation, the silicate provides a rigid porous backbone, and the methyl groups endow hydrophobicity and thus limit the wetting section of the modified electrode. The GeMo12-modified graphite organosilicate composite electrode was characterized by cyclic and square-wave voltammetry. The modified electrode shows a high electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of bromate, nitrite and hydrogen peroxide in acidic aqueous solution. In addition, the chemically-modified electrode has some distinct advantages over the traditional polyoxometalate-modified electrodes, such as long-term stability and especially repeatability of surface-renewal by simple mechanical polishing.

Bond covalencies in R2BaCuO5 (R = Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Y, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) were calculated by means of a semiempirical method. This method is the generalization of the dielectric description theory of Phillips-Van Vechten-Levine-Tanaka scheme. The present paper presents the formula concerning the decomposing of complex crystals which are usually anisotropic systems into the sum of binary crystals which are isotropic systems. It can be seen that although the bond covalency is related to many physical quantities, it is mainly influenced by bond valence or bond charge, and a higher bond valence will produce higher bond covalency.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and mass spectrometry have been used to study the ten alpha-Amino Acids. The chemical shiftss of N-1s electron binding energy have been explained by means of the difference in the hydrocarbon group of amino acids. The influence of the hydrocarbon group on NH2 has been disscussed using the XPS and MS results.

From the chemical bond viewpoint, second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) tensor coefficients of the family of new oxoborates Ca4ReO(BO3)(3) (CReOB, Re = La, Nd, Sm, Gd, Er, and Y) have been theoretically predicted. The d(11) tensor coefficient of CReOB is predicted to be -11 d(36)(KDP), which is the largest d(ij) tensor that has been found in borate crystals. From the structural characteristic of CReOB, we find the isolated BO33- clusters play a dominant role in contributions to the total nonlinearity, and the largest d(11) tensor of CReOB-type crystals is also ascribed to these BO33- clusters. We also find the NLO property of this family does not change dramatically for different rare-earth elements. The details of the calculation of CGdOB only are presented.

A new complex K5H[Co-4(VW9O33)(2)]. 5H(2)O was prepared and its structure was determined by X - ray diffraction analysis. The anion has alpha - beta - Keggin structure. Two (VW9O33)(7-) moieties (alpha - B isomers) are linked via four Co(11)O-6 groups. The single crystal of the title complex is monoclinic P2(1/n) with a = 1.2307(3) nm, b = 2.1250(4) nm, c = 1.5817(3) nm, beta = 91.86(3)degrees, V = 4.1343 (14) nm(3), R = 0.0895, R-w = 0.2180.

Carbonyl-iridium half-sandwich compounds, Cp*Ir(CO)(EPh)(2) (E = S, Se), were prepared by the photo-induced reaction of Cp*Ir(CO)(2) with the diphenyl dichalcogenides, E2Ph2, and used as neutral chelating ligands in carbonylmetal complexes such as Cp*Ir(CO)(mu-EPh)(2)[Cr(CO)(4)], Cp*Ir(CO)(mu-EPh)(2)[Mo(CO)(4)] and Cp*Ir(CO)(mu-EPh)(2)[Fe(CO)(3)], respectively. A trimethylphosphane - iridium analogue, Cp*Ir(PMe3)(mu-SeMe)(2)[Cr(CO)(4)], was also obtained. The new heterodimetallic complexes were characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy, and the molecular geometry of Cp*Ir(CO)(mu-SePh)(2)[Mo(CO)(4)] has been determined by a single crystal X-ray structure analysis. According to the long Ir...Mo distance (395.3(1) Angstrom), direct metal-metal interactions appear to be absent. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

A new Er(III)-Na(I) coordination polymer of stoichiometry [NaEr2L5(H2O)(6)(NO3)](NO3). 3.5H(2)O (HL = picolinic acid N-oxide) has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Crystals are triclinic, P (1) over bar with a = 9.823(2), b = 12.453(2), c = 20.643(4) Angstrom; alpha = 98.49(3), beta = 101.40(3), gamma = 108.69(3)degrees; V = 2284(1) Angstrom(3); Z = 2. Of the two independent eight-coordinate erbium(III) ions in this complex, one is surrounded by four bidentate chelating L ligands, and the other by one bidentate chelating L ligand, four aqua ligands and two anti-carboxylate oxygen atoms from two neighboring [ErL4] units. The sodium(I) ion is in a distorted octahedral environment, being coordinated by a unidentate nitrate anion, three aqua ligands and two anti-carboxylate oxygen atoms from two adjacent [ErL4] units. The complex is built from zigzag chains of syn-anti carboxylate-bridged erbium(III) moieties directed in the a direction, which are cross-linked pairwise by aqua-bridged dimeric sodium(I) units. The resulting composite polymeric chains are further connected by hydrogen bonds to form a three-dimensional network.
