Two closely series of poly(ester imide)s had been synthesized by solution polycondensation of p-phenylenebis(trimellitate) dianhydride with aliphatic diamines. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) traces of the most poly(ester imide)s exhibited two endotherms representing the solid state to anisotropic phase transition (T-m1) and the anisotropic to isotropic melt transition (T-m2), respectively. Observation under polarizing microscope and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements suggested that the anisotropic phase formed above the melting paints (T-m1) had a smectic character. The thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) revealed that the thermal stabilities of the poly(ester imide)s were up to 350 degrees C. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Compatibilization of blends of Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and LLDPE-copolymer of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 4-vinylpyridine (poly(MMA-co-4VP) with poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) (EMAA) have been studied. Mechanical properties of the LLDPE-PMMA blends increase upon addition of EMAA. In order to further improve interfacial adhesion of LLDPE and PMMA, 4-vinyl pyridine units are introduced into PMMA chains, or poly(MMA-co-4VP) is used as the polar polymer. In LLDPE-poly(MMA-co-4VP)-EMAA blends, interaction of MAA in EMAA with 4VP of poly(MMA-co-4VP) causes a band shift in the infrared (IR) spectra. Chemical shifts of N-1s binding energy in X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS) experiments indicate a transfer of proton from MAA to 4VP. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures show that the morphology of the blends were improved upon addition of EMAA. Nonradiative energy transfer (NRET) fluorescence results attest that there exists interdiffusion of chromophore-labeled LLDPE chains and chromophore-labeled poly(MMA-co-4VP) chains in the interface. Based on experimental results, the mechanism of compatibilization is studied in detail. Compatibilization is realized through the interaction between MAA in EMAA with 4VP in poly(MMA-co-4VP). A series of novel thermotropic side-chain liquid crystalline polymer based on polymethacrylate backbone containing electron-accepting 4-(4'-nitrophenylazo)phenoxy as nonlinear optical active group and electron-donating 4(4'-methoxyphenyl) phenoxy group as mesogen attached covalently to the backbone through the flexible spacer was prepared and characterized, respectively. The results from differential scanning calorimetry showed that these series of copolymers were enantiotropic liquid crystal with single mesophase. The melting points and the relative enthalpy change of the copolymers depressed with increasing the molar percent of 4'-nitroazobenzene monomer units over 0 similar to 50mol%, but the enthalpies change of the transition from mesophase to isotropic state increased for the copolymers containing 0 similar to 50mol% 4'-nitroambenzene units. The texture observed under polarized optical microscope identified that the copolymers containing 24molar% or more than 24mol% 4-nitroambenzene monomer units could form smectic mesophase with the focal-conic texture. The results detected by WAXD were in good agreement with the results observed by POM.

Blends of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and a diblock copolymer of hydrogenated polybutadiene and methyl methacrylate [P(HB-b-MMA)] were studied by transimission electron microscope (TEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). At 10 wt% block copolymer content, block copolymer chains exist as spherical micelles and cylindrical micelles in LLDPE matrix. At 50 wt% block copolymer content, block copolymer chains mainly form cylindrical micelles. The core and corona of micelles consist of PMMA and PHB blocks, respectively. DSC results show that the total enthalpy of crystallization of the blends varies linearly with LLDPE weight percent, indicating no interactions in the crystalline phase. In the blends, no distortion of the unit cell is observed in WAXD tests.

The crystallization, morphology, and crystalline structure of dilute solid solutions of tetrahydrofuran-methyl methacrylate diblock copolymer (PTHF-b-PMMA) in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and PTHF have been studied with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray, and optical microscopy. This study provides a new insight into the crystallization behavior of block copolymers. For the dilute PTHF-b-PMMA/PEO system containing only 2 to 7 wt % of PTHF content, crystallization of the PTHF micellar core was detected both on cooling and on heating. Compared the crystallization of the PTHF in the dilute solutions with that in the pure copolymer, it was found that the crystallizability of the PTHF micellar core in the solution is much greater than that of the dispersed PTHF microdomain in the pure copolymer. The stronger crystallizability in the solution was presumably due to a softened PMMA corona formed in the solution of the copolymer with PEG. However, the "soft" micelles formed in the solution (meaning that the glass transition temperatures (T-g) of the micelle is lower than the T-m of the matrix phase) showed almost no effects on the spherulitic morphology of the PEO component, compared with that of the pure PEO sample. In contrast, significant effects of the micelles with a "hard" PMMA core (meaning that the T-g of the core is higher than the T-m of the PTHF homopolymer) on the nucleation, crystalline structure, and spherulitic morphology were observed for the dilute PTHF-b-PMMA/PTHF system. A novel engineering thermoplastic, phenolphthalein poly (ether-ether-sulfone) (PES-C) was blended with a commercial thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(TLCP), Vectra A950, up to 30 weight percent of TLCP. A rheometrics dynamic spectrometer (RDS-I) and a CEAST capillary rheometer, a rheoscope 1000 were employed to investigate the melt rheology and extrusion behaviour at both the low and high shearing rates. The morphologies of the blends under different shearing were observed with a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and correlated to the observed rheology. The principal normal stress differences measured with cone-and-plate geometry give a temperature-independent correlation for both blend and PES-C when they are plotted against shear stress. But the extrudate swell of the blends showed a strong temperature dependence at each shear stress. The concentration dependence of extrudate swell shows a contrary behaviour to that of the inorganic filled system. A reasonable hypothesis based on the relaxation and disorientation of TLCP during flowing in the capillary and exiting was given to explain it. The melt fracture was checked after extrusion from capillary and was discussed.

Two series of monomers, namely n-1-bromo-(4-(4-nitrophenylazo)phenyloxy]alkanes (Bn, n = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10) and N-n-[4-(4-nitrophenylazo)phenyloxy]alkyl diethanolamines (Cn, n = 3, 5, 6, 10), were synthesized and characterized. Their thermal behaviour was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide angle X-ray diffractometry (WAXD) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM) equipped with a hot stage. The results showed that the Bns (n greater than or equal to 6) exhibit monotropic nematic liquid crystalline behaviour; no liquid crystalline phase was found for the Bns (n < 6), while for the Cns, enantiotropic smectic liquid crystallinity for n = 5, 6, 10 was seen, and for n = 3 monotropic smectic phases were found. This different phase behaviour between Bn and Cn compounds is attributed to their different end groups. The FTIR analysis of Cn indicated that there exists an intermolecular hydrogen bond between hydroxy groups, so that more stable liquid crystalline phase are formed. The effect of the length of the flexible chain on the thermal behaviour is also discussed.

Structural studies of poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) using small-angle X-ray scattering and one-dimensional electron density correlation function methods revealed that its aggregated state structure was significantly influenced by the annealing temperature. The long period L, the average thickness of the lamellae d, the electron density difference between the crystalline and amorphous regions eta(c) - eta(a), and the invariant Q increased with increasing annealing temperature, but it was opposite to the case of the specific inner surfaces O-s. A transition zone existed between the traditional "two phases" with a dimension about 0.5 nm for semicrystalline PEEKK. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 69: 1829-1835, 1998.

A novel complex - palladium-coordinated ate-type liquid crystalline dendrimer was synthesized by a divergent approach, The product showed liquid crystalline properties from 115 degrees C to 187 degrees C, and it belonged to dinuclear species, containing two palladium centers linked by two bridging Cl, each palladium atom completes its coordinations with N atom and a sigma bond to an ortho-carbon in the phenyl ring. The microanalytical values obtained for the product are in agreement with those of compound containing ligand, palladium:and chlorine in a molar ratio of 1 : 1 : 1 and 12 palladium atoms for every scaffold.

A liquid crystalline carbosilane dendrimer with Sc* phase has been synthesized in successive steps, resulting in the formation of defined, unimolecular compound. Twelve biphenyl mesogenic units were attached on its periphery and it has a three dimentional, treelike starburst structure. Its phase behavior was K95S(c)*103Ch118I. Compared.with its biphenyl mesogenic unit , 4-(2'-methylbutyl)-4'-(omega-hydroxyhexyl) azobenzene , which was melted at 128 degrees C and is not a liquid crystal, it is a good liquid crystal material with Sc* phase.

Novel main chain poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing a lateral phenyl group were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol and phenylhydroquinone with either 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone or 1,4-bis(4-fluorobenzoyl)benzene and their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were characterized by a variety of experimental techniques. Thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour was observed in the copolymers containing 50 and 70mol% biphenol. Melting (T-m) and isotropization (T-i) transitions both appeared on the DSC thermograms. A banded texture was formed after shearing the sample in the liquid crystalline nematic state. As expected, each of the copolymers had a relatively lower melting transition than the biphenol-based homopoly(aryl ether ketone)s because of the copolymerization effect of the crystal-disrupting monomer phenylhydroquinone.

The crystallization behavior of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) on highly oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) at elevated temperatures (e.g., from 125 to 128 degrees C), was studied using transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The results show that epitaxial crystallization of HDPE on the highly oriented iPP substrates occurs only in a thin layer which is in direct contact with the iPP substrate, when the HDPE is crystallized from the melt on the oriented iPP substrates at 125 degrees C. The critical layer thickness of the epitaxially crystallized HDPE is not more than 30 nm when the HDPE is isothermally crystallized on the oriented iPP substrates at 125 degrees C. When the crystallization temperature is above 125 degrees C, the HDPE crystallizes in the form of crystalline aggregates and a few individual crystalline lamellae. But both the crystalline aggregates and the individual crystalline lamellae have no epitaxial orientation relationship with the iPP substrate. This means that there exists a critical crystallization temperature for the occurrence of epitaxial crystallization of HDPE on the melt-drawn oriented iPP substrates (i.e., 125 degrees C). Blends of a liquid crystalline thermotropic copolyester (LCP70) and an amorphous phenolphthalein based poly(ether-ketone)(PEK-C) with two viscosities were prepared by melt blending. The blends' morphology, rheological and mechanical properties were investigated by DSC, SEM, mechanical and rheological tests. It was observed that the optimum composition of the PEK-C/LCP70 blend was 10 wt% LCP for both mechanical and rheological properties. When the LCP content was less than 10%, the LCP phase existed as finely dispersed fibrous domains with a diameter of about 1 mu m in the matrix, and both tensile and flexural properties were improved. In contrast, when the LCP content reached 20% or more, the LCP domains coalesced to ellipsoidal particles with a diameter of about 5 mu m, and the mechanical properties decreased as a result. It is demonstrated that pure PEK-C with a high viscosity which was difficult to process by melt extrusion, could be extruded conveniently when 10% LCP70 was incorporated. It is emphasized that LCP not only can be used as a reinforcing phase but also an effective processing agent for engineering thermoplastics, especially for those with high viscosity and narrow processing window. Comb-like polymers (CPs) based on modified alternating methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer with oligo(oxyethylene) side chains of the type -O(CH2CH2O)(n)CH3 were synthesized and characterized, and complexed with lithium salts to form amorphous polymer electrolytes. Maximum conductivity close to 1.38 x 10(-4) S/cm was achieved at room temperature and at a [Li]/[EO] ratio (EO = ethylene oxide) of about 0.066. The temperature dependence of ionic conductivity suggested that the ion transport was controlled by segmental motion of the polymer, shown by linear curves obtained in Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher plots. The ionic conductivity maximum moved to a higher salt concentration as the temperature increased, indicating that a larger number of charge carriers can be transferred through polymer chains, of which free volume is increased at higher temperature. IR results indicated that the ester in CPs might decompose at 140 degrees C and reproduce the maleic anhydride ring.

2,2'-Bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride was used as a new monomer with various aromatic diamines to obtain polyimides by the usual two-step method. The bis(ether anhydride) was prepared by a nucleophilic substitution of I,1'-bi-2-naphthol with N-phenyl-4-chlorophthalimide, N-methyl-4-nitrophthalimide or 4-nitrophthalonitrile in aprotic polar solvent, and subsequent hydrolysis of the resulting bis(ether imide)s or bis(ether dinitrile), and then dehydration of the corresponding tetracarboxylic acid to afford the dianhydride. Most of the obtained polyimides were soluble in chloroform, pyridine, DMF, etc. The polyimide prepared from p-phenylene diamine was partial crystalline, whereas the others showed amorphous patterns in a WAXD study. These polymers have glass transition temperatures between 255-294 degrees C and 5% weight loss temperatures in the range of 502-541 degrees C in nitrogen and 473-537 degrees C in air.
