New neutral nickel(II) complexes bearing nonsymmetric bidentate pyrrole-imine chelate ligands (4a-d), [2-(ArNCH)C4H3N]Ni(PPh3)Ph [Ar=2,6-diisopropylphenyl (a), 2-methyl-6-isopropylphenyl (b), 2,6-diethylphenyl (c), 2-tert-butylphenyl (d)], have been prepared in good yields from the sodium salts of the corresponding ligands and trans-Ni(PPh3)(2)(Ph)Cl, and the structure of complex 4a has been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. These neutral Ni(II) complexes were investigated as catalysts for the vinylic polymerization of norbornene. Using modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as a cocatalyst, these complexes display very high activities and produce great mass polymers. Catalyst activity of up to 4.2 x 10(7) g (mol Ni h)(-1) and the viscosity-average molecular weight of polymer of up to 9.2 x 10(5) g mol(-1) were observed. Catalyst activity, polymer yield, and polymer molecular weight can be controlled over a wide range by the variation of reaction parameters such as Al-Ni ratio, norbornene-catalyst ratio, monomer concentration, polymerization reaction temperature and time.

In this Letter, crystal growth of a symmetric crystalline-amorphous diblock copolymer, poly(styrene-b-epsilon-caprolactone) (PS-b-PCL), in thin films was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), Relief structures of holes and islands were formed during annealing the film at the molten state, and the in situ observation of subsequent crystal growth at room temperature indicated that the crystals were preferred to occur at the edge of holes or islands and grew into the interior area. It was concluded that the stretched PCL blocks at the edge of relief structures, caused by material transportation or deformation of the interface, could act as nucleation agents during polymer crystallization. The crystal growth rate of individual lamellae varied both from lamellae to lamellae and in time, but the area occupied by crystals increased constantly with time. At 22 degreesC, the growth rate was 1.2 x 10(-2) mum(2)/min with the scan size 2 x 2 mum(2).

Several new hybrid organic-inorganic Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films containing europium-substituted hetero-polytungstate Eu (XW11O39)(2)''(-) (X=Ge, Si, B) were successfully obtained using LB technique. When the heteropolytungstate anions are dissolved in the subphase, dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide compression isotherms have been modified, which shows that the polyanions interact with the monolayer. Y-type LB films were obtained from the systems. Low-angle X-ray has shown that these LB films have well-defined lamella. The LB films were characterized by luminescence spectra and the characteristic luminescence behavior for europium-substituted heteropolytungstate complexes and their LB films were discussed. The results of excitation spectra indicate that the energy could be effectively transferred from ligands to the Eu3+ ions in the LB films and the luminescence efficiency could be greatly increased. The results of luminescence spectra indicate that the formations of hybrid organic-inorganic LB films have a great effect on the luminescence of europium-substituted heteropolytungstate. The lifetime shortening was observed in LB films.

The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of dichlorotris (1,10-phenanthroline) ruthenium (11) [Ru(phen)(3)(2+)] with peroxydisulfate (S2O82-) was first described. The use of carbon paste electrodes, organic solvent modified electrodes, allowed obtaining ECL in purely aqueous solution. The ECL produced by the reaction of electrogenerated C Ru(phen)(3)(2+) with the strongly oxidizing intermediate SO4-., was observed only when the applied potential was negative enough to reduce Ru(phen)(3)(2+). In comparison with Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)/S2O82- ECL, the Ru(phen)(3)(2+)/O-8(2-)/S2O82- ECL was more stable in aqueous solution. It was not affected by the storage of the carbon paste electrodes, and it quenched only at quite high S2O82- concentrations. The ECL intensity was a function of S2O82- concentration, increasing linearly with the S2O82- concentration from 5 X 10(-6) to 2 X 10(-3) mol l(-1), and dropping off sharply at S2O82- concentration higher than 20 mmol l(-1). The proposed ECL method with Ru(phen)(3)(2+) was sensitive and selective for the determination of S2O82-. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The vesicle of didodecyldhnethylammonimn bromide (DDAB) which contained tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) was mixed with xanthine oxidase, and the mixture was cast on the pyrolytic graphite electrode. The lipid films were used to supply a biological environment resembling biomembrane on the surface of the electrode. TTF was used as a mediator because of its high electron-transfer efficiency. A novel xanthine biosensor based on cast DDAB film was developed. The effects of pH and operating potential were explored for optimum analytical performance by using the amperometric method. The response time of the biosensor was less than 10 s. The detection limit of the biosensor was 3.2 x 10(-7) mol/L and the liner range was from 4 x 10(-7) mol/L to 2.4 x 10(-6) mol/L.

A surface-renewable tris (1,10-phenanthroline-5, 6-dione) iron (II) hexafluorophosphate (FePD) modified carbon ceramic electrode was constructed by dispersing FePD and graphite powder in methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMOS) based gels. The FePD-modified electrode presented pH dependent voltammetric behavior, and its peak currents were diffusion-controlled in 0.1 mol/L Na2SO4 + H2SO4 solution (pH = 0. 4). In the, presence of iodate, clear electrocatalytic reduction waves were observed and thus the chemically modified electrode was used as an amperometric sensor for iodate in common salt. The linear range, sensitivity, detection limit and response time of the iodate sensor were 5 x 10(-6)-1 x 10(-2) mol/L, 7.448 muA.L/mmol, 1.2 x 10(-6) mol/L and 5 s, respectively. A distinct advantage of this sensor is its good reproducibility of surface-renewal by simple mechanical polishing.

Polyimide hybrid films containing bimetalic compounds were obtained by codoping poly(amic acid) with a barium and titanium precursor prepared from BaCO3, Ti(OBu)(4), and lactic acid followed by casting and thermal curing. FTIR, WAXD, and XPS measurements showed that barium and titanium precursor could be transformed to BaTiO3 at a temperature above 650 degreesC, while the mixed oxides were only found in hybrid films. The measurements of TEM and AFM indicated a homogeneous distribution of inorganic phase with particle sizes less than 50 nm. The hybrid films exhibited fairly high thermal stability, good optical transparency, and promising mechanical properties. The incorporation of 10 wt % barium and titanium oxide lowered surface and volume electrical resistivity by 2 and 5 orders, respectively, increasing dielectric constant from 3.5 to 4.2 and piezoelectric constant from 3.8 to 5.2 x 10(-12) c/N, relative to the nondoped polyimide film.

A novel glucose biosensor based on cast lipid film was developed. This model of biological membrane was used to supply a biological environment on the surface of the electrode, moreover it could greatly reduce the interference and effectively exclude hydrophilic electroactive material from reaching the detecting surface. TTF was selected as a mediator because of its high electron-transfer efficiency, and it was incorporated in the lipid film firmly. Glucose oxidase was immobilized in hydrogel covered on the lipid film. The effects of pH, operating potential were explored for the optimum analytical performance by using amperometric method. The response time of the biosensor was less than 20 s, and the linear range is up to 10 mmol l(-1) (corr. coeff. 0.9932) with the detection limit of 2 x 10(-5) mol l(-1). A stable film was prepared by casting dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and rutin onto the surface of a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. The electrochemistry behavior of rutin in the DPPC film was investigated. The modified electrode coated with rutin shows a quasi-reversible reduction-oxidation peak on the cyclic voltammogram in phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). This model of biological membrane was not only used to provide biological environment but also to investigate the oxidation of ascorbic acid by rutin. The DPPC-rutin modified electrode behaves as electrocatalytic oxidation to ascorbic acid. The oxidation peak current of ascorbic acid increases drastically and the peak potential of 4 x 10(-4) mol L-1 ascorbic acid shifts negatively about 100 mV compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. The catalytic current increased linearly with the ascorbic acid concentration in the range of 2 x 10(-4) mol L-1 and 1.4 x 10(-3) mol L-1 at a scan rate of 50 mV s(-1).

A simple method was proposed for the separation of allopurinol (AP) and its active metabolite oxypurinol (OP) by capillary electrophoresis with end-column amperometric detection. A running buffer composed of 15 rum Na2HPO4/NaH2PO4 at a pH 9.55, electrokinetic injection 7 s at 5 kV, separation voltage at 15 kV and detection potential at 1.20 V were investigated to be the optimal condition for the separation. The method exhibited low detection Emit (S/N = 3) as 1 x 10(-8) mol/l for AP and OP, wide linearity range of 2 x 10(-7) to 1 x 10(-4) mol/l, 1 x 10(-7) to 1 x 10(-4) and high efficiency of 1.2 x 10(5) and 1.8 x 10(5) N/m for AP and OP, respectively. The potential application examined for the method was the determination of the spiked urine sample, which was proved to be sensitive and efficient. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. The redox process of norepinephrine in pH = 7.0 phosphate buffer solution at glassy carbon electrode was studied by circular dichroism spectroelectrochemistry with a long optical path thin layer cell. The spectroelectrochemical data were analyzed with the double logarithm method. According to the double logarithsmic plot results, the mechanism of electrochemical oxidation of norepinephrine is an irreversible process with a subsequent chemical reaction (EC) to form a norepinephrinechrome. Both of norepinephrinequinone and norepinephrinechrome are followed E mechanisms. Some kinetic parameters about the electrochemical process, i.e. the electron transfer coefficient and number of electron transfered, alpha n = 0.38, the formal potential, E-1(0)' = 0.20 V, the standard heterogenous electron transfer rate constant, k(1)(0) = 1.2 x 10(-4) cm s(-1) for the oxidation of norepinephrine, alpha n = 0.37, E-2(0)' = 0.25 V and k(2)(0) = 4.4 x 10(-5) cm . s(-1) for the reduction of norepinephrinequnone and alpha n = 0.33, E-3(0)' = -0.25V and k(3)(0) = 1.1 x 10(-4) cm . s(-1) for the reduction of norpinephrinechrome, were also estimated.

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) was polymerized with the rare earth coordination catalyst-system of Nd(O - i-Pr)(3) in toluene. The influences of various ligands in neodymium complexes, molar ratio of Al/Nd, catalyst concentration, catalyst aging time, solvents, the third component CCl4, temperature and time on the polymerization of MMA were studied. The results showed that the polymerization conversion reached more than 80% at a catalyst concentration of 9.2 x 10(-3) mol/L. The appropriate molar ratio of CCl4/Nd was 4. Hydrocarbon was preferred for the polymerzation to obtain a high conversion and a high <(M)over bar w> of PMMA. The H-1 NMR spectra of PMMA indicated that the lower the temperature, the higher the syndiotactic content of PMMA was obtained.

A series of novel aromatic diamines (1-3) containing kinked cyclohexylidene moieties was synthesized by a reaction of excess aniline and corresponding methyl-substituted cyclohexanone derivatives. The structures of (1-3) were identifield by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and FT-IR. The polymers were synthesized from the obtained diamines and various aromatic dianhydrides by the conventional polycondensation reaction followed by chemical imidization as well as high-temperature one-step polymerization. The inherent viscosities and weight-average molecular weights of the resulting polyimides were in the ranges of 0.55-1.58 dL/g and (7.4-15.2) x 10(4) g/mol, respectively. The prepared polyimides showed excellent thermal stabilities and good solubility. All polymers were readily soluble in common organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, tetrachloroethane, etc., and the glass transition temperatures were observed at 290-372 degrees C.

A novel kind of K+ sensor with valinomycin-incorporated bilayers supported on a gold electrode consisting of self-assembled alkanethiol monolayers (SAMs) and a lipid monolayer has been fabricated successfully. The lipid monolayer is deposited on the alkylated surface of the first alkanethiol monolayer through three different methods, such as the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique, painted method and painted-frozen method. The response of K + sensors produced by a painted or painted-frozen lipid monolayer on an alkanethiol alkylated gold electrode is larger than that by the LB method, which is due to the difference in fluidity of the three kinds of bilayers. Selectivity coefficients KK+, Na+, KK+, Li+, KK+, Ca2+ and KK+, Mg2+ are 10(-4), 10(-4), 2 x 10(-5) and 3 x 10(-5) respectively, and there is no obvious difference among different fabricating methods. A linear response toward the potassium ion was found in the range from 10(-1) M to 10(-5) M with the detection limit of 10(-6) M. The sensor has a slope of 60 mV per decade. Meanwhile, the longevity of the sensor was improved obviously for at least two months at about -10 degrees C. The higher stability shows the possibility to fabricate a practical biosensor.
