The purpose of the present work is to investigate the compositional difference of polypropylene-polyethylene block copolymers (PP-b-PE) manufactured industrially by the process of degradation and hydrogenation, respectively. Each of the PP-b-PE copolymers was fractionated into three fractions with heptane and chloroform. The compositions of the three fractions were characterized by C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, as well as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal fractionation. The results showed that the Chloroform-soluble fraction was amorphous ethylene-propylene rubber, and the content of the rubber in PP-b-PE manufactured by hydrogenation was less than that by degradation. The degree of crystallinity of the chloroform-insoluble fraction of the PP-b-PE manufactured by hydrogenation is higher than that of by degradation.

Rare-earth ion (Eu3+, Tb3+, Ce3+)- doped LaPO4 nanocrystalline thin films and their patterning were fabricated by a Pechini sol-gel process combined with soft lithography on silicon and silica glass substrates. X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microcopy (SEM), optical microscopy, absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra as well as lifetimes were used to characterize the resulting films. The results of XRD indicate that the films begin to crystallize at 700 degreesC and the crystallinity increases with increasing annealing temperature. The morphology of the thin film depends on the annealing temperature and the number of coating layers. The 1000 degreesC annealed single layer film is transparent to the naked eye, uniform and crack-free with a thickness of about 200 nm and an average grain size of 100 nm. Patterned thin films with different strip widths ( 5 - 50 mm) were obtained by micromolding in capillaries ( soft lithography). The doped rare earth ions show their characteristic emission in the nanocrystalline LaPO4 films, i.e., Eu3+ D-5(0)-F-7(J) (J = 1, 2, 3, 4), Tb3+ D-5(3,4) - F-7(J) ( J = 6, 5, 4, 3, 2) and Ce3+ 5d-4f transition emissions, respectively. Both the lifetimes and the PL intensities of Eu3+ and Tb3+ increase with increasing annealing temperature, and the optimum concentrations for them were determined to be 5 mol% and 16 mol% of La3+ in LaPO4 thin films, respectively. An energy transfer phenomenon from Ce3+ to Tb3+ has been observed in LaPO4 nanocrystalline thin films, and the energy transfer efficiency depends on the doping concentration of Tb3+ if the concentration of Ce3+ is fixed.

Discrete wavelets transform (DWT). was applied to noise on removal capillary electrophoresis-electrochemiluminescence (CE-ECL) electropherograms. Several typical wavelet transforms, including Haar, Daublets, Coiflets, and Symmlets, were evaluated. Four types of determining threshold methods, fixed form threshold, rigorous Stein's unbiased estimate of risk (rigorous SURE), heuristic SURE and minimax, combined with hard and soft thresholding methods were compared. The denoising study on synthetic signals showed that wave Symmlet 4 with a level decomposition of 5 and the thresholding method of heuristic SURE-hard provide the optimum denoising strategy. Using this strategy, the noise on CE-ECL electropherograms could be removed adequately. Compared with the Savitzky-Golay and Fourier transform denoising methods, DWT is an efficient method for noise removal with a better preservation of the shape of peaks.

An amino isopropoxyl strontium (Sr-PO) initiator, which was prepared by the reaction of propylene oxide with liquid strontium ammoniate solution, was used to carry out the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters to obtain aliphatic polyesters, such as poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(L-lactide) (PLLA). The Sr-PO initiator demonstrated an effective initiating activity for the ROP of epsilon-caprolactone (epsilon-CL) and L-lactide (LLA) under mild conditions and adjusted the molecular weight by the ratio of monomer to Sr-PO initiator. Block copolymer PCL-b-PLLA was prepared by sequential polymerization of epsilon-CL and LLA, which was demonstrated by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and gel permeation chromatography. The chemical structure of Sr-PO initiator was confirmed by elemental analysis of Sr and N, H-1 NMR analysis of the end groups in epsilon-CL oligomer, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The end groups of PCL were hydroxyl and isopropoxycarbonyl, and FTIR spectroscopy showed the coordination between Sr-PO initiator and model monomer gamma-butyrolactone. These experimental facts indicated that the ROP of cyclic esters followed a coordination-insertion mechanism, and cyclic esters exclusively inserted into the Sr-O bond.

The conformation of microperoxidase-11 (MP-11) adsorbed on roughened silver electrodes was studied using surface-enhanced Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that MP-11 was initially adsorbed via its polypeptide chain with a alpha-helix conformation, as indicated by the enhancement of the characteristic bands related to the amides I and III. The weak resonance effect of the porphyrin macrocycle in the near IR region contributes to the spectrum of the heme group. The presence of imidazole as the sixth ligand to the heme iron influences the conformation of the polypeptide chain of MP-11 on the electrode surface. Evaporation of solvent water results in an opened conformation of the adsorbed MP-11. which allows the heme group to contact the electrode surface directly.

To synthesize the copolyester of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL), the transesterification of PHB and PCL was carried out in the liquid phase with stannous octoate as the catalyzer. The effects of reaction conditions on the transesterification, including catalyzer concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time, were investigated. The results showed that both rising reaction temperature and increasing reaction time were advantageous to the transesterification. The sequence distribution, thermal behavior, and thermal stability of the copolyesters were investigated by C-13 NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The transesterification of PHB and PCL was confirmed to produce the block copolymers. With an increasing PCL content in the copolyesters, the thermal behavior of the copolyesters changed evidently. However, the introduction of PCL segments into PHB chains did not affect its crystalline structure. Moreover, thermal stability of the copolyesters was little improved in air as compared with that of pure PHB.

The miscibility and hydrogen-bonding interactions of carbon dioxide and epoxy propane copolymer to poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC)/poly(p-vinylphenol) (PVPh) blends were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The single glass-transition temperature for each composition showed miscibility over the entire composition range. FTIR indicates the presence of strong hydrogen-bonding interassociation between the hydroxyl groups of PVPh and the oxygen functional groups of PPC as a function of composition and temperature. XPS results testify to intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions between the oxygen atoms of carbon-oxygen single bonds and carbon-oxygen double bonds in carbonate groups of PPC and the hydroxyl groups of PVPh by the shift of C-1s peaks and the evolution of three novel O-1s peaks in the blends, which supports the suggestion from FTIR analyses.

Nanocrystalline YVO4:A (A = Eu3+, Dy3+, Sm3+, Er3+) phosphor films and their patterning were fabricated by a Pechini sol-gel process combined with soft lithography. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and optical microscopy, UV/vis transmission and absorption spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and lifetimes were used to characterize the resulting films. The results of XRD indicated that the films began to crystallize at 400 degreesC and the crystallinity increased with the increase of annealing temperatures. Transparent nonpatterned phosphor films were uniform and crack-free, which mainly consisted of grains with an average size of 90 nm. Patterned gel and crystalline phosphor film bands with different widths (5-60 mum) were obtained. Significant shrinkage and a few defects were observed in the patterned films during the heat treatment process. The doped rare earth ions (A) showed their characteristic emission in crystalline YVO4 phosphor films because of an efficient energy transfer from vanadate groups to them. The Sm3+ and Er3+ ions also showed upconversion luminescence in a YVO4 film host. Both the lifetimes and PL intensity of the rare earth ions increased with increasing annealing temperature from 400 to 800 degreesC, and the optimum concentration for Eu3+ was determined to be 7 mol % and those for Dy3+, Sm3-, and Er3+ were 2 Mol % of Y3- in YVO4 films, respectively.

Conducting layers on KrF excimer-laser-irradiated polyimide film surfaces were investigated by XPS, SEM and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR)-Raman spectroscopy, Analysis of polyimide residue after laser irradiation provided valuable insight into the nature of the formation of conducting layers. The subtle different between KrF laser irradiation and the pyrolysis of polyimide was found by comparison of the formation process of conducting layers. A physical picture was presented to describe better the formation of conducting layers. Under KrF laser irradiation, polyimide films underwent thermal decomposition assisted by photoinduced direct bond breaking. Polycrystalline graphite was subsequently formed as the product of the secondary addition reaction of carbon-enriched clusters, Such reaction was supported by the remaining energy on the irradiated polyimide film surface. This result shows that the thermal process played an important role that was not just restricted to the formation of conducting layers, Copyright (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Multilayer films were fabricated by layer-by-layer electrostatic deposition techniques between poly(diallyIdimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) on glassy carbon and quartz substrates. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy demonstrated the uniform assembly of PDDA/DNA multilayer films, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the elemental composition of the films. Moreover, the interaction of DNA in PDDA/DNA films with methyl green was investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy and circular dichroism (CD). (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel method using LB films as precursors to prepare pure inorganic ordered film with periodic structure was developed. Surfactant-stabilized SnO2 nanoparticulate organosols and TiO2 nanoparticulate organosols were prepared and used as spreading solutions. Using LB technique, the good film-forming ability of the surfactant-stabilized SnO2 nanoparticles and TiO2 nanoparticles was confirmed by the determination of the pi -A isotherms. The surfactant-stabilized SnO2 and TiO2 nanoparticulate monolayers were fabricated on the water surface and then were transferred to solid substrates (CaF2, quartz, silicon, and so on) alternately, layer-by-layer. Then the as-deposited alternate LB film was treated at different temperatures. The as-deposited alternate LB film and the treated film were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicate that our method was successful. The as-deposited alternate LB film formed a periodic structure with a long spacing of 6.5 nm that was composed of SnO2 nanoparticles, TiO2 nanoparticles, and arachidic acid. The treated film composed of SnO2 nanoparticles and TiO2 nanoparticles formed a pure inorganic periodic structure with an ordered distance of 5.4 nm. (C) 2001 Academic Press.

A series of light-emitting poly(p-phenylene vinylene)s with triphenylamine units as hole-transporting moieties in the main chain were synthesized via Wittig condensation in good yields. The newly formed vinylene double bonds possessed a trans configuration, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and NMR spectroscopy. The high glass-transition temperature (83-155 degreesC) and high decomposition temperature (> 300 degreesC) suggested that the resulting copolymers possessed high thermal stability. These copolymers, especially TAAPV1, possessed a high weight-average molecular weight (47,144) and a low polydispersity index (1.55). All the copolymers could be dissolved in common organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), CHCl3, CH2Cl2, and toluene, and exhibited intense photoluminesence in THF (the emission maxima were located from 478 to 535 nm) and in film (from 478 to 578 nm). The low onsets of the oxidation potential (0.6-0.75 V) suggested that the alternating copolymers possessed a good hole-transporting property due to the incorporation of triphenylamine moieties. In order to investigate the influence of different alkyl side chain substitution on the structures and properties of P3ATs, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravity analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and ultraviolet-visible spectra (W-VIS) were applied to characterizing the samples of ploy(3-octylthiophene) (P3OT), poly(3-dodecylthiophene) (P3DDT) and poly(3-octadecylthiophene) (P3ODT). It is found that the different length of alkyl group substitution leads to great difference in molecular chain packings, according to the room temperature X-ray diffraction results. The temperature dependence of X-ray diffraction experiments were also performed to study the melting processes of P3ATs. With the increase in the number of carbon atoms in alkyl side chains, the melting point decreases, and the thermal stability decreases too. The results of both FTIR and W-VIS spectra indicate that the conjugation length of P3DDT is the longest. among the three P3ATs. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In-situ Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectra of native and thermally denatured calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) adsorbed and/or oxidized at a glassy carbon (GC) electrode surface are reported. The adsorption of native DNA occurs throughout the potential range (-0.2 similar to 1.3 V) studied, and the adsorbing state of DNA at electrode surface is changed from through the C=O band of bases and pyrimidine rings to through the C=O of cytosine and imidazole rings while the potential shifts negatively from 1.3 V to -0.2 V. An in-situ FTIR spectrum of native CT DNA adsorbed at GC electrode surface is similar to that of the dissolved DNA, indicating that the structure of CT DNA is not distorted while it is adsorbed at the GC electrode surface. In the potential range of -0.2 similar to 1.30 V, the temperature-denatured CT DNA is adsorbed at the electrode surface first, then undergoes electrochemical oxidation reaction and following that, diffuses away from the electrode surface. Chemical structure of fulvic acids extracted from composted corn stalk residue(CSR FA)was studied by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, H-1 and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance(H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR) spectroscopy. The results show that CSR FA mainly consists of four types of carbon: carbonyl, aromatical, alkyl and carbohydrate, the carbohydrate is dominant. Its aromaticity is 15.42%, less than that of CSR HA. This indicates that the construction of CSR FA is simpler than that of CSR HA, FA can not be extracted from undecomposed corn stalk residue. CSR FA may be formed by cellulose or hemicellulosemorties combined with aromatic compound from decomposed lignin.
