A series of aromatic copolyimides was prepared from 1,4-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride (HQDPA) and 2,2-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)hexafluoroisopropane dianhydride (6FDA) with 3,3'-dimethyl-4,4'-methylene dianiline (DMMDA) by a chemical imidization. The gas permeability coefficients of the copolyimides to H-2, CO2, O-2, N-2 and CH4 were measured under 7 atm. pressure. The fractional free volume of 6FDA-DMMDA is larger than that of HQDPA-DMMDA, while the chain segmental mobility of 6FDA-DMMDA is lower than that of HQDPA-DMMDA. The gas permeability of 6FDA-DMMDA is much higher than that of HQDPA-DMMDA but the permselectivity of 6FDA-DMMDA for H-2, CO2, O-2, N-2 over CH4 is lower than that of HQDPA-DMMDA. The experimental values of the gas permeability coefficients of the copolyimides are in satisfactory agreement with the values estimated from the gas permeability coefficients of the constituent homopolyimides and their weight fractions.

The gas permeation properties of a series of cardo polyaryletherketone materials are reported, In this series, the hydrogen atoms of benzene rings on the backbone are systematically replaced with different alkyl substituents. The effects of temperature and structure variation on gas permeability and selectivity are discussed in detail. The experimental results revealed that the polyetherketone obtained by the introduction of dimethyl and diisopropyl substituents to phenolphthalein unit is 3 similar to 6 times more permeable than the unmodified one for the gases studied.

The miscibility of blends of poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) has been investigated by means of NMR and DSC techniques. It is found that there are intermolecular interactions between the phenyl groups in SAN and carbonyl groups in PMMA or PEMA, and the strength of this intermolecular interaction strongly depends on the properties of ester side groups in PEMA or PMMA, composition of the blends and a certain composition of the copolymer. It is this specific interaction instead of the intramolecular repulsion force within the copolymer that plays a key role for the miscibility of SAN/PMMA and SAN/PEMA blends.

The miscibility and phase behavior of polysulfone (PSF) and poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) with a series of copoly(ether ether ketone) (COPEEK), a random copolymer of poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK), and phenolphthalein poly(ether ether ketone) (PEK-C) was studied using differential scanning calorimetry. A COPEEK copolymer containing 6 mol % ether ether ketone (EEK) repeat units is miscible with PSF, whereas copolymers containing 12 mol % EEK and more are not. COPEEK copolymers containing 6 and 12 mol % EEK are completely miscible with phenoxy, but those containing 24 mol % EEK and more are immiscible with phenoxy. Moreover, a copolymer containing 17 mol % EEK is partially miscible with phenoxy; the blends show two transitions in the midcomposition region and single transitions at either extreme. Two T(g)s were observed for the 50/50 blend of phenoxy with the copolymer containing 17 mol % EEK, whereas a single composition-dependent T-g appeared for all the other compositions. An FTIR study revealed that there exist hydrogen-bonding interactions between phenoxy and the copolymers. The strengths of the hydrogen-bonding interactions in the blends of the COPEEK copolymers containing 6 and 12 mol % EEK are the same as that in the phenoxy/PEK-C blend. However, for the blends of copolymers containing 17, 24, and 28 mol % EEK, the hydrogen-bonding interactions become increasingly unfavorable and the self-association of the hydroxyl groups of phenoxy is preferable as the content of EEK units in the copolymer increases. The observed miscibility was interpreted qualitatively in terms of the mean-field approach. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The mechanism of oxygen reduction on polycobaltprotoporphyrin IX dimethyl ester (PolyCoPP) film has been studied by using the rotating ring(Au)-disk(pyrolytic graphite, PG) electrode (RRDE) technique. The PolyCoPP/PG electrode promotes the oxygen reduction via two-electron process which produces peroxide as a main product in O-2-saturated 0.1 mol.dm(-3) NaOH. Once HO2- has been formed, no further reduction to OH- takes place at the disk. When the disk potential shifts to more negative, either the direct reduction of O-2 to OH- or the further reduction of HO2- to OH- occurs.

Gas permeability coefficients of a series of aromatic polyetherimides prepared from 1,4-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) benzene dianhydride (HQDPA) and four (methylene dianiline)s with a methyl side group to H-2, CO2, O-2, N-2, and CH4 were measured under 7 atm and within a temperature range from 30 to 150 degrees C. The gas permeabilities and permselectivities of these polymers were compared with those of the HQDPA-based polyetherimides from methylene dianiline (MDA) and isopropylidene dianiline (IPDA). The number and position of the methyl side groups on the benzene rings of the diamine residues strongly affect the gas permeabilities and permselectivities of the HQDPA-based polyetherimides. The gas permeability of the polyetherimide progressively increases with an increase in the number of the methyl side groups. Both the gas permeability and permselectivity of the polyetherimides with methyl side groups are higher than those of HQDPA-MDA. The polyetherimide prepared from 3,3'-dimethyl 4,4'-methylene dianiline (DMMDA1) possesses both higher permeability and permselectivity than the polyetherimides prepared from 2,2'-dimethyl 4,4'-methylene dianiline (DMMDA2). However, two of the polyetherimides prepared 2,2',3,3'-tetramethyl 4,4'-methylene dianiline (TMMDA1) or 2,2', 5,5'-tetramethyl 4,4'-methylene dianiline (TMMDA2) possess almost the same gas permeability and permselectivity.

The electrochemical reduction behavior of bilirubin (BR) at platinum electrode in DMF was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, in situ electron spin resonance spectroscopy and in situ rapid scanning thin layer spectroelectrochemistry. Experimental results revealed that the reduction of BR firstly undergoes an ECE process: GRAPHICS The generated (BR)(2)(3-). can be re-oxidized to BR and then to purpurin (Pu) by a series of oxidation processes: GRAPHICS However, the re-reduction reactions of Pu are not the reverse processes. The different reduction mechanisms are discussed in detail.

An integrated CaF2 crystal optically transparent infrared (ir) thin-layer cell was designed and constructed without using any soluble adhesive materials. It is suitable for both aqueous and nonaqueous systems, and can be used not only in ir but also in uv-vis studies. Excellent electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical responses were obtained in evaluating this cell by cyclic voltammetry and steady-state potential step measurements for both ir and uv-vis spectrolectrochemistry with ferri/ferrocyanide in aqueous solution, and with ferrocene/ferrocenium in organic solvent as the testing species, respectively. The newly designed ir cell was applied to investigate the electrochemical reduction process of bilirubin in situ, which provided direct information for identifying the structure of the reduction product and proposing the reaction mechanism.

The excimer fluorescence of a triblock copolymer, styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) containing 48 wt% polystyrene was used to investigate its miscibility with poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME). The excimer-to-monomer emission intensity ratio I(M)/I(E) can be used as a sensitive probe to determine the miscibility level in SBS/PVME blends: I(M)/I(E) is a function of PVME concentration, and reaches a maximum when the blend contains 60% PVME. The cloud point curve determined by light scattering shows a pseudo upper critical solution temperature diagram, which can be attributed to the effect of PB segments in SBS. The thermally induced phase separation of SBS/PVME blends can be observed by measuring I(M)/I(E), and the phase dissolution process was followed by measuring I(M)/I(E) at different times.

The miscibility of poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) with a series of poly(ethylene oxide-co-propylene oxide) (EPO) has been studied. It was found that the critical copolymer composition for achieving miscibility with phenoxy around 60-degrees-C is about 22 mol % ethylene oxide (EO). Some blends undergo phase separation at elevated temperatures, but there is no maximum in the miscibility window. The mean-field approach has been used to describe this homopolymer/copolymer system. From the miscibility maps and the melting-point depression of the crystallizable component in the blends, the binary interaction energy densities, B(ij), have been calculated for all three pairs. The miscibility of phenoxy with EPO is considered to be caused mainly by the intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions between the hydroxyl groups of phenoxy and the ether oxygens of the EO units in the copolymers, while the intramolecular repulsion between EO and propylene oxide units in the copolymers contributes relatively little to the miscibility.

The phase behaviours of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile)s (SAN) with poly(epichlorohydrin) (PECH) were examined using differential scanning calorimetry and an optical method using a hot plate. The PECH/PVAc blends showed LCST behaviour. The observed miscibility is thought to be a result of hydrogen-bonding interactions between the alpha-hydrogen atoms of PECH and the carbonyl groups of PVAc. Two SAN copolymers with an acrylonitrile (AN) content of 18 wt% (SAN18) and 25 wt% (SAN25), respectively, were also found to exhibit miscibility with PECH. No phase separation occurred by heating up to about 280-degrees-C, and the individual blend has a single, composition-dependent glass transition temperature. The formation of miscible PECH/SAN blends can be considered as a result of the intramolecular repulsion between styrene and AN units in SAN.
