The miscibility and hydrogen-bonding interactions of carbon dioxide and epoxy propane copolymer to poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC)/poly(p-vinylphenol) (PVPh) blends were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The single glass-transition temperature for each composition showed miscibility over the entire composition range. FTIR indicates the presence of strong hydrogen-bonding interassociation between the hydroxyl groups of PVPh and the oxygen functional groups of PPC as a function of composition and temperature. XPS results testify to intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions between the oxygen atoms of carbon-oxygen single bonds and carbon-oxygen double bonds in carbonate groups of PPC and the hydroxyl groups of PVPh by the shift of C-1s peaks and the evolution of three novel O-1s peaks in the blends, which supports the suggestion from FTIR analyses.

A surface emitting microcavity was formed by sandwiching a polymer film containing poly(N-vinyleabzole) (PVK). 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminium (Alq(3)) and 4-(Dicyanome thylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-Pyran(DCM) between a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) with a reflectivity of 99% and a silver film. The sample was optically pumped with 250 ps pulses at 2 Hz repetition rate by a 355 nm line of the third harmonic of a mode-lock Nd:YAG laser. The lasing phenomenon was observed in DCM-doped PVK microcavity. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) was 3 nm with the peak wavelength at 602 nm. The threshold energy for lasing was estimated to be about 3 mu J. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Multilayer films were fabricated by layer-by-layer electrostatic deposition techniques between poly(diallyIdimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) on glassy carbon and quartz substrates. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy demonstrated the uniform assembly of PDDA/DNA multilayer films, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the elemental composition of the films. Moreover, the interaction of DNA in PDDA/DNA films with methyl green was investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy and circular dichroism (CD). (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Novel optically active aromatic poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs) were prepared from newly synthesized 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxybenzamido)-1,1'-binaphyl dianhydride ((+/-)-, (S)-, and (R)-BNDADA). PAIs based on dianhydride monomers with different ee % were investigated with respect to their structures and chiroptical properties. These polymers were highly soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, pyridine, etc., and showed high glas s transition temperatures of 287-290 degrees C and 5% weight loss temperatures of 450-465 degrees C in nitrogen. Optically active PAIs exhibited high specific rotations, excellent optical stabilities, and a dependence of optical activities on temperature. Investigations on chiroptical properties indicated that chiral conformation was possessed by optically active PAIs. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A poly(o-toluidine) (POT)/2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMcT) composite was prepared. When POT and DMcT are mixed in a proper solvent, POT in a medium-oxidation state is reduced, and DMcT in turn is oxidized to its soluble dimer when the molar ratio of DMcT to POT is higher than 0.5. Therefore, the composite was soluble in organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), dimethylformamide (DMF), and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and exhibited very high electroactivity, two orders of magnitude higher than that of pure POT and three orders of magnitude higher than that of pure DMcT. Molecular-level contact between POT and DMcT is the reason for the improved catalytic effect of POT on DMcT, compared to that of polyaniline on DMcT. (C) 1999 The Electrochemical Society. The compatibilization effect of poly(styrene-b-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) diblock copolymer, P(S-b-EOx), on immiscible blends of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) and poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA) is examined in terms of phase structure and thermal, rheological and mechanical properties, and its compatibilizing mechanism is investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The block copolymer, synthesized by a mechanism transformation copolymerization, is used in solution blending of PPO/EAA. Scanning electron micrographs show that the blends exhibit a more regular and finer dispersion on addition of a small amount of P(S-b-EOx). Thermal analysis indicates that the grass transition of PPO and the lower endothermic peal; of EAA components become closer on adding P(S-b-EOx), and the added diblock copolymer is mainly located at the interface between the PPO and EAA phases. The interfacial tension estimated by theological measurement is significantly reduced on addition of a small amount of P(S-b-EOx). The tensile strength and elongation at break increase with the addition of the diblock copolymer for PPO-rich blends, whereas the tensile strength increases but the elongation at break decreases for EAA-rich blends. This effect is interpreted in terms of interfacial activity and the reinforcing effect of the diblock copolymer, and it is concluded that the diblock copolymer plays a role as an effective compatibilizer for PPO/EAA blends. The specific interaction between EAA and polar parts of P(S-b-EOx) is mainly hydrogen bonding. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The compatibilizing effect and mechanism of compatibilization of the diblock copolymer polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) P(S-b-4VPy) on immiscible blends of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO)/chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mechanical properties and FTIR measurements. The block copolymer was synthesized by sequential anionic polymerization and melt-blended with PPO and CPE. The results show that the P(S-b-4VPy) added acts as an effective compatibilizer, located at the interface between the PPO and the CPE phase, reducing the interfacial tension, and improving the interfacial adhesion. The tensile strength and modulus of all blends increase with P(S-b-4VPy) content, whereas the elongation at break increases for PPO-rich blends, but decreases for CPE-rich blends. The polystyrene block of the diblock copolymer is compatible with PPO, and the poly(4-vinylpyridine) block and CPE are partially miscible.

Binary blends of polyamide 1010/poly(propylene) and polyamide 1010 (PA1010)/poly(propylene)-graft-(glycidyl methacrylate) (PP-g-GMA) were prepared. The epoxy groups in PP-g-GMA react with the amino end-groups in PA1010, thus a PA1010-graft-PP copolymer is formed and acts as a compatibilizer between PA1010 and PP-g-GMA. The reaction was confirmed by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) and attenuated total reflection (ATR)-FTIR spectroscopic analysis, and also evaluated by the stability of the suspension obtained by dissolving the blends in formic acid and by the morphologies of the blends.

Structure changes and charge transfer in the doping process of poly(2,5-dimethylaniline) (PDMA) were studied by NMR technique. It was shown that not only the polymer chain but also the hydrogen atoms and methyl groups on the aromatic rings were involved in the charge transfer process. A ''four ring BQ derivatives'' model was proposed to explain the NMR results.

A series of liquid crystalline copolymers, poly{2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate}-co-{6-[4-(S-2-methyl-1-butyloxycarbonylphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate} with an azobenzene moiety as photoreactive mesogenic unit, was prepared and investigated by using DSC, polarized optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results show that these polymers exhibit smectic phases. Z-type Langmuir-Blodgett films of these copolymers were successfully deposited onto calcium fluoride and quartz. Reversible homeotropic and planar liquid crystal alignments were induced by using the photochromism of the LB films of one of the copolymers containing 20.6 mol % of the azo unit.
Compatibility and specific interactions in poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) and poly(p-vinylphenol) blends

The miscibility and specific interactions in poly (beta-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/poly(p-vinylphenol) (PVPh) blends were studied by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) , fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectrometer and high resolution solid state C-13 NMR, A single composition-dependent glass transition temperatures were obtained by DSC which indicate the blends of PHB/PVPh were miscible in the melt state, The experimental glass transition temperatures were fitted quite well with those obtained from Couchman-Karasz equation. The FTIR study shows that the strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding exists in blends of PHB with strong proton acceptor and PVPh with strong proton donor and is the origin of its compatibility. The CPMAS C-13 NMR spectra also show that the strong hydrogen bonding exists in PHB/PVPh blends. From the T-1 rho(H) relaxation time it follows that the blends of PHB/PVPh(40/60, 20/80) studied are completely homogeneous on the scale of about 3.2 nm.

Blends of poly(hydroxyether of phenolphthalein) (PHP) with poly(ether sulphone) (PES) were prepared by casting from a common solvent; they were found to be miscible and show a single, composition-dependent glass transition temperature. All the PHP/PES blends exhibited lower critical solution temperature behaviour, i.e. phase separation occurred at elevated temperatures. A F.T.-i.r. study revealed that a hydrogen-bonding interaction occurs between these polymers but it is weaker than in pure PHP. The observed miscibility is hence proposed to be the result of specific interactions between the polymers.
