Vibrational studies on the neuropentapeptide Leu5-enkephalin were performed for the crystal state where different specific conformations can arise. In the present case, the peptide adopts a double fused folded conformation (beta-turn), the presence of which in the crystal state is directly related to the nature of the solvent used for its crystallization. This study completes other work relating to similar conformations of isolated molecules. It can be seen that specific interactions in the crystal state perturb to a large extent the vibrational relationships between the amide frequencies and the specific sets of dihedral angles characteristic of the particular type of turn. The tyrosyl moiety and its frequency dependence on its hydrogen bond state was especially investigated both for the Fermi resonance and the hydroxyl bending modes.

Shrinkage, retractive stress, and infrared dichroism of the drawn low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as-drawn and irradiated by Co-60-ray have been measured under different annealing conditions. The shrinkage and the disorientation of the irradiated sample was undergone more rapidly than that of unirradiated one as the temperature was continuously increased, surpassing a certain value, and a higher degree of shrinkage and disorientation was achieved finally for the irradiated sample when the samples were annealed with free ends. For the samples heated isothermally with fixed ends, the retractive stress went through a maximum and then attenuated to a limited value, and the degree of such a stress attenuation for the unirradiated sample was much more than that for the irradiated sample. These results show that the taut tie molecules (TTMs) in drawn PE can relax by the pulling of chain segments out of crystal blocks that they anchored in at elevated temperatures higher than the a transition and also by the displacing of microfibrils if the samples were annealed with free ends. The cross-links produced by irradiation prohibit the former process. It was further observed that the dependence of the average extinction coefficient of the band at 2016 cm-1 on that of the band at 1894 cm-1 is related to irradiation and annealing conditions, which has also been explained by the relaxation of TTMs and the function of irradiation-induced cross-linking on the relaxation.

The criteria of polymer-polymer miscibility determined by viscometry are reviewed, and a new criterion is proposed based on the classical Huggins equation and the Huggins coefficient K(m) in the blends. It was found that, in a ternary (polymer-A)-(polymer-B)-solvent system, [GRAPHICS] In the absence of strong specific interaction forces between molecules that would encourage aggregation and at sufficiently low concentration, the above equation can be written thus: [GRAPHICS] This equation can be used to determine the miscibility of polymer blends, when: alpha greater-than-or-equal-to 0 miscible, alpha < 0 immiscible. It is found that the new criterion is reasonable and suitable to predict polymer-polymer miscibility by the viscometry method.

An expert system for solvent extraction of rare earths has been developed using LISP. The goal of this project was to mimic the chemists' inferential abilities to assist in the process of solvent extraction of rare earths. The system includes frequently used extractants, separation of specific rare earths, recommendation of procedures for the separation of mixtures of rare earths using (2-ethylhexyl)phosphonic acid 2-ethylhexyl monoester, selection of parameters for counter-current extraction and methods for evaluation of the technique, and the economics of the processing. The expert system runs on an IBM-PC/XT.

Solvent extraction of molybdenum and tungsten as homologues of Sg with a-benzoinoxime from HCl solutions has been investigated. The extraction equilibration was achieved at 20s for Mo and W. Molybdenum was almost quantitatively extracted from 0.001 to 4M HCl solutions, and the extraction yields decreased at higher and lower acid concentrations due to the formation of anionic oxychloride complex and anionic species MO42-, respectively. The extraction yield of W was lower than that of Mo during the whole range of acid concentration. The composition of the extracted species was determined by using the slope method in present experiment. The elemental analysis, IR and 1H NMR spectra of the extracted species suggest that the extracted complex contain one MoO22+or WO22+ groups bonded with two a-benzoinoxime molecules.

Recently, beta-thymosin-like proteins with multiple thymosin domains (defined as thymosin-repeated proteins) have been identified from invertebrate. In the present study, the cDNAs of two thymosin-repeated proteins (designated EsTRP1 and EsTRP2) were cloned from Chinese mitten crab by expressed sequence tags (EST) techniques. BLAST analysis presented three and two thymosin domains in EsTRP1 and EsTRP2, respectively, with the identities amongst the five domains varying from 47% to 100%. Both EsTRP1 and EsTRP2 shared high similarities with previously identified vertebrate beta-thynnosins and invertebrate thymosin-repeated proteins (TRPs) with the identities ranging from 43% to 78%, indicating that EsTRPs were new members of the beta-thymosin family. Real-time RT-PCR assay was adopted to determine the tissue distribution of EsTRPs and their temporal expression profile in hemocytes after pathogen stimulation and injury challenge. The expression of EsTRP1 transcript was predominantly detectable in the tissues of hemocytes, hepatopancreas and gonad with the highest expression in hemocytes, while the highest expression level of EsTRP2 was found in heart. EsTRP1 mRNA expression in hemocytes significantly increased at 3 and 48 h after Listonella anguillarum challenge, but there was no significant variation in EsTRP2 temporal expression profile. The injury challenge reduced the mRNA expression of EsTRPs, with the down-regulation of EsTRP2 expression occurred earlier than that of EsTRP1. The cDNA fragments encoding their mature peptides of EsTRP1 and EsTRP2 were recombined and expressed in Escherichia coli. The activities of recombinant proteins (rEsTRP1 and rEsTRP2) were examined by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide) and lysoplate assay. rEsTRP2 could significantly accelerate the growth of human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line, but there was no significant effect of rEsTRP1 on the tumor cell proliferation. Both rEsTRP1 and rEsTRP2 did not possess the ability of killing Micrococcus luteus and L. anguillarum. The differences in the tissue distribution of mRNA transcripts, the response to pathogen stimulation and injury challenge, and the effect of recombinant proteins on human cell proliferation, indicated that there were functional diversity between the two structurally different molecules, EsTRP1 and EsTRP2. A sensitive method for the determination of 30 kinds of free fatty acids (FFAs, C-1-C-30) with 1-[2-(p-toluenesulfonate)-ethyl]-2-phenylimidazole-[4,5-f] 9,10-phenan- threne (TSPP) as labeling reagent and using high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection and identification by online postcolumn mass spectrometry with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) source in positive-ion mode (HPLC/MS/APCI) has been developed. TSPP could easily and quickly label FFAs in the presence of K2CO3 catalyst at 90 degrees C for 30 min in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent, and maximal labeling yields close to 100% were observed with a 5-fold excess of molar reagent. Derivatives were stable enough to be efficiently analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography. TSPP was introduced into fatty acid molecules and effectively augmented MS ionization of fatty acid derivatives and led to regular MS and MS/MS information. The collision induced cleavage of protonated molecular ions formed specific fragment ions at m/z [MH](+)(molecular ion), m/z [M'+CH2CH2](+)(M' was molecular mass of the corresponding FFA) and m/z 295.0 (the, mass of protonated molecular core structure of TSPP). Fatty acid derivatives were separated on a reversed-phase Eclipse XDB-C-8 column (4.6 x 150 mm, 5 mu m, Agilent) with a good baseline resolution in combination with a gradient elution. Linear ranges of 30 FFAs are 2.441 x 10(-3) to 20 mu mol/L, detection limits are 3.24 similar to 36.97 fmol (injection volume 10 mu L, at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, S/N 3:1). The mean interday precision ranged from 93.4 to 106.2% with the largest mean coefficients of variation (R.S.D.) < 7,5%. The mean intraday precision for all standards was < 6.4% of the expected concentration. Excellent linear responses were observed with correlation coefficients of > 0.9991. Good compositional data could be obtained from the analysis of extracted fatty acids from as little as 200 mg of bryophyte plant samples. Therefore, the facile TSPP derivatization coupled with HPLC/MS/APCI analysis allowed the development of a highly sensitive method for the quantitation of trace levels of short and long chain fatty acids from biological and natural environmental samples.

The IR spectrum of 4-methyl-3-penten-2-one is interpreted with the aid of normal coordinate calculations within the Onsager self-consistent reaction field (SCRF) model, using a density functional theory (DFT) method at the Becke3LYP/6-31G* level. The solvent effects on the geometry, energy, dipole moment, and vibrational frequencies of 4-methyl-3-penten-2-one in the solution and in the liquid phase are calculated using the Onsager SCRF model. The calculated vibrational frequencies in the liquid-phase are in good agreement with the experimental values. The solvent reaction field has generally weak influence. For the two main bands of C=C and C=O mixed vibrational modes, small frequency shifts (5-6 cm(-1)), but relatively large changes in IR intensities (up to 101 km mol(-1) in the liquid phase) are found.
