Isothermal crystallization, subsequent melting behavior and non-isothermal crystallization of nylon 1212 samples have been investigated in the temperature range of 160-171 degreesC using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Subsequent DSC scans of isothermally crystallized samples exhibited three melting endotherms. The commonly used Avrami equation and that modified by Jeziorny were used, respectively, to fit the primary stage of isothermal and non-isothermal crystallizations of nylon 1212. The Avrami exponent n was evaluated, and was found to be in the range of 1.56-2.03 for isothermal crystallization, and of 2.38-3.05 for non-isothermal crystallization. The activation energies (DeltaE) were determined to be 284.5 KJ/mol and 102.63 KJ/mol, respectively, for the isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization processes by the Arrhenius' and the Kissinger's methods.

The present calculations were performed on the basis of the Sanchez-Lacombe lattice fluid theory and the new combinatorial rules for block copolymer according to the experimental results on the pressure-induced compatibility in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(ethylene oxide-b-dimethylsiloxane) (P(EO-b-DMS)) mixtures with UCST behavior. The study on enthalpy, combinatorial entropy, vacancy entropy and Gibbs energy upon mixture shows that Sanchez-Lacombe fluid theory and the new combinatorial rules could describe the pressure-induced compatibility (PIC) of polymer mixtures with UCST behavior well.

The cloud-point temperatures (T-cl's) of both binary poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-poly(ethylene oxide-b-dimethylsiloxane) [P(EO-b-DMS)] and ternary[toluene/PEO/P(EO-b-DMS)] systems were determined by light scattering measurements at atmospheric pressure. The phase separation behavior upon cooling in the ternary system has been investigated at atmospheric pressure and under high pressure and compared to the phase behavior in the binary system. The phase transition temperatures have been obtained for all of the samples. As a result, the pressure induces compatibility in the binary mixtures, but for the ternary system, pressure not only can induce mixing but also can induce phase separation.

The cloud-point temperatures (T-cl's) of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polydimethylsiloxane (P(EO-b-DMS)) homopolymer and block-oligomer mixtures were determined by turbidity measurements over a range of temperatures (105 to 130degrees), pressures (1 to 800 bar), and compositions (10-40 wt.-% PEO). The system phase separates upon cooling and T-cl was found to decrease with an increase in pressure for a constant composition. In the absence of special effects, this finding indicates negative excess volumes. Special attention was paid to the demixing temperatures as a function of the pressure for the different polymer mixtures and the plots in the T-phi plane (where phi signifies volume fractions). The cloud-point curves of the polymer mixture under pressures were observed for different compositions. The Sanchez-Lacombe (SL) lattice fluid theory was used to calculate the spinodals, the binodals, the Flory-Huggins (FH) interaction parameter, the enthalphy of mixing, and the volume changes of mixing. The calculated results show that modified P(EO-b-DMS) scaling parameters with the new combining rules can describe the thermodynamics of the PEO/P(EO-b-DMS) system well with the SL theory.

The branched crystal morphology of linear polyethylene formed at various temperatures from thin films has been studied by atomic-force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction (ED) pattern and polymer decoration technique. Two types of branched patterns, i.e. dendrite and seaweed patterns, have been visualized. The fractal dimension d(f) = 1.65 of both dendrite and some of seaweed patterns was obtained by using the box-counting method, although most of the seaweed patterns are compact. Selected-area ED patterns indicate that the fold stems tilt about 34.5degrees around the b-axis and polymer decoration patterns show that the chain folding direction and regularity in two (200). regions are quite different from each other. Because of chain tilting, branched crystals show three striking features: 1) the lamella-like branches show two (200) regions with different thickness; 2) the crystals usually bend towards the thin region; 3) the thick region grows faster by developing branches, thus branches usually occur outside the thick region. The branched patterns show a characteristic width w, which gives a linear relationship with the crystallization temperature on a semilogarithmic plot.

Isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of nylon-46 were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry. The equilibrium melting enthalpy and the equilibrium melting temperature of nylon-46 were determined to be 155.58 J/g and 307.10 degreesC, respectively. The isothermal crystallization process was described by the Avrami equation. The lateral surface free energy and the end surface free energy of nylon-46 were calculated to be 8.28 and 138.54 erg/cm(2), respectively. The work of chain folding was determined to be 7.12 kcal/mol. The activation energies were determined to be 568.25 and 337.80 kJ/mol for isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization, respectively. A convenient method was applied to describe the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of nylon-46 by a combination of the Avrami and Ozawa equations.

The effects of plasticizer ethylene carbonate (EC) on the AC impedance spectra and the ionic conductivity are reported. With increasing of EC concentration the semicircle in high frequency disappears, and the slope of the straight line in low frequency decreases. The data obtained from impedance experiments can be explained using an equivalent circuit proposed. On the other hand, the room temperature conductivity increases with EC concentration because of the increase of the segmental flexibility of PEO. For lower EC concentration samples, the temperature dependence of conductivity in low temperature range follows Arrhenius type, but when EC concentration is larger than 20%, the temperature dependence of conductivity obeys the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher (VTF) equation in all temperature ranges.

Sanchez-Lacombe (SL) lattice-fluid theory was used to predict the miscibility of the PEO/PVAc blending system. Integral interaction parameters, g of this polymer pair were calculated by using SL theory. And the effect of the temperature, composition of blends and molecular weight of PVAc on the extent of their miscibility has been discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The present report deals with some results on phase behavior, miscibility and phase separation for several polymer blends casting from solutions. These blends are grouped as the amorphous polymer blends, blends containing a crystalline polymer or two crystalline polymers. The blends of PMMA/PVAc were miscible and underwent phase separation at elevated temperature, exhibited LCST behavior. The benzoylated PPO has both UCST and LCST nature. For the systems composed of crystalline polymer poly(ethylene oxide) and amorphous polyurethane, of two crystalline polymers poly(epsilon-caprolactone) and poly[3,3,-bis-(chloromethyl) oxetane], appear a single T-g, indicating these blends are miscible. The interaction parameter B's were determined to be -14 J cm(-3), -15 J cm(-3) respectively. Phase separation of phenolphthalein poly(ether ether sulfone)/PEO blends were discussed in terms of thermal properties, such as their melting and crystallization behavior.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and silica (SiO2) organic-inorganic hybrid materials have been synthesized by sol-gel approach. The crystallization behavior of PEO in silica networks has been investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The degree of PEO crystallinity in PEO/SiO2 hybrid networks reduces with the increase of SiO2. PEO is in amorphous state when the concentration of PEO is lower than 50 wt% in the hybrid materials. The melting points of PEO in the networks are lower than that of pure PEG, but the melting point of PEO in the networks almost has the same melting point. WAXD and SEM results show that the crystalline behavior of PEO in PEO/SiO2 hybrid system is sternly confined. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Polyaniline (PANI), a member of the intrinsically conducting polymer (ICPs) family, was blended with polyamide-11 (polyco-aminoundecanoyle) in concentrated sulfuric acid. The above solution was used to spin conductive PANI/polyamide-11 fibers by wet-spinning technology. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were employed to study the two-phase morphology of the conductive PANI/polyamide-11 fibers. The micrographs of the cross-section, the axial section and the surface of the monofilament demonstrated that the two blend components were incompatible. The morphology of PANI in the fibers was of fibrillar form, which was valuable for producing conducting channels. The electrical conductivity of the fibers was from 10(-6) to 10(-1) S/cm with the different PANI fraction and the percolation threshold was about 5 wt.%. By comparing the two blend systems of PANI/Polyamide-11 fibers and carbon black filled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers, it was shown that the morphology of the conductive component had an influence on electrical conductivity, The former had higher conductivity and lower percolation threshold than the latter. Analysis of isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of nylon 66 was carried out using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The commonly used Avrami equation and that modified by Jeziorny were used, respectively, to fit the primary stage of isothermal and nonisothermal crystallizations of nylon 66. In the isothermal crystallization process, mechanisms of spherulitic nucleation and growth were discussed. The lateral and folding surface free energies determined from the Lauritzen-Hoffman treatment are sigma = 9.77 erg/cm(2) and sigma (e) = 155.48 erg/cm(2), respectively; and the work of chain folding is q = 33.14 kJ/mol. The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of nylon 66 was analyzed by using the Mo method combined with the Avrami and Ozawa equations. The average Avrami exponent (n) over bar was determined to be 3.45. The activation energies (DeltaE) were determined to be -485.45 kJ/mol and -331.27 kJ/mol, respectively, for the isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization processes by the Arrhenius and the Kissinger methods.

A composite solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) of (PEO)(10)LiClO4-Al2O3 was prepared and Pt and stainless steel(SS) blocking electrodes were used for an impedance study. It was found that the semicircle in the high frequency range and the straight line in the low frequency range depend upon different blocking electrodes and polarization potentials applied in the experiments. In the equivalent circuit. two constant phase elements (CPE) have been used instead of the pure geometrical and double layer capacitances. respectively. A theoretical line calculated from their estimated values has a good correlation with the experiment data. Moreover. the equivalent circuit also can be used to explain the impedance properties of Pt and stainless steel (SS) blocking electrodes both in the high and the low frequency ranges. Poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly (trimethopropane trimethacrylate) (PTMPTMA) interpenetrate networks have been synthesized. The confined crystallization behavior of PEO in the PTMTYTMA networks has been investigated by a differential scanning calorimeter and scanning electron microscope. The degree of PEO crystallinity in PEO/PTMPTMA interpenetrate networks reduces with the increase of PTMPTMA. PEO is in an amorphous state when the concentration of PEO is lower than 50% in the interpenetrate networks system. The melting points of crystalline PEO in the networks are lower than that of pure PEG, and the melting point of PEO in the networks is higher and increases with the increase of PEO in the interpenetrate networks. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction results show that the PEO crystallite size perpendicular to the (120) plane is not affected as much as PEO in silica networks. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
