A novel glucose biosensor based on capacitive detection has been developed using molecularly imprinted polymers. The sensitive layer was prepared by electropolymerization of o-phenylenediamine on a gold electrode in the presence of the template (glucose). Cyclic voltammetry and capacitive measurements monitored the process of electropolymerization. Surface uncovered areas were plugged with 1-dodecanethiol to make the layer dense, and the insulating properties of the layer were studied in the presence of redox couples. The template molecules and the nonbound thiol were removed from the modified electrode surface by washing with distilled water. A capacitance decrease could be obtained after injection of glucose. The electrode constructed similarly but with ascorbic acid or fructose only showed a small response compared with glucose. The stability and reproducibility of the biosensor were also investigated. The characterization of free base porphyrin 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octakis(hexyl-thio) tetraazaporphyrin (H(2)OHTTAP) and its zinc(II) complexes [Zn(II)OHTTAP] containing eight thioether groups at the beta -pyrrole positions of the macrocycle was reported. Results obtained by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry indicated a five-electron reduction in five steps for each complex. They were oxidized in two single-electron-transfer steps to yield pi -cation radicals and dications and reduced in three single-electron-transfer steps to yield pi -anion radicals, dianions and trianions, respectively. The redox property of H(2)OHTTAP was unusual as compared to porphyrins (PPs) and phthalocyanines (Pcs). Each process was monitored by in situ thin-layer spectroelectrochemistry, which indicated that only the Ligand was electroactive. The existence of the eight hexylthio groups was responsible for the intrastack interactions and enhanced intracolumnar and intercolumnar electron motions, resulting in improved conductivity. Conjugated bisthioester 1 was synthesized applying Sonogashira coupling reactions. Using self-assembly in combination with nanoparticles deposition techniques, we developed a novel method to fabricate a "gold electrode-molecular wire monolayers-gold nanoparticles" sandwich-like structure. Rapid electron propagation through this sandwich-like structure was observed by cyclic voltammetry and ac impedance measurements.

A polythiophene film was electrochemically deposited on a Pt micro-plate electrode and investigated by cyclic voltammetry and in-situ reflection microscopic FTIR spectroscopy. The FTIR analysis showed that the electropolymerization of thiophene on the Pt surface was affected Lv the surface adsorption processes of thiophene molecules. Two adsorption modes were identified. Two structure models of the polythiophene chain were observed simultaneously. It was proposed that the good conductibility of the polythiophene film was originated from a co-vibratory equilibrium of the link part of model I and model II.

A kind of solid substrate, glassy carbon (GC) electrode. was selected to support self-assembled lipid layer membranes. On the surface of GC electrode. we made layers of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPG, a kind of lipid). From electrochemical impedance experiments. we demonstrated that the lipid layers on the GC electrode were bilayer lipid membranes. We immobilized horseradish peroxidase (HRP) into the supported bilayer lipid membranes (s-BLM) to develop a kind of mediator-free biosensor for H2O2. The biosensor exhibited fine electrochemical response, stability and reproducibility due to the presence of the s-BLM. As a model of biological membrane, s-BLM could supply a biological environment for enzyme and maintain its activity. So s-BLM is an ideal choice to immobilize enzyme for constructing the mediator-free biosensor based on GC electrode. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Cobalt(II) hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) was deposited on graphite powder by an in situ chemical deposition procedure and then dispersed into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gels to prepare a surface-renewable CoHCF-modified electrode. The electrochemical behavior of the modified electrode in different supporting electrolyte solutions was characterized by cyclic voltammetry. In addition, square-wave voltammetry was employed to investigate the pNa-dependent electrochemical behavior of the electrode. The CoHCF-modified electrode showed a high electrocatalytic activity toward thiosulfate oxidation and could thus be used as an amperometric thiosulfate sensor.

Ultrathin multilayer films of a polybasic lanthanide heteropoly tungstate-molybdate complex and a cationic polymer of quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bipyridine) have been fabricated on a gold electrode precoated with a cysteamine self-assembled monolayer. The multilayer films have been characterized by optical spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical methods (cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance). Especially, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is developed to monitor the layer deposition processes. It provides important information such as double-layer capacitance and charge-transfer resistance. All obtained results reveal regular film growth with each layer adsorption. Three new asymmetrical ruthenium (II) complexes: [Ru(phen)(2){phen-NHCO(CH2)(4)Br}](PF6)(2), [Ru(phen)(2){phen-NHCO(CH2)(5)Br}](PF6)(2) and [Ru(phen)(2){phen-NHCO(CH2)(10)Br}](PF6)(2) were synthesized, which were confirmed by the technique of FT-IR, H-1 NMR and ESI-MS. The electrochemical and fluorescent properties of three Ru (II) complexes were investigated with cyclic voltammetry and fluorometry.

A self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (HSCH2CH2COOH) was formed on a gold electrode. The effect of the charge of the end group on the electrochemical response of Fe(CN)(6)(3-) at the SAM modified electrode was studied by using cyclic voltammetry. At high pH, when the -COOH groups are dissociated, Fe(CN)(6)(3-) current is suppressed; as the solution pH is lowered, Fe(CN)(6)(3-) current increases. The electrochemical titration curve was obtained by correlating the currents to the different electrolyte pH values, from which the surface pK(a) was obtained to be 5.2+/-0.1. Furthermore, a calculation equation was presented to simulate the electrochemical titration. As comparison, the surface pK(a) was also measured by contact angle titration as 5.6+/-0.1. The surface pK(a) values determined by the two methods in our work are consistent and accurate.

In this paper, an organic-inorganic composite film of heteropolyanion was Formed by attaching a Keggin-type heteropolyanion, SiW12O404-, on carbon electrode surface derivatized by 4-aminophenyl monolayer. The composite film thus grafted on carbon electrode surface has good stability because of the ionic bonding character between SiW12O404- and surface aminophenyl groups. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry were used to characterize the composite film. Compared with SiW12O404- electrodeposited on a bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE), the composite film gives three more sharp and well-defined redox couples attributed to two one- and two-electron processes, and the analyses of the voltammograms of SiW12O404- anion in the composite film modified on GCE shows that its surface coverage is close to a closest packing monolayer. STM characterization shows that a two-dimensional order heteropolyanion monolayer was formed on HOPG substrate. The composite film provides a favorable environment for electron and proton transfer between SiW12O404- ion and electrode surface, which may make it suitable for various applications in sensors and microelectronics devices.

Non-stoichiometric mixed-valent molybdenum(VI, V) oxide film was grown on carbon substrates by the electrodeposition method. Responses of the prepared molybdenum oxide thin films to potential and to different solution acidities were studied by cyclic voltammetry, and the corresponding morphological changes of the film were monitored by atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM images of the molybdenum oxide film show that the characteristic domed structure on the film surface increased during the transition from the oxidized state to the reduced state without signification change in the KMS surface roughness value. Furthermore, AFM studies show that the solution acidity has great effect on the morphology of the films, and the films undergo a homogenizing process with increasing pH of the solutions. In the presence of F-, OH-, Cl-, electrochemical redox of (OEP)Mg(II) [2,3, 7,8,12,13,17,18 octaethyl-21H, 23H-porphine magnesium (II)] are investigated in DCE/0.1 mol/L solution by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry, In the presence of anions, anions are axially coordinated to (OEP)Mg(II) generate (OEP)Mg(II)Y, the E-1/2 of (OEP)MS(II)Y oxidation are negatively shifted. A chemical reaction following the second oxidation step is observed, the E-1/2 of the reaction product is obtained. Mechanism of (OEP)Mg(II) in the halogen and OH- anions titration process has been proposed.

The electroxidation of ergosterol was studied by in situ circular dichroic (CD) spectroelectrochemistry with a long optical path length thin layer cell. It was confirmed that the oxidation of ergosterol in ethanol solution is a two-electron irreversible electrochemical process with strong adsorption of an electroinactive product at the glassy carbon electrode, which blocks the electrochemical reaction. The CD spectroelectrochemical data were treated by the double logarithm method together with nonlinear regression, from which the formal potential, E-0 = 1.00 V, alpha n(alpha) = 0.302, the standard electrochemical rate constant, k(0) = 6.1(+/-0.4) x 10(-4) cm s(-1) and the adsorption constant, beta = 19 +/- 1, were obtained. The number of electrons transferred (n = 1.86) was estimated by cyclic voltammetry.

A general strategy has been developed for fabrication of ultrathin monolayer and multilayer composite films composed of nearly all kinds of polyoxometalates (POMs), including isopolyanions (IPAs), and heteropolyanions (HPAs). It involves stepwise adsorption between the anionic POMs and a cationic polymer on alkanethiol (cysteamine and 3-mercaptopropionic acid) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) based on electrostatic interaction. Here a Keggin-type HPA SiMo11VO405- was chosen as a main representative to elucidate, in detail, the fabrication and characterization of the as-prepared composite films. A novel electrochemical growth method we developed for film formation involves cyclic potential sweeps over a suitable potential range in modifier solutions. It was comparatively studied with a commonly used method of immersion growth, i.e., alternately dipping a substrate into modifier solutions. Growth processes and structural characteristics of the composite films are characterized in detail by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis spectroscopy (UV-vis), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), micro-Fourier transform infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (FTIR-RA), and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). The electrochemical growth is proven to be more advantageous than the immersion growth. The composite films exhibit well-defined surface waves characteristic of the HPAs' redox reactions. In addition, the composite films by the electrochemical growth show a uniform structure and an excellent stability. Ion motions accompanying the redox processes of SiMo11VO405- in multilayer films are examined by in situ time-resolved EQCM and some results are first reported. The strategy used here has been successfully popularized to IPAs as well as other HPAs no matter what structure and composition they have.

A new nickel (II)-cyanometallates modified on glassy carbon electrode was prepared by a new method and studied by cyclic voltammetry and in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroelectrochemistry. It was found that the NiHCF film existed in two forms: Ni2Fe(II)-(CN)(6) and M2NiFe(II)(CN)(6), Fe(CN)(3)(6-) codeposited in the NiHCF film existing in free cation or bridged-bond state depended on the property of the cations in electrolyte: in NaCl and LiCl solution, it is in bridges-bonded, but in HCl and KCl, it is free.
