A new pyrophosphate long-lasting phosphor with composition of Ca1.96P2O7:0.02Eu(2+), 0.02Y(3+) is synthesized via the high-temperature solid-state reaction method. Its properties are systematically investigated utilizing XRD, photoluminescence, phosphorescence and thermoluminescence (TL) spectra. The phosphor emits blue light that is related to the characteristic emission of Eu2+ due to 5d-4f transitions. For the optimized sample, bright blue long-lasting phosphorescence (LLP) could be observed by naked eyes even 6 h after the excitation source is removed. The TL spectra show that the doping of Y3+ ions greatly enhanced intensity of 335 K peak and created new TL peak at about 373 K that is also responsible for the blue LLP. Based on our study, Y3+ ions are suggested to act as electron traps to improve the performance of the blue phosphorescence of Eu2+ such as intensity and persistent time.

A series of W-type ferrites with the composition of Ba1-xLaxCo2Fe16O27 (where, x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 020 and 0.25) were prepared by solid-state reaction method. The structure transformations of the ferrites were examined by XRD, DTA-TG and XPS, and the microwave-absorbing properties were investigated by evaluating the permeability and permittivity of materials (mu(r), epsilon(r)). The results showed that the phase-transition temperature increased with the addition of La2+ content, and a single-phase was formed at 1250 degrees C at last. Microwave properties were obviously improved as a result of the substitution of La3+ for Ba2+ at the frequency range of 0.5 similar to 18.0 GHz.

A novel solid solution Ce6MoO15 was achieved. Their structure and oxide ionic conductivity were studied. Based on Ce6MoO15, rare earth element substitution on cerium site shows that all resulting oxides enhance the conductivity further, and have high oxide-ion conductivity, which may be a kind of promising material for SOFCs.

A new europium (III) complex Eu(HFNH)(3)Phen (HFNH: 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6-heptafluoro-1-(2-naphthyl) hexane-1,3-dione; phen: 1, 10-phenanthroline) was synthesized and its triboltuninescent phenomenon was observed. Photoluminescence and triboluminescence spectra were successfully determined. The most intense triboluminescent emission originates front the transition of the, central Eu3+ ion from D-5(0) level to F-7(2) level. The triboluminescent spectrum is basically similar to that of photoluminescence, which correlates with the disorders of F atoms.

The synthesis and luminescence properties of Zn2SiO4:Mn phosphor layers on spherical silica spheres,i.e.,a kind of core-shell complex phosphor,Zn2SiO4:Mn@SiO2 were described.Firstly, monodisperse silica spheres were obtained via the Stober method by the hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane(TEOS)Si(OC2H5)4 under base condition (using NH4OH as the catalyst).Secondly, the silica spheres were coated with a Zn2SiO4:Mn phosphor layer by a Pechini sol-gel process.X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscope(SEM),energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum(EDS) and photoluminescence(PL) were employed to characterize the resulting complex phosphor. The results comfirm that 1000℃ annealed sample consists of crystalline Zn2SiO4:Mn shells and amorphous SiO2 cores. The phosphor show the green emission of Mn2+ at 521nm corresponding 4T1(4G)-6A1(6S) transition, and the possible luminescence mechanism is proposed.

LB films of 4-hexadecyloxybenzoic-terbium by using the subphase containing Tb3+ were prepared. The monolayer behavior of 4-hexadecyloxybenzoic acid (HOBA) on the subphase containing rare earth ions was studied. IR and UV spectra show that the rare earth ions were bound to carboxylic acid head groups and the coordination took place between the polar head group and the rare earth ions. The luminescence spectra show that the LB films have the fine luminescence properties, and the LB films emit strong luminescence under UV light irradiation.

A series of compounds, La2/3 - xLi3xMoO4, were first prepared. Their structures are tetragonal scheelites with the cationic defects. The cell parameters a, c and values of c/a decrease with the increasing of the substitution amount (3x) of lithium ion. Cationic vacancies are getting more as Li+ concentration is lower. The diffusion of lithium ion is predominant. The concentration of charge carriers increases with increasing the substitution amount (3x) of lithium ion, meanwhile, the concentration of cationic vacancies decreases. The conductivity approaches the best when the substitution amount (3x) of lithium ion is about 0.3. The conductivity of La0.567Li0.3MoO4 is 6.5 x 10(-6) S . cm(-1) at room temperature.

The polymerization of acrylonitrile was studied using ( diisopropylamido) his ( indenyl) lanthanides, Ind(2)LnN(i-Pr)(2)(Ln = Y, Yb) as a single-component catalyst. The effects of the amount of catalyst, monomer concentration and polymerization temperature on catalytic activity and molecular weight of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) were studied. The results show that the catalytic activity is raised obviously with rising polymerization temperature. The monomer conversion reaches 64% under polymerization temperature, monomer concentration and catalyst concentration are 50 degreesC, 5.1 mol . L (-1) and 0. 3 % (molar ratio) sequentially. The conversion and molecular weight of the polymer increase appreciably with adding additive, PhONa. When the molar ratio of PhONa to the catalyst is three I the conversion and the molecular weight is 76% and 1.32 x 10(4), respectively. The initiation mechanism for the polymerization of acrylonitrile was proposed.

The sensitized fluorescence intensity of terbium ion can be notably enhanced when the Tb3+-fleroxacin complex is exposed to 365 nm light. By the measurements of fluorescence spectra, phosphorescence spectra, fluorescence quantum yield and fluorescence lifetime of the system, it is proved that irradiation makes the complex undergo a photochemical reaction and produces a new terbium complex which is more favorable to intramolecular energy transfer. The mechanism of the photochemical fluorescence enhancement was discussed.

With the wide application of rare earth in agriculture, medicament, especially the application of Gd-DTPA as nuclear magnetic resonance image reagent in clinical practice([1]), the studies on the toxicology in biological body, as well as the study on the use as informative probes instead of divalent calcium ion in biological and biochemical research have attracted intensive concern([2]). Phospholipids bilayers have served as a model of biomembrane in the last two decades. The effects of metal ions on the conformation of polar headgroup of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) bilayers have been reported([3]). Sphingomyelin is major component of several biological tissues such as brain and nerve cells and has identical polar headgroup to DPPC. The interaction of metal ions with sphingomyelin bilayer remains nonrevealed. This note presents the results of the study on this aspect.

Ce3+ and B2O3 are introduced into erbium-doped Bi2O3-SiO2 glass to enhance the luminescence emission and optic spectra characters of Er3+. The energy transfer from Er3+ to Ce3+ will obviously be improved with the phonon energy increasing by the addition of B2O3. Here, the nonradiative rate, the lifetime of the I-4(11/2) -> I-4(3/2) transition, and the emission intensity and bandwidth of the 1.5 mu m luminescence with the I-4(13/2) -> I-4(5/2) transition of Er3+ are discussed in detail. The results show that the optical parameters of Er3+ in this bismuth-borate-silicate glass are nearly as good as that in tellurite glass, and the physical properties are similar to those in silicate glass. With the Judd-Ofelt and nonradiative theory analyses, the multiphonon decay and phonon-assisted energy-transfer (PAT) rates are calculated for the Er3+/Ce3+ codoped glasses. For the PAT process, an optimum value of the glass phonon energy is obtained after B2O3 is introduced into the Er3+/Ce3+ codoped bismuth-silicate glasses, and it much improves the energy-transfer rate between Er3+ I-4(11/2)-I-4(13/2) and Ce3+ F-2(5/2) -> F-2(7/2), although there is an energy mismatch. The fluorescence and up-conversion spectral properties of Er3+-doped TeO2-ZnO and TeO2-ZnO-PbCl2 glasses suitable for developing optical fiber amplifier and laser have been fabricate and characterized. Strong green (around 527-550 nm) and red (around 661 nm) up-conversion emissions under 977 nm laser diode excitation were investigated, corresponding to H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2), --> I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2) --> I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+ ions respectively, have been observed and the involved mechanisms have been explained. The dependence of up-converted fluorescence intensity versus laser power confirm that two-photons contribute to up-conversion of the green-red emissions. The novelty of this kind of optical material has been its ability in resisting devitrification, and its promising optical properties strongly encourage for their further development as the rare-earth doped optical fiber amplifiers and upconversion fiber laser systems.

For the Er3+/Yb3+ codoped fluorophosphate glasses, Judd-Ofelt theory is used to analyse the influence of YbF3 as not a sensitizer but an average component on the spectroscopic properties around 1530 nm emission. The double roles of Yb3+, as a sensitizer and as an average component, are discussed. It is found that Yb3+ as an average component contributes to the increase of fluorescence lifetime, and Yb3+ as a sensitizer has the best sensitization when its concentration is 2.4 mol%.
