Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) technique was used to measure the ion transfer in redox processes in electroactive organic thin films, such as self-assembled monolayer (SAM) (4-pyridyl hydroquinone, abbr. 4PHQ), multilayer based on SAM and conducting polymer film (here poly-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), abbr. PEDOT). A mechanism of mixed ion transfer is developed and presented. Analysis of mixed ion transfer during redox processes successfully elucidates the deviation of oscillation frequency of the quartz crystal from theoretical expectation.

A liquid crystalline (LC) copolyether has been synthesized from 1-(4-hydroxy-4'-biphenyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane with 1,7-dibromoheptane and 1,11-dibromoundecane with a 50/50 (both in %) equal composition of the 7- and 11-methylene monomers [coTPP-7/11(5/5)]. A mono-domain with a homeotropic alignment can be induced by a thin film surface in the LC phase. When an electrostatic field is applied to the surface-induced mono-domains parallel to the thin film surface normal, the molecular alignment undergoes a change from the homeotropic to uniaxial homogeneous arrangement. However, when the field is applied to a direction perpendicular to the thin film surface normal. the molecular alignment is about 10 degrees -tilt with respect to the homeotropic alignment toward the a*-axis. This is because the permanent dipole moment of the copolyether is not right vertical to the molecular direction. The calculation of molecular dipoles indicates that the permanent dipole moment of this copolyether is about 70 degrees away from the molecular axis, which leads to a negative dielectric anisotropy. It is speculated that the 10 degrees- rather than 20 degrees -tilt is due to a balance between the alignment induced by the electrostatic field and the surface. In the electrostatic field, molecules are subjected to a torque tau, which is determined by the permanent dipole moment P and the electrostatic field E: tau = P x E. The molecular realignment in both parallel and perpendicular directions to the thin film surface normal is determined by satisfying the condition of tau = P x E = 0. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Barium titanate (BaTiO3) powders with particle sizes of 30 similar to 50 nm were prepared from barium stearate, titanium alkoxides and stearic acid by stearic acid-gel method. Dispersing the agglomerate of BaTiO3 nanoparticles into poly(amic acid) solution followed by curing led to the formation of polyimide hybrid films. The hybrid films were transparent and well distributed with BaTiO3 nanoparticles when the BaTiO3 content was less than 1 wt%. Highly loaded hybrid film containing 30 wit % BaTiO3 was tough, had a smooth surface and possessed much higher dielectric and piezoelectric constants than the parent polyimide.

Ultrathin multilayer films of a polybasic lanthanide heteropoly tungstate-molybdate complex and a cationic polymer of quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bipyridine) have been fabricated on a gold electrode precoated with a cysteamine self-assembled monolayer. The multilayer films have been characterized by optical spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical methods (cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance). Especially, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is developed to monitor the layer deposition processes. It provides important information such as double-layer capacitance and charge-transfer resistance. All obtained results reveal regular film growth with each layer adsorption. Polyaniline (PAn) was doped with phosphonic acid containing hydrophilic tails. The solubility of the doped PAn in water was controlled by changing the length of hydrophilic chain in the dopant. When poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEGME) with molecular weight M-w = 550 was used as the hydrophilic chain of the dopant, the doped PAn was entirely soluble in water. The film cast from aqueous solution showed good electrochemical redox reversibility, Aqueous solution blending of PAn with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG, M-w = 20 000) and poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP, M-w = 360 000) was achieved. Percolation threshold of the composite film was lower than 3 wt.%. Electrical conductivity of the composite film was in the range of 10(-1)-10(-5) S cm(-1), depending on molecular weight of the acid and the content of PAn in the composite. We report several kinds of interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) with nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. DMA spectra show that the two components of the IPNs have good compatibility with each other. The NLO materials have good optical transparency. The thermal stability of alignment was improved and the poled order remained very high. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Physical properties of thin films of soluble and insoluble aromatic polyimides were compared by d.s.c., u.v.-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy, and prism coupler technique. D.s.c. results showed that the thermal properties of insoluble polyimides are superior to those of soluble ones, owing to the specific molecular interactions of insoluble polyimides, revealed by fluorescence spectroscopy. However, the specific molecular interactions sacrifice the transparency in their thin films, shown by u.v.-visible transmission spectra. Negative birefringence of thin films, not only for soluble polimides but also for polyamic acids of insoluble polyimides, was confirmed by prism coupler, while thin films of insoluble polyimides thermally imidized lack high levels of negative birefringence. It is regarded that thin films of insoluble polyimides thermally imidized are likely to be isotropic because of molecular relaxation above their glass transition temperatures (T-g) in the course of thermal imidization, according to Flory's principle. On the contrary, thin films of insoluble poyimide chemically imidized keep the same levels of negative birefringence as those of the relevant polyamic acid thin films. Judging from the opposite cases, it is recognized that molecular relaxation above T-g weakens the optical anisotropy of polyimide thin films. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), under certain conditions, shows a crystal transition between the alpha (TGT (G) over bar) and beta (TTT) forms, where T, G, and (G) over bar, respectively, denote trans, gauche, and minus gauche. We investigated the mechanism of this crystal transition by FT-TR and X-ray diffraction, which yielded consistent results. We also carried out differential scanning calorimeter experiments.

The diffusion coefficients(D-app) and the heterogeneous electron-transfer rate constants(k(s)) for ferrocene in MPEG/salt electrolytes were determined by using steady-state voltammetry. The temperature dependence of the two parameters obeys the Arrhenius equation. The effect of the ionic size of six supporting electrolytes on diffusion and electron transfer dynamics of ferrocene was discussed.

The electrochemistry of Prussian blue mixed in a polymer medium containing MClO4 (M = Li+, Na+, K+, TBA(+)) as the supporting electrolyte was studied by means of solid-state voltammetry. This approach is new in Prussian blue studies. The behavior of PB in polymer electrolytes is somewhat similar to the well-known behavior for an electrochemically synthesized PB film in aqueous media. Besides, K+, Li+ and Na+ ions can also transport through the crystal of PB because of its zeolitic nature. The transport of TBA(+) ions is possible. Kinetic control lies in the diffusion of cations in and out of the lattice of Prussian blue. Reduction waves of Prussian blue depend on both the size and type of cations. PB is very stable upon electrochemical cycling in polymer electrolytes and air. This system may be used in rechargeable batteries and electrochromic devices.

An organo-soluble polyimide was successfully synthesized by two step polycondensation accompanied with chemical imidization. Optical anisotropy of thin films was detected by a prism-coupler technique. The results showed that the optical anisotropic properties of thin films prepared from solutions in different solvents depend on the solution properties. It is concluded that the more expanded the chain conformation in solution, the larger the negative birefringence of thin films. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The diffusion coefficients(D-app) and the heterogeneous electron-transfer rate constants(k(s)) for ferrocene and its seven derivatives in MPEG/LiClO4 electrolyte were determined by using steady-state voltammetry. The two parameters increase with increasing temperature, indicating Arrhenius behavior. The effects of the nature of electroactive solute molecules on D-app, k(s), and the half-wave potentials(E-1/2) are discussed.

The recrystallization behavior of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) on the highly oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) substrates at temperatures below the melting temperature of HDPE has been investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy. The results obtained by the bright-field observation and the electron diffraction show that upon annealing the HDPE-quenched films on the oriented iPP substrates at temperatures below 125 degrees C, only a small amount of HDPE recrystallizes on the iPP substrate with [001](HDPE)//[001](iPP), while annealing the HDPE-quenched films at temperatures above 125 degrees C, all of the HDPE crystallites recrystallize epitaxially on the iPP substrate with [001](HDPE)//[101](iPP). The disadvantages of Normally White Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Display (NW-TN-LCD) were discussed. The reason that the negative birefringent polyimide thin films were used to compensate NW-TN-LCD to decrease off-axis leakage, improve contrast ratios and enlarge viewing angles was explained in this paper. A certain polyimide thin film was taken as an example to show compensation effect on NW-TN-LCD.

The effects of lamellar thickness on the epitaxial crystallization of polyethylene on the oriented isotatic polypropylene have been studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. The results obtained from the bright field electron microscopy and electron diffraction show that the epitaxial orientation of the PE crystals on the iPP substrate depends not only on the thickness of the oriented iPP lamellae, but also on the lamellar thickness of PE crystals. No epitaxial orientation relationship between PE crystal and iPP substrate can be found, when the PE crystals are thicker than the lamellar thickness of iPP along the matching direction. This suggests, that the epitaxial nucleation of PE in the PE/iPP epitaxial system is controlled not only by the chain-row matching, but also by a secondary nucleation process.
