The novel long-period fiber grating (LPFG) film sensor is composed of the long-period grating coated with solgel-derived sensitive films. The characteristics of the transmissivity of the LPFG film sensor are studied. By analyzing the relation among the sensitivity S-n, the thin film optical parameters, and the fiber grating parameters, the optimal design parameters of the LPFG film sensor are obtained. Data simulation shows that the resolution of the refractive index of this LPFG film sensor is predicted to be 10(-8). Experimentally, a LPFG film sensor for detection Of C2H5OH was fabricated, and a preliminary gas-sensing test was performed. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

A series-parallel model is introduced to calculate the effective thermal conductivities of hollow claddings of photonic crystal fibers ( PCFs ). The temperature distribution and thermal-optical properties of PCF lasers are studied by solving the heat transfer equations. The average power scaling of the PCF lasers in respect of the thermal effects is also discussed. (c) 2006 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

A kilowatt diode-pumped solid state heat capacity laser is fabricated with a double-slab Nd:YAG. Using the theoretical model of heat capacity laser output laser characteristics, the relationships between the output power, temperature and time are obtained. The slab is 59 x 40 4.5mm(3) in size. The average pump power is 11.2kW, the repetition rate is 1kHz, and the duty cycle 20%. During the running time of 1s, the output energy of the laser has a fluctuation with the maximal output energy at 2.06J, and the maximal output average power is 2.06kW. At the end of the second, the output energy declines to about 50% compared to the beginning. The thermal effects can be improved with one slab cooled by water. The experimental results are consistent with calculation data.

The coupling efficiency of laser beam to multimode fiber is given by geometrical optics, and the relation between the maximum coupling efficiency and the beam propagation factor M-2 is analyzed. An equivalent factor M-F(2) for the multimode fiber is introduced to characterize the fiber coupling capability. The coupling efficiency of laser beam to multimode fiber is calculated in respect of the ratio M-2/M-F(2) by the overlapping integral theory. The optimal coupling efficiency can be roughly estimated by the ratio of M-2 to M-F(2) but with a large error range. The deviation comes from the lacks of information on the detail of phase and intensity profile in the beam factor M-2. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a four-passed ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier (YDFA) is discussed. The gain and the pump and the signal light propagation characteristics of the four-passed YDFA are described. It is found that, while using a shorter length of the fiber, a four-passed fiber amplifier can realize the same output power as a single-pass fiber amplifier, and, for the same fiber lengths, a four-passed fiber amplifier offers a significantly higher power than its single-pass counterpart. Phase locking of a two-dimensional fiber laser array is experimentally demonstrated by using a self-imaging resonator and a spatial filter. The stable beam profiles of in-phase mode and out-of-phase mode are observed by controlling the position of spatial filter. The phase locking fiber array with in-phase mode has produced 26 W coherent output. An antisymmetric eigenmode is also observed in our experiments. The phase locking is not sensitive to power variations among the pump beams and the configuration has the ability to repair a missing element. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

To get high output power with good beam quality, a tapered section is introduced to large-mode-area (LMA) Yb-doped fiber laser. Output characteristics of the fiber laser without tapered section and with tapered section are compared experimentally. When the launched pump power is 119.1 W, 77.9 W with M-2 3.08 and 56.4 W with M-2 1.14 can be obtained, respectively. The corresponding slope efficiencies are 71.8% and 54.1%, respectively. Although output power of the tapered fiber laser has 30.6% penalty, brightness of it is as much as 5.28 times of the fiber laser without tapered section. Moreover, spectra of them are measured. It is found that tapered section makes lasing wavelength of the fiber laser shorter. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Graded-index (GRIN) fiber lens arrays are fabricated from commercial GRIN fibers to collimate a high-power laser diode array. The beam divergence angles are reduced to 4.2 and 14.7 mrad in the fast and slow axes, respectively. The influences of smile and fluctuation in fiber length are discussed. Using an aspherical focal lens system, about 74% power can be launched into a fiber with a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.22 and a core diameter of 400 mu m. The local structure of Na-Al-P-O-F glasses, prepared by a novel sol-gel route, was extensively investigated by advanced solid-state NMR techniques. Al-21{F-19} rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) results indicate that the F incorporated into aluminophosphate glass is preferentially bonded to octahedral Al units and results in a significant increase in the concentration of six-coordinated aluminum. The extent of Al-F and Al-O-P connectivities are quantified consistently by analyzing Al-27{P-31} and Al-21{F-19} REDOR NMR data. Two distinct types of fluorine species were identified and characterized by various F-19{Al-27}, F-19{Na-23}, and F-19{P-31} double resonance experiments, which were able to support peak assignments to bridging (Al-F-Al, -140 ppm) and terminal (Al-F, -170 ppm) units. On the basis of the detailed quantitative dipole-dipole coupling information obtained, a comprehensive structural model for these glasses is presented, detailing the structural speciation as a function of composition.

The upconversion properties of Er3+/Yb3+ codoped tellurite glasses and glass fibers with D-shape cladding under 980 mu excitation were investigated. Intense emission bands centered at 531, 546 and 658 nm corresponding to the transitions Er3+: H-2(11/2) -> I-4(15/2) , S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2), respectively, were observed at room temperature. Compared with that in Er3+/Yb3+ codoped tellurite bulk glass, the upconversion luminescence becomes more efficient in the fiber geometry. The dependence of upconversion intensities on fiber geometry and possible upconversion mechanism are discussed and evaluated. The presented Er3+/Yb3+ codoped tellurite fibers with intense upconversion luminescence can be used as potential host materials for upconversion fiber lasers. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.
