Nickel tungstate (NiWO4) nano-particles were successfully synthesized at low temperatures by a molten salt method, and characterized by Xray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultraviolet visible spectra techniques (UV-vis), respectively. The effects of calcining temperature and salt quantity on the crystallization and development of NiWO4 crystallites were studied. Experimental results showed that the well-crystallized NiWO4 nano-particles with about 30 nm in diameter could be prepared at 270 degrees C with 6:1 mass ratio of the salt to NiWO4 precursor. XRD analysis confirmed that the product was a pure monoclinic phase of NiWO4 with wolframite structure. UV-vis spectrum revealed that NiWO4 nano-particles had good light absorption properties in both ultraviolet and visible light region. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. Manganese-modified mesoporous MCM-41 molecular sieves were synthesized at the absence of alkaline metal ions under mild alkaline condition using cetylpyridinium bromide surfactant as a template, and characterized with X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption, transmission electron microscopy, electron spin resonance (ESR), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies. The synthesized MnMCM-41 has a high pore volume of 1.30 cm(3) g(-1) with a corresponding surface area of 1510 m(2) g(-1). The ESR and Si-29 MAS NMR spectra revealed the presence of framework manganese ions in either the as-synthesized or calcined forms. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel sol-gel process has been developed for the synthesis of amorphous silica-aluminas with controlled mesopore distribution without the use of organic templating agents, e.g., surfactant molecules. Ultrasonic treatment during the synthesis enables production of precursor sols with narrow particle size distribution. Atomic force microscopy analysis shows that these sol particles are spherical in shape with a narrow size distribution (i.e., 13-25 nm) and their aggregation during the gelation creates clusters containing similar sized interparticle mesopores. A nitrogen physiadsorption study indicates that the mesoporous materials containing different Si/Al ratios prepared by the new synthesis method has a large specific surface area (i.e., 587-692 m(2)/g) and similar pore sizes of 2-11 nm. Solid-state Al-27 magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR shows that most of the aluminum is located in the tetrahedral position. A transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image shows that the mesoporous silica-alumina consists of 12-25 nm spheres. Additionally, high-resolution TEM and electron diffraction indicate that some nanoparticles are characteristic of a crystal, although X-ray diffraction and Si-29 MAS NMR analysis show an amorphous material.

Magnesium nitride (Mg3N2) was synthesized by the reaction of magnesium in the highly reactive form (Mg*) with nitrogen at 450 degrees C under normal pressure. The effect of doping with nickel dichloride on the nitridation of Mg* was investigated. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) of Mg* systems and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurement of the product formed were carried out. TEM measurement showed that the particle size of the Mg3N2 synthesized was in the nanometric range. The dependence of nitridation of the NiCl2-doped Mg* on temperature was investigated at temperatures ranging from 300 to 500 degrees C. The nitridation of NiCl2-doped Mg* could occur even at temperature as low as 300 degrees C. (C) 1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Thiol-functionalized mesoporous ethane-silicas with large pore were synthesized by co-condensation of 1,2-bis(trimethoxy-sily)ethane (BTME) with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) using nonionic oligomeric polymer C1H (OCH(2)-CH(2))(10)OH (Brij-76) or poly(alkylene oxide) block copolymer (P123) as surfactant in acidic medium. The results of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen gas adsorption, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show that the resultant materials have well-ordered hexagonal mesoscopic structure with uniform pore size distributions. (29)Si MAS NNR, (13)C CP-MAS NMR. FT-IR, and UV Raman spectroscopies confirm the attachment of thiol functionalities in the mesoporous ethane-sificas. The maximum content of the attached thiol group (-SH) in the mesoporous framework is 2.48mmol/g. The ordered mesoporous materials are efficient Hg(2+) adsorbents with almost every -SH site accessible to Hg(2+). In the presence of various kinds of heavy metal ions such as Hg(2+), Cd(2+), Zn(2+), Cu(2+) and Cr(3+), the materials synthesized using poly(alkylene oxide) block cooollxmier (Pluronic 123) g(2+), as surfactant show almost similar affinity to Hg(2+), Cd(2+), and Cr(3+), while the materials synthesized using ofigomeric polymer C(18)H(37)(OCH(2)CH(2))(10)OH (Brij-76) as surfactant exhibit high selectivity to Hg(2+). Iron-substituted SBA-15 (Fe-SBA-15) materials have been synthesized via a simple direct hydrothermal method under weak acidic conditions. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), NZ sorption and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterizations show that the resultant materials have well-ordered hexagonal meso-structures. The diffused reflectance UV-vis and UV resonance Raman spectroscopy characterizations show that most of the iron ions exist as isolated framework species for calcined materials when the Fe/Si molar ratios are below 0.01 in the gel. The presence of iron species also has significant salt effects that can greatly improve the ordering of the mesoporous structure. Different iron species including isolated framework iron species, extraframework iron clusters and iron oxides are formed selectively by adjusting the pH values of the synthesis solutions and Fe/Si molar ratios. Nanocrystalline ZrO2:Eu was synthesized by complexing sol-gel method. The effects of heat treatment on structure, grain size and luminescence properties of ZrO2:Eu were studied with X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photoluminescence measurements. The dependence between the fluorescence emission and the crystalline structure is discussed. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Size-controllable tin oxide nanoparticles are prepared by heating ethylene glycol solutions containing SnCl2 at atmospheric pressure. The particles were characterized by means of transmission electron microscopic (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. TEM micrographs show that the obtained material are spherical nanoparticles, the size and size distribution of which depends on the initial experimental conditions of pH value, reaction time, water concentration, and tin precursor concentration. The XRD pattern result shows that the obtained powder is SnO2 with tetragonal crystalline structure. On the basis of UV/vis and FTIR characterization, the formation mechanism of SnO2 nanoparticles is deduced. Moreover, the SnO2 nanoparticles were employed to synthesize carbon-supported PtSnO2 catalyst, and it exhibits surprisingly high promoting catalytic activity for ethanol electrooxidation.
