The present paper covers the syntheses of 1,8-adipoylamido-bis(1,10-phenanthroline-5-yl)(bphaa) and its binuclear complex {[(bpy)(2)Ru](2)(bphaa)} (PF6)(4), where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine. The two novel compounds were confirmed by means of elemental analysis, IR, and LD-MS and H-1 NMR, and H-1 NMR spectra were completely assigned in virtue of H-1-H-1 COSY. chemical behavior of the binuclear Ru (I) complex was obtained using cyclic and voltammetry. Its photophysical property was investigated by electronic absorption, excitation and emission spectra.

A new kind of inorganic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) was prepared by spontaneous adsorption of polyoxometalate anion, AsMo11VO404-, onto a gold surface from acidic aqueous solution. The adsorption process, structure, and electrochemical properties of the AsMo11VO404- SAM were investigated by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), electrochemistry, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The QCM data suggested that the self-assembling process could be described in terms of the Langmuir adsorption model, providing the value of the free energy of adsorption at -20 KJ mol(-1). The maximum surface coverage of the AsMo11VO404- SAM on gold surface was determined from the QCM data to be 1.7 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2), corresponding to a close-packed monolayer of AsMo11VO404- anion. The analysis of the voltammograms of the AsMo11VO404- SAM on gold electrode showed three pairs of reversible peaks with an equal surface coverage of 1.78 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2) for each of the peaks, and the value was agreed well with the QCM data. In-situ STM image demonstrated that the AsMo11VO404- SAM was very uniform and no aggregates or multilayer could be observed. Furthermore, the high-resolution STM images revealed that the AsMo11VO404- SAM on Au(lll) surface was composed of square unit cells with a lattice space of 10-11 Angstrom at +0.7 V (vs Ag\AgCl). The value was quite close to the diameter of AsMo11VO404- anion obtained from X-ray crystallographic study. The surface coverage of the AsMo11VO404- SAM on gold electrode estimated from the STM image was around 1.8 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2), which was consistent with the QCM and electrochemical results.

The structure characterization of proteins or enzymes by STM on electrochemically prepared HOPG surface studied in this laboratory is reviewed. The serial structures of Hb were observed. The differences between the denaturation and inactivation of HRP were investigated by in situ and ex situ STM. The structural variation of Hb in an organic solvent was imaged while protein denaturation was easily observed in a polar solvent.

A new type of organic-inorganic composite material was prepared by sol-gel method, and a peroxidase biosensor was fabricated by simply dropping sor-gel-peroxidase mixture onto glassy carbon electrode surface. The sol-gel composite film and enzyme membrane were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and EQCM, the electrochemical behavior of the biosensor was studied with potassium hexacyanoferrate(II) as a mediator, and the effects of pH and operating potential were explored for optimum analytical performance by using amperometric method. The response time of the biosensor was about 10 s; the linear range was up to 3.4 mM with a detection limit of 5 x 10(-7) M. The sensor also exhibited high sensitivity (15 mu A mM(-1)) and good long-term stability. In addition, the performance of the biosensor was investigated using flow injection analysis (FIA), and the determination of hydrogen peroxide in real samples was discussed. The gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of C-60 with the plasma generated from methyl acrylate under self-chemical ionization conditions were studied by use of a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. The adduct cation [C60C3H3O](+) and protonated molecular ion [C60H](+) were observed as the major product ions. The former adduct ion is formed by electrophilic reaction of C-60 with the ion [CH2=CHCO](+), a main fragment ion resulting from the methyl acrylate molecular ion [CH2=CHCOOCH3](+) through alpha cleavage. The latter ion is generated by proton transfer from protonated methyl acrylate to C-60. Semi-empirical quantum chemical calculations have been performed for the eight possible isomers of [C60C3H3O](+) at the Hartree-Fock level by use of the AMI method. The results show three types of cycloadducts as the most stable structures among the possible isomers.
Electrochemistry and spectroscopy study on the interaction of microperoxidase-11 with lipid membrane
Resumo:
The interaction of microperoxidase-11 (MP11) with cationic lipid vesicles of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) induces an alpha -helical conformation from random coil conformations in solution and this change then makes heme macrocycle more distorted. DDAB-induced MP11 conformations were investigated by cyclic votammetry (CV), circular dichroism (CD) and UV-vis spectrometry. All results indicate that the binding of MP11 in solution to DDAB vesicles and the ordered structure formation are driven by mostly electrostatic interaction between negatively charged residues in the undecapeptide and positively charged lipid headgroups on the membrane surface. Upon binding to DDAB, its half-peak potential was also changed. The mechanism of the interaction between MP11 and DDAB was also discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel amperometric biosensor for the detection of hydrogen peroxide was described. The biosensor was constructed by electrodepositing HRP/PPy membrane on the surface of ferrocenecarboxylic acid mediated sol-gel derived composite carbon electrode. The biosensor gave response to hydrogen peroxide in a few seconds with detection limit of 5.0 x 10(-5) M (based on signal:noise = 3). Linear range was upto 0.2 mM. The biosensor exhibited a good stability. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

An electrochemically stable monolayer of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) was obtained for the first time. It was based on the electrostatic attachment of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) to the benzene sulfonic acid monolayer film, which was covalently bound onto glassy carbon electrode by the electrochemical reduction of diazobenzene sulfonic acid. The surface-confined Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) underwent reversible surface process, and reacted with the coreactant, tripropylamine, to produce electrochemiluminescence. In view of the stability of the electrode, the results strongly suggested that light was emitted from the surface-confined Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), not from the detached Ru(bpy)(3)(2+). The Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) modified electrode was used to the determination of tripropylamine. It showed good linearity in the concentration range from 5 muM to 1 muM with a detection limit of 1 muM (S/N = 4). The good stability of the Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) modified electrode also showed that the benzene sulfonic acid monolayer film prepared can be served as an excellent support to construct multilayers. Individual hydrophobically modified ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (HM-EHEC) molecules under different conditions were elongated using a new atomic force microscope (AFM) based technique-single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS). The critical concentration of HM-EHEC for micelle-like clusters at a solid/liquid interface was around 0.8 wt %, which is lower than that in solution. The different mechanical properties of HM-EHEC below and above the critical concentration were displayed on force-extension curves. Through a comparison with unmodified hydroxyethyl cellulose, substituent-induced effects on nanomechanical features of HM-EHEC were investigated. Because of hydrophobic interactions and cooperative binding with the polymer, surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) dramatically influence the elastic properties of HM-EHEC below the critical concentration, and further addition of SDS reduces the interactions between the hydrophobic groups and the surfactant.

The gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of C-60 with the methoxymethyl ion [CH3O=CH2](+) and the 1-hydroxyethyl ion [CH3CH=OH](+) generated under the self-chemical-ionization (self-CI) conditions of alkyl methyl ethers and primary alcohols were studied in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. The adduct ions [C60C2H5O](+) and protonated molecules [C60H](+) were observed as the major products of C-60 with the plasma of alkyl methyl ethers. On the contrary, the reactions of C-60 With the plasmas of primary alcohols produced few corresponding adduct ions. The AM1 semiempirical molecular orbital calculations were carried out on 14 possible structures. The calculated results showed that the most stable structure among the possible isomers of [C60C2H5O](+) is the [3+2] cycloadduct. According to experimental and theoretical results, the pathway for the formation of the adduct was presented.

A new series of Ru(II) polypyridine surfactants, Ru(bpy)(2)[phenNH CO(CH2)(n)CH3](PF6)(2), where n is 10, 12, 14 or 16, has been prepared and characterized. The H-1-NMR spectra of these new Ru(II) complexes were attributed and discussed by the H-1-H-1 COSY method. The comparative analysis of IR spectra of these complexes and their responding free ligands has shown that there are intensive d --> pi* feedback interactions between central Ru(II) and their ligands. Their fluorescent, electrochemical and electrochemiluminescent behaviours are also reported.
