A new type of inorganic-organic hybrid material incorporating carbon powder and alpha -type 2:18-molybdodiphosphate (P2Mo18) in a methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMOS) based gel has been produced by a sol-gel process and used to fabricate a chemically modified electrode. The P2Mo18-doped carbon ceramic composite electrode was characterized using SEM and cyclic voltammetry. Square-wave voltammetry with an excellent sensitivity was exploited to conveniently investigate the dependence of current and half-wave potential (E-1/2) on pH. The chemically modified electrode has some advantages over the modified film electrodes constructed by the conventional methods, such as long-term stability, reproducibility, and especially repeatability of surface-renewal by simple polishing in the event of surface fouling or dopant leaching. In addition, the modified electrode shows a good catalytic activity for the electrochemical reduction of bromate in an acidic aqueous solution. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

With the cyclic voltammetry and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), the oxidation process and the electrodeposition behavior were studyied during the electrochemical oxidation of 2-mercaptobenzimidazol in aqueous solution. The E-pH diagram was also gained. These results showed the oxidation reaction was one electron reaction. The results from X-ray photoelectron spectrometry verified that the 2-mercaptobenzimidazol was oxidized to bisbenzimidazoyl disulfide.

4-Aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) was covalently grafted on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by amine cation radical formation in the electrooxidation process of the amino-containing compound. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement proves the presence of 4-carboxylphenylamine monolayer on the GCE. The redox responses of various electroactive probes were investigated on the 4-ABA-modified GCE. Electron transfer to Fe(CN)(6)(3-) in solutions of various pHs was studied by both cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance analysis on the modified electrode. Changes in the solution pH value result in the variation of the terminal group charge state, based on which surface pK(a) values are estimated. The 4-ABA-modified GCE was used as a suitable charged substrate to fabricate polyoxometalates-consisting (POM-consisting) monolayer and multilayer films through layer-by-layer assembly based on electrostatic attraction. Cyclic voltammetry shows the uniform growth of these three-dimensional multilayer films. Taking K10H3[Pr-(SiMo7W4O39)(2)]. H2O (abbreviated as Pr(SiMo7W4)(2)), for example, the preparation and electrochemical behavior of its monolayer and multilayer film had been investigated in detail. This modification strategy is proven to be a general one suitable for anchoring many kinds of POMs on the 4-ABA-modified GCE.

The anodic voltammetric behavior of medecamycin (MD) in the presence of various electrolytes was studied by linearsweep voltammetry, differential-pulse voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry at a glassy carbon electrode. In phosphate buffer solutions (pH = 9.4), MD is oxidized irreversibly. The peak potential is at about +0.75 V (vs.Ag/AgCl). The height of the peak is linearly increased with the concentration of MD over the range of 5 x 10(-5) similar to 1 x 10(-1) g/L. The method has been used for the direct determination of MD in tablets. The relative standard deviation (n = 10) is 1.8%. The recoveries of MD in urine samples are in the range of 95% similar to 115%.

A novel 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) monolayer film is formed on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by amino cation radical method. Silicotungstic heteropolyanion (SiW12O404-, denoted as SiW12)-containing multilayer films have been fabricated on the 4-ABA modified GCE surface by alternate deposition with a quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with [Os(bpy)(2)Cl](2+/+) (denoted as QPVP-Os). Cyclic voltammetry (CV), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray reflectivity (XR) have been used to characterise the as-prepared multilayer films. It is proved that the multilayer films are uniform and stable. The average thickness for a bilayer of QPVP-Os/SiW12 in the multilayer film is 30.2 Angstrom. The electrocatalytic activities of the multilayer films have been investigated on the reduction of three substrates of important analytical interests, HNO2, BrO3- and H2O2. Especially, the influence of layer number of the multilayer films on the electrocatalytic reduction of HNO2 has been investigated in detail. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The microregion approximation explicit finite difference method is used to simulate cyclic voltammetry of an electrochemical reversible system in a three-dimensional thin layer cell with minigrid platinum electrode. The simulated CV curve and potential scan-absorbance curve were in very good accordance with the experimental results, which differed from those at a plate electrode. The influences of sweep rate, thickness of the thin layer, and mesh size on the peak current and peak separation were also studied by numerical analysis, which give some instruction for choosing experimental conditions or designing a thin layer cell. The critical ratio (1.33) of the diffusion path inside the mesh hole and across the thin layer was also obtained. If the ratio is greater than 1.33 by means of reducing the thickness of a thin layer, the electrochemical property will be far away from the thin layer property.

The efficient synthesis of 5-(5-bromovaleramido)-1,10-phenanthroline, 5-(6-bromohexanamido)-1,10-phenanthroline, and 5-(11-bromoundecanamido)-1,10-phenanthroline are described, which reacted with cis-Ru(bpy)(2)Cl-2. 2H(2)O and sodium hexafluorophosphate to form Ru(bpy)(2)[phen-NHCO(CH2)(n)Br](PF6)(2) (n = 4, 5 or 10; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). The intricate H-1 NMR spectra at low field of these complexes were completely assigned in virtue of H-1-H-1 COSY technique. Cyclic voltammetry was used to study electrochemical behaviours of these complexes, and their luminescent properties were investigated with fluorescent spectra.

A new type of silicomolybdate-methylsilicate-graphite composite material was prepared by the sol-gel technique and used for the fabrication of an amperometric nitrite sensor. The silicomolybdic anion acts as a catalyst, the graphite powder ensures conductivity by percolation, the silicate provides a rigid porous backbone and the methyl groups endow hydrophobicity and thus limit the wetting section of the modified electrode. Cyclic voltammetry, square-wave voltammetry and chronoamperometry were employed to characterize the sensor. The amperometric nitrite sensor exhibited a series of good properties: high sensitivity (1.771 mu A mmol(-1) dm(3)), a short response time (7 s), remarkable long-term stability and especially reproducibility of surface renewal in the event of electrode surface fouling.

The preparation, structure, and electrochemical and electrocatalytical properties of a new polyoxometalate-based organic/inorganic film, composed of cetyl pyridinum 11-molybdovanadoarsenate (CPMVA) molecules, have been studied. Cyclic potential scanning in acetone solution led to a stable CPMVA film formed on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry were used for characterizing the structure and properties of the CPMVA film. These studies indicated that self-aggregated clusters were formed on a freshly cleaved HOPG surface, while a self-organized monolayer was formed on the precathodized HOPG electrode. The CPMVA film exhibited reversible redox kinetics both in acidic aqueous and in acetone solution, which showed that it could be used as a catalyst even in organic phase. The CPMVA film remained stable even at pH > 7.0, and the pH dependence of the film was much smaller than that of its inorganic film (H4AsMo11VO40) in aqueous solution. The CPMVA film showed strong electrocatalysis on the reduction of bromate, and the catalytic currents were proportional to the square of the concentration of bromate. The new kind of polyoxometalate with good stability may have extensive promise in catalysis.

We reported on the multilayer architecture containing diazo-resins (DAR) as polycations and polyaniline poly(aniline-co-N-propanesulfonic acid aniline) (PAPSAH) as polyanions held together by electrostatic interaction. Upon UV irradiation, the adjacent interfaces of the multilayer reacted to form a covalently crosslinking structure which greatly improved the stability of the films as confirmed by solvent etching experiments. These changes were confirmed by UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy. The thickness of the covalently attached films were characterized with small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXD) and a value of 30.0 Angstrom per bilayer was obtained. This type of film was further characterized by cyclic voltammetry which showed that the electroactive property of PAPSAH was still kept in the films after photoreaction. Electrocatalytic reduction of O-2 and H2O2 at the glass carbon electrode modified with microperoxidase-11 immobilized with Nafion film has been studied by means of cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode techniques. The modified electrode shows high catalytic activity toward the reduction of both O-2 and H2O2. The rate constants of Oz and H2O2 reduction at the modified electrode have been measured and compared. It is found that O-2 undergoes a four-electron reduction at the modified electrode and the catalytic activity for the reduction of O-2 is dependent on the pH of the solutions.

The self-assembled monolayer(SAM) of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid [HS(CH2)(10)COOH] was formed on a gold electrode and the effect of the charge of end group on the electrochemical response of Fe(CN)(6)(3-) at the SAM modified electrode was studied by cyclic voltammetry. At high pH, when the -COOH groups are dissociated, the current of Fe(CN)(6)(3-) is suppressed; as the solution pH is lowered, the current of Fe(CN)(6)(3-) increases. The electrochemical titration curve was obtained by correlating the currents of Fe(CN)(6)(3-) to the different pH values of electrolyte, from which the surface pK(a) was obtained to be 3. 0+/-0. 2. Furthermore, the reason of small pK(a) value was explained using SAMs of different surface coverage.

A hydrogen peroxide biosensor was fabricated by coating a sol-gel-peroxidase layer onto a Nafion-methylene green modified electrode. Immobilization of methylene green (MG) was attributed to the electrostatic force between MG(+) and the negatively charged sulfonic acid groups in Nafion polymer, whereas immobilization of horseradish peroxidase was attributed to the encapsulation function of the silica sol-gel network. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were employed to demonstrate the feasibility of electron transfer between sol-gel-immobilized peroxidase and a glassy carbon electrode. Performance of the sensor was evaluated with respect to response time, sensitivity as well as operational stability. The enzyme electrode has a sensitivity of 13.5 mu A mM(-1) with a detection limit of 1.0 x 10(-7) M H2O2, and the sensor achieved 95% of the steady-state current within 20 s. The anodic voltammetric behavior of inosine (I) was investigated by linar-sweep voltammetry, differential-pulse voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry at a glassy carbon electrode. In a medium of 0.1 mol/L N2HPO4, inosine showed a well defined anodic peak. The peak potential was about 1.42 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). A linear relationship held between the peak current and the concentration of inosine in the rang of 5 x 10(-4) similar to 8 x 10(-2) g/L. The peak potential decreased with the decrease of the acidity of the solution. The four anodic peaks of inosine with hypoxanthine, xanthine and uric acid were obtained. Their peak potentials were about at 1.42, 1.07, 0.72 and 0.26 Vt vs. Ag/AgCl). The method has been used for the direct determination of inosine in injections. Recoveries of inosine in urine samples were about 85%. Experimental result proved that the electrode reaction was diffusion-controlled and irreversible.

We describe here a controlled fabrication of ultrathin monolayer and multilayer films consisting of silicotungstic heteropolyanion SiW12O404- and a cationic polymer of quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bipyridine) on Au electrodes previously self-assembled with cysteamine monolayers based on layer-by-layer electrostatic interaction. The thus-forming monolayer and multilayer chemically modified electrodes are investigated by cyclic voltammetry on their electrochemical behavior and electrocatalytic properties. The composite ultrathin films exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic effects on the reduction of BrO3-, H2O2, and HNO2. The electrocatalytic effects on HNO2 reduction are enhanced with increasing layer number from 1 to 3 but level off with much thicker multilayers. The stability of the monolayer and multilayer films is also examined. (C) 2000 The Electrochemical Society. S0013-4651(99)04-057-4. All rights reserved.
