Characterization of organic-inorganic multilayer films by cyclic voltammetry, UV-Vis spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray diffraction and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

We have employed several techniques, including cyclic voltammetry, UV-Vis spectrometry, small-angle X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, to characterize the formation processes and interfacial features of ultrathin multilayer films of silicotungstate and a cationic redox polymer on cysteamine-coated Au electrodes self-assembled monolayers. All of these techniques confirm that the multilayer films are built up stepwise as well as uniformly in a layer-by-layer fashion. In particular, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is successfully used to monitor the multilayer deposition processes. It has been proved that the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is a very useful technique in characterization of multilayer films because it provides valuable information about the interfacial impedance features.

Cardo polyarylethersulfones and polyaryletherketones bearing alkyl substituents on the phenylene unit

A series of cardo polyaryletherketones and polyaryletersulfones containing alkyl substituents of a different kind, number and volume were synthesized from bis(4-nitrophenyl)ketone or bis(4-fluorophenyl)sulfone with various alkyl substituted phenolphthaleins by polycondensation using K2CO3 as catalyst. Their chemical and aggregation structures were confirmed by FT-IR, H-1-NMR and WAXD. The resulting polymers were soluble in a variety of common polar solvents and, transparent, colorless, and tough films could be easily cast from 1,1,2-trichluoroethane solution. Their tensile strength, elongation at break and tensile modulis were in the range of 70.5 similar to 97.1MPa, 4.49%similar to7.81%, and 1.69 similar to2.27GPa, respectively. The prepared polymers had reasonably high glass transition temperatures at 207 to 269 degreesC, and showed fairly good thermal stability with 5% thermal decomposition loss above 410 degreesC.

Aggregation behavior of amphiphilic D-pi-A molecules bearing recognition group

Aggregation behavior of two amphiphilic D-pi -A molecules bearing barbituric acid as both recogniton group and electron-drawing substituent, 5-(4-dodecyl oxybenzylidene)-(1H, 3H)-2,4,6-pyrimidine trione (PB12) and 5-(4-N,N-didodecyl aminobenzylidene)-(1H,3H)-2,4,6-pyrimidine trione (AB(12)) was studied by UV-visible, fluorescence, and surface voltaic spectroscopies (SPS). The experimental results indicate that PB12 tends to form J-aggregate and AB(12) tends to form H-aggregate under increasing concentration. An intramolecular twisted charge transfer (TICT) emission around 500 nm is observed when J-aggregate is formed between PB12 molecules, and an excimer emission around 600 nm is observed when H-aggregate is formed between AB(12) molecules.

Synthesis and crystal structure of chiral bis(cyclopentadienyl) samarium Schiff base complexes bearing intramolecular C-C bond formation and hydrogen transfer

SmCl3, reacted with CpNa (Cp = Cyclopentadienyl) in the ratio of 1:3 in THF, which then was reacted with (S)-(+)-N-1-(phenylethyl) salicylideneamine/toluene to yield the title complex, [GRAPHICS] The X-ray crystal structure determination of the title complex reveals that 1 is a dimer with intramolecular C-C bond formation and hydrogen transfer, which leads to the configuration turnover of the carbon atom at the benzyl position of the ligand, while those of the newly formed asymmetric centers may have either Ii or S type configurations. Synthesis of the first mono(cyclopentadienyl)lanthanide Schiff base complex bearing C-2-symmetric tetradentate ligand: crystal structure of [(eta(5)-C5H5)Yb(mu-OC20H20N2O)](2)(mu-THF)(THF)

Reaction of YbCl3 with 3 equimolar CpNa (Cp = cyclopentadienide) in THF, followed by treatment with trans-(+/-)-N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediamine led to the isolation of first mono(cyclopentadienyl) lanthanide Schiff base complex, [(eta(5)-C5H5)Yb(mu-OC20H20N2O)](2) (mu-THF)(THF) (1). The molecular structure of 1 shows that it is a dimer in which the two [(eta(5)-C5H5)Yb(mu-OC20H20N2O)] units connecting via a bridging THF oxygen and two bridging oxygen atoms from Schiff base ligands. Synthesis and X-ray crystal structure of [(eta(5)-C5H5)Sm(mu-OC20H20N2O)](2)(mu-THF)(THF)(2): Mono(cyclopentadienyl)lanthanide complex bearing a C-2-symmetric tetradentate Schiff-base ligand

Cp2SmCl(THF) reacts with 0.5 equivalent disodium salts of trans-(+/-)-N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediamine give the title complex [(eta(5)-C5H5)Sm(mu-OC20H20N2O)](2)(mu-THF)(THF)(2) (1). X-ray crystal determination shows that the molecule is a dimer, in which two (eta(5)C(5)H(5))Sm(mu-OC20H20N2O) units are connected via a THF oxygen and two bridging oxygen atoms of Schiff base ligands. The average Sm-C distance is 2.78(7) Angstrom, while those of Sm-O (bridging THF oxygen) and Schiff base oxygens are 2.79(3) and 2.43(4) Angstrom; respectively. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Generation of chiral bis(cyclopentadienyl)neodymium Schiff base complex bearing internal C-C bond formation and hydrogen transfer

Critical surface tension of acrylamide-grafted polypropylene copolymer by the contact angle method

The contact angles theta of polar liquids on PP-g-AM copolymer (AM content 0.19, 0.26, and 0.37 wt%) were measured. The critical surface tension gamma(c) of PP-g-AM films were evaluated by the Zisman plot (cos theta versus gamma(L)), the Young-Dupre-Good-Girifalco plot (1 + cos theta) versus 1/gamma(L)(0.5), and the log(1 + cos theta) versus log gamma(L) plot. The gamma(L) values estimated by the plot log(1 + cos theta) versus log gamma(L) were smaller than those obtained by the other plots.

The synthesis of dendrimers bearing alkyl chains and their behavior at air-water interface

A new kind of amphiphilic polyether dendrimer bearing eight alkyl chains at the periphery were synthesized step by step using the convergent method. Their structures were confirmed by FT-IR spectra, H-1 NMR spectra and mass spectra etc. The pi-A isotherms, hysteresis and molecular area-time curves at air water interface were reported. These results showed that they could form stable monolayers at water surface.

The determination of ethylene-propylene copolymer-grafted-glycidyl methacrylate by the contact angle method

The contact angles theta of some liquids on ethylene-propylene copolymer-grafted-glycidyl methacrylate (EPM-g-GMA) were measured. The critical surface tensions r(c) of EPM-g-GMA were evaluated by the Zisman Plot (cos theta versus r(L)), Young-Dupre-Good-Girifalco plot (1 + cos theta versus 1/r(L)(0.5)) and log (1 + cos theta) versus log(r(L)) plot. The following results were obtained: the r(c) values varied significantly with the estimation methods. The critical surface tension r(c) decreased with the increase of the degree of grafting of EPM-g-GMA.

Small angle X-ray scattering study of structural parameters of the aggregated state in polyamide 1010+BMI

The structural parameters of the aggregated state in the polyamide PA1010 and N,N'-bismaleimide-4,4'-diphenyl methane (BMI) system were computed by means of the desmearing intensity from SAXS and using the concept of the distance distribution function. The results revealed that the parameters Q, I(0), l(c) and L decreased with the increase BMI component, whereas O-s increased. The particle dimension Z for different BMI contents was less than 13.2 nm, and the maximum value of the distance distribution function P(Z) was found to be in the range Z = 6.5-7.0 nm.
