A valence change from RE3+ to RE2+ (RE=Eu, Sm, Yb) was observed in samples of SrB4O7: RE prepared by solid state reaction at high temperature in air. The phosphors SrB4O7: RE2+ show efficient luminescence at room temperature. The broad band d-f emissions of Eu2+ and Yb2+ are at 367 and 360 nm respectively. The sharp line f-f emissions of the Sm2+ ion (5D0-F-7(J)) are in the range 680-780 nm. The probable reasons for the valence change of Eu, Sm and Yb in this host are discussed.

With the method of high temperature solid state reaction and stockbarger, we synthesized a series of powder phosphors of KMgF3-Ce3+, KMg1-alphaMalphaF3-Ce3+(M = Be2+, Ca2+) and the single crystal of KMgF3-Ce3+. We tested their excitation and emission spectra, found two emission centers in KMgF3-Ce3+ and demonstrated that they resulted from different charge compensating ways. By the structural analysis on KMgF3-Ce-3+ from a four-cycle diffractometer and spectral analysis on KMg1-alphaMalphaF3-Ce3+(M = Be2+, Ca2+), we deduced that Ce3+ ion only.substituted K+ site in KMgF3.

Dysprosium and ytterbium monophosphides have been prepared by the solid state reaction. The optical and electrical properties have been studied. Evidence that DyP and YbP are semiconductors has been obtained from the study of the absorption spectrum, the negative temperature coefficient of resistance and the rectifying effect. Their energy gaps are determined as 1.15 eV for DyP and 1.30 eV for YbP, electric conduction type is n-type, resistivities are about 10(-2) ohm cm and Hall mobility is 8.5-80 cm2/Vs. The p-n junction is formed on the LnP/Si.

The compounds, K_5LnLi_2F_(10)(Ln=La, Gd, Y) were synthesized by solid-state reaction in argon atmosphere. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns showed that K_5LnLi_2F_(10) is isostructural with K_5NdLi_2F_(10)(KNLF) except K_5YLi_2F_(10). The cell parameters and volumes of K_5LnLi_2F_(10)(Ln=La, Ce, Gd) were calculated. They decrease regularly with radii of La~(3+), Ce~(3+) and Gd~(3+). The excitation and fluorescent spactra of K_5Ce_xLn_(1-x) Li_2F_(10) were determined. It was found that the excitat...

The role of Bronsted acidity of titanium silicalite zeolite (with different ratios of Si/Ti) in oxidation reactions of styrene has been investigated and discussed. For zeolites with Si/Ti > 42, most of the titanium is in the zeolite framework. These framework titanium species, which act both as the isolated titanium centers and as Bronsted acidity centers (together with the Bronsted acidity produced by the tetrahedral aluminum impurity introduced during synthesis), can catalyze both the epoxidation and the succeeding rearrangement reactions, thus promoting the formation of phenylacetaldehyde. With an increase in the titanium content of the zeolite, titanium will tend to stay outside the zeolite lattice, except for the TiOx nanophases which can be occluded in the zeolite channels or on the external surface. These non-framework titanium species are favorable for the carbon-carbon bond scission, leading to the production of additional benzaldehyde. The catalytic performances of these zeolites with different Si/Ti ratios are correlated here with their structural information by using solid-state NMR and UV-Vis methods. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) at different potentials has been used to study the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in 3.5% NaCl solution on glassy carbon (GC) electrode in this work. Results show that ORR consists of three two-electron reaction steps and both superoxide ion (O-2(-)) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which are produced by ORR, obstruct the diffusion of oxygen to the surface of the electrode and make the EIS results change into a transmissive finite diffusion process with the real part contraction and a reflective finite diffusion process from a semi-infinite diffusion process. The values of electron transfer resistance (R-t) and diffusion resistance (R-d) were calculated from EIS. O-2(-) influenced strongly on the Rt values and induced a maximum at -0.45 V.

Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and rotating disk electrode voltammetry have been used to study the effect of chloride ions on the dissolved oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on Q235 carbon steel electrode in a 0.02 M calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)(2)) solutions imitating the liquid phase in concrete pores. The results indicate that the cathodic process on Q235 carbon steel electrode in oxygen-saturated 0.02 M Ca(OH)(2) with different concentrations of chloride ions contain three reactions except hydrogen evolution: dissolved oxygen reduction, the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II), and then the reduction of Fe(II) to Fe. The peak potential of ORR shifts to the positive direction as the chloride ion concentration increases. The oxygen molecule adsorption can be inhibited by the chloride ion adsorption, and the rate of ORR decreases as the concentration of chloride ions increases. The mechanism of ORR is changed from 2e(-) and 4e(-) reactions, occurring simultaneously, to quietly 4e(-) reaction with the increasing chloride ion concentration.
