We have investigated the effects of thermal annealing before and after cathode deposition on poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT)/[6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) blend photovoltaic cells with different cathode buffer layers. The introduction of cathode buffer layer such as lithium fluoride (LiF) and calcium oxide (CaO) in pre-annealing cells can increase the open-circuit voltage (V-oc) and the power conversion efficiency (PCE). Post thermal annealing after cathode deposition further enhanced the PCE of the cells with LiF/Al cathode.

Compatibilized blends of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) were developed using maleated PVDF (PVDF-g-MA). Excellent compatibilization between PVDF and TPU was demonstrated by theological, morphological, and mechanical measurements. The introduction of PVDF-g-MA into the PVDF/TPU blends caused an increase in viscosity and storage modulus. Much finer morphology was clearly observed by SEM. The tensile tests showed that the tensile strength and ultimate elongation achieved a significant improvement with addition of PVDF-g-MA.

Three low bandgap conjugated polymers, i.e., PDTPBT-C8, PDTPBT-C6 and PDTPBT-C5, which consist of alternating N-alkyl dithieno[3,2-b: 2',3'-d] pyrrole and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole units and carry 1-octylnonyl, 1-hexylheptyl and 1-pentylhexyl as side chains, respectively, were synthesized. These polymers show strong absorption in the wavelength range of 600-900 nm with enhanced absorption coefficient as the length of alkyl chain decreases. The film morphology of the polymers and 1-(3-methoxycarbonyl) propyl-1-phenyl-[6,6]-C-61 (PCBM) blends is also dependent on the alkyl chain length. As the length decreases, the film becomes more uniform and the domian size decreases from 400-900 nm for PDTPBT-C8 to similar to 50 nm for PDTPBT-C5.

BACKGROUND: How to promote the formation of the gamma-form in a certain propylene-ethylene copolymer (PPR) under atmospheric conditions is significant for theoretical considerations and practical applications. Taking the epitaxial relationship between the alpha-form and gamma-form into account, it is expected that incorporation of some extrinsic alpha-crystals, developed by propylene homopolymer (PPH), can enhance the crystallization of the gamma-form of the PPR component in PPR/PPH blends.RESULTS: The PPH component in the blends first crystallizes from the melt, and its melting point and crystal growth rate decrease with increasing PPR fraction. On the other hand, first-formed alpha-crystals of the PPH component can induce the lateral growth of PPR chains on themselves, indicated by sheaf-like crystal morphology and positive birefringence, which is in turn responsible for enhanced crystallization of the gamma-form of the PPR component.

The reactive compatibilization of LLDPE/PS (50/50 wt%) was achieved by Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction with a combined Lewis acids (Me3SiCl and InCl3 center dot 4H(2)O) as catalyst. The graft copolymer at the interface was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the morphology of the blends was analysized by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the combined Lewis acids had catalytic effect on Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction between LLDPE and PS, and the catalytic effect was maximal when the molar ratio of InCl3 center dot 4H(2)O to Me3SiCl was 1:5. The graft copolymer LLDPE-g-PS was formed via the F-C reaction and worked as a tailor-made compatibilizer to reduce the interfacial tension. The mechanical properties of reactive blend with combined Lewis acids as catalyst was notably improved compared to that of physical LLDPE/PS blend and serious degradation had been decreased compared to the reactive blend system with AlCl3 as catalyst; we interpreted the above results in term of acidity of combined Lewis acids.

Rhythmic growth of ring-banded spherulites in blends of liquid crystalline methoxy-poly(aryl ether ketone) (M-PAEK) and poly(aryl ether ether ketone) (PEEK) has been investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized light microscopy (PLM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The measurements reveal that the formation of the rhythmically grown ring-banded spherulites in the M-PAEK/PEEK blends is strongly dependent on the blend composition. In the M.-PAEK-rich blends, upon cooling, an unusual ring-banded spherulite is formed, which is ascribed to structural discontinuity caused by a rhythmic radial growth. For the 50:50 M-PAEK/PEEK blend, ring-banded spherulites and individual PEEK spherulites coexist in the system. In the blends with PEEK as the predominant component, M-PAEK is rejected into the boundary of PEEK spherulites. The cooling rate and crystallization temperature have great effect on the phase behavior, especially the ring-banded spherulite formation in the blends. In addition, the effects of M-PAEK phase transition rate and phase separation rate on banded spherulite formation is discussed.

A series of reactor blends of linear and branched polyethylenes have been prepared, in the presence of modified methylaluminoxane, using a combination of 2,6-bis[1(2,6-dimethyphenylimino) pyridyl]-cobalt(II) dichloride (1), known as an active catalyst for producing linear polyethylene, and [1,4-bis(2,6-diidopropylphenyl)] acenaphthene diimine nickel(II) dibromide (2), which is active for the production of branched polyethylene. The polymerizations were performed at various levels of catalyst feed ratio at 10 bar. The linear correlation between catalyst activity and concentration of catalyst 2 suggested that the catalysts performed independently from each other. The weight-average molecular weights ((M) over bar (w)), crystalline structures, and phase structures of the blends were investigated, using a combination of gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and small angle X-ray scattering techniques. It was found that the polymerization activities and MWs and crystallization rate of the polymers took decreasing tendency with the increase of the catalyst 2 ratios, while melting temperatures (T-m), crystalline temperatures (T,), and crystalline degrees took decreasing tendency. Long period was distinctly influenced by the amorphous component concentration.

A highly efficient white electroluminescent polymer with simultaneous blue, green, and red emission is reported, developed using a dopant/host strategy by covalently attaching both a green- and a red-light-emitting dopant to the side chain of a blue-light-emitting polymer host (see figure). In a single-layer device a maximum luminance efficiency of 7.3 cd A(-1) with CIE coordinates of (0.31,0.32) is achieved.

High-efficiency white electrolurninescence from a single polymer is achieved by enhancing the electroluminescence efficiency and effecting a red-shift in the emission spectrum of the blue emissive species. A single-layer device of the resultant polymer exhibits a higher luminous efficiency than the nonmodified species (12.8 cd A(-1), see figure) and an external quantum efficiency of 5.4 % with CIE coordinates of (0.31,0.36), exemplifying the success of the reported methodology.

Four single polymers with two kinds of attachment of orange chromophore to blue polymer host for white electroluminescence (EL) were designed. The effect of the side-chain attachment and main-chain attachment on the EL efficiencies of the resulting polymers was compared. The side-chain-type single polymers are found to exhibit more efficient white EL than that of the main-chain-type single polymers. Based on the side-chain-type white single polymer with 4-(4-alkyloxy-phenyl)-7-(4-diphenylamino-phenyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazoles as the orange-dopant unit and polyfluorene as the blue polymer host, white EL with simultaneous orange (lambda(max) = 545 nm) and blue emission (lambda(max) = 432 nm/460 nm) is realised. A single-layer device (indium tin oxide/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/polymer/Ca/Al) made of these polymers emits white light with the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.30,0.40), possesses a turn-on voltage of 3.5 V, luminous efficiency of 10.66 cd A(-1), power efficiency of 6.68 lm W-1, and a maximum brightness of 21240 cd m(-2).

In this paper, melt blends of poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) with poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), tensile testing, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), polarized optical microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results indicated that the glass transition temperature of PPC in the 90/10 PPC/PBS blend was decreased by about 11 K comparing with that of pure PPC. The presence of 10% PBS was partially miscible with PPC. The 90/10 PPC/PBS blend had better impact and tensile strength than those of the other PPC/PBS blends. The glass transition temperature of PPC in the 80/20, 70/30, and 60/40 PPC/PBS blends was improved by about 4.9 K, 4.2 K, and 13 K comparing with that of pure PPC, respectively; which indicated the immiscibility between PPC and PBS. The DSC results indicated that the crystallization of PBS became more difficult when the PPC content increased. The matrix of PPC hindered the crystallization process of PBS. While the content of PBS was above 20%, significant crystallization-induced phase separation was observed by polarized optical microscopy. It was found from the WAXD analysis that the crystal structure of PBS did not change, and the degree of crystallinity increased with increasing PBS content in the PPC/PBS blends.

In order to clarify the effects of phenols on properties of polyesters, the blends of poly[(3-hydroxybutyrate)-co-(3-hydroxyvalerate)] (PHBV) with 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenylpropane (BPA) and p-tert-butylphenol (TBP) were studied. The FTIR spectra revealed that there was strong hydrogen-bond (H-bond) interaction between PHBV and both phenols. By evaluating the fraction of H-bonded C = O in the blend, it was concluded that BPA showed a stronger tendency than TBP to form H-bonds with PHBV. Accordingly, BPA formed a stronger suppression than TBP on the crystallization of PHBV. When 30 wt% BPA or 50 wt% TBP were added into PHBV, the crystallization of PHBV was completely suppressed in the DSC cooling scan. As the phenol content was increased, the T-g of PHBV/TBP blend decreased while the T-g of PHBV/BPA blend increased. This difference indicated that TBP and BPA acted as plasticizer and physical crosslinking agent, respectively.

New single-polymer electroluminescent systems containing two individual emission species - polyfluorenes as a blue host and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole derivative units as an orange dopant on the main chain - have been designed and synthesized. The resulting single polymers are found to have highly efficient white electroluminescence with simultaneous blue(lambda(max) = 421 nm/445 nm) and orange emission (lambda(max) = 564 nm)from the corresponding emitting species. The influence of the photoluminescence (PL) efficiencies of both the blue and orange species on the electroluminescence (EL) efficiencies of white polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) based on the single-polymer systems has been investigated. The introduction of the highly efficient 4,7-bis(4-(N-phenyl-N-(4-methylphenyl)amino)phenyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole unit to the main chain of polyfluorene provides significant improvement in EL efficiency. For a single-layer device fabricated in air (indium tin oxide/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrene sulfonic acid/polymer/Ca/Al), pure-white electroluminescence with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.35,0.32), maximum brightness of 12 300 cd m(-2), luminance efficiency of 7.30 cd A(-1), and power efficiency of 3.34 lm W-1 can be obtained.
