Sodium ion transfer across micro-water/1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) interface facilitated by a novel ionophore, terminal-vinyl liquid crystal crown ether (LCCE) was studied by cyclic voltammetry. LCCEs have potential applications because of their physicochemical properties and the utilization of crown ethers as selective ionophoric units in other functionalized compounds are interesting. Host-guest-type behavior for such compounds in the liquid-crystalline state is studied. The experimental results suggest that the transfer of the sodium ion facilitated by LCCE was controlled by diffusion of LCCE from bulk solution of DCE to the interface. The diffusion coefficient of LCCE in DCE was calculated to be equal to (3.62 +/- 0.20) x 10(-6) cm(2)/s. Steady-state voltammograms are due to sodium ion transfer facilitated by the formation of 1: 1 metal (M)-LCCE complex at the interface and the mechanism tends to be transfer by interfacial complexation or dissociation (TIC or TID). The stability constant of the complex formed was determined to be log beta(o) = 5.5 in DCE phase. The influence of parameters such as concentration of sodium ion and concentration of LCCE on the sodium ion transfer was investigated.

The ion-molecule reactions of disubstituted benzenes under chemical ionization conditions with acetyl chloride as reagent gas were examined, and the fragmentation reactions of the adduct ions (mostly proton and acetyl ion adducts) were studied by collision-induced dissociation. Electron-releasing substituents favored the adduct reactions, and electron-withdrawing groups did not. The position and properties of substituting groups had an effect on the relative abundances of the adduct ions. Several examples of the ortho effect were observed. The fragmentation reaction of the adduct ions formed by ortho-benzenediamine with the acetyl ion was similar to the reductive alkylation reaction of amines in the condensed phase. In this work some basic constants of extractant Sec-Octylphenoxy acetic acid (CA-12) such as solubility (S) in water, dissociation constant (K-a) in aqueous solution, dimerization constant( K-2) and distribution constant (K-d) between water and haptane have been determined by two phase titration method. The results are as follows: S = 1.40 x 10(-4) mol/L, K-a = 3.02 x 10(-4), K-2 = 3.56 x 10(2), K-d = 4.06 x 10(2) (25 +/-0.5 degreesC).

In this paper, we studied the reactions of both potassium ferricyanide and hexaammineruthenium(III) chloride at a 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) in different pH solutions. The surface of the modified electrode has carboxyl groups, the dissociation of which are strongly dependent upon the solution pH values. The rate constant kb of the oxidation of ferrocyanide on the modified electrode can be obtained by fitting the experimental tip current-distance (I-T-d) curves with the theoretical values. The surface pK(a) of the 4-ABA modified GCE was estimated from the plot of standard rate constant k(o) versus the solution pH and is equal to 3.2, which is in good agreement with the reported result. The SECM approach curves for Ru(NH3)(6)(3+) both on the bare and the modified electrodes show similar diffusion control processes. These results can be explained by the electrostatic interactions between the modified electrode surface and the model compounds with different charges. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science BN. The effect of metal (Li+, Na+, K+, Ag+) cationization on collision-induced dissociation of ginsenosides was investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry combined with multi-stage mass spectrometry (ESI-MSn). The fragments of sodiated and lithiated molecules give valuable structural information regarding the nature of the aglycone and the sequence and linkage information of sugar moieties. However, the number and relative abundances of fragment ions from lithiated ginsenosides are significantly greater than for the sodiated species, The K+ adducts undergo glycosidic cleavages and very limited cross-ring reactions. The silver ion adducts fragment mainly through glycosidic cleavages. Copyright (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Electrospray ionization (ESI) combined with multiple-stage tandem mass spectrometry (MSn) was used to directly analyze the glycolipid mixture from bacteria Bacillus pumilus without preliminary separation. Full scan ESI-MS revealed the composition of picomole quantities of glycerolglycolipid species containing C-14-C-19 fatty acids, some of which were monounsaturated, Two main components were identified from their molecular masses and fragmentation pathways. The fragmentation pathway of the known compound compared with the investigated compound verified the proposed structure as 1(3)-acyl-2-pentadecanoyl-3(1)-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]-sn-glycerols. A comparison of the multiple tandem mass spectra of the different alkali-metal cation adducts indicates that the intensity of fragments and the dissociation pathways are dependent on the alkali-metal type, The basic structures of glycerolglycolipids were reflected clearly from the fragmentation patterns of the sodium cations, The intense fragments of the sugar residue from the precursor ions were obtained from the lithiated adduct ions. ESI-MSn spectra of [M + K](+) ions did not provide as much fragmentation as [M + Na](+) and [M + Li](+) adducts, but their spectra allow the position of glycerol acylation to be determined. On the basis of MS2 spectra of[M + K](+) ions, it was established that all components have a C-15:0 fatty acid at the sn-2 position of the glycerol backbone and C-14-C-19 acids at the sn-1 position of the glycerol backbone. Incubated solutions containing glutathione (GSH) and alpha- or beta-cyclodextrins (CDs) were analyzed using electrospray mass spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry, The results suggest that both CDs can catalyze oxidation of GSH to the oxidized glutathione (GSSG). The collision-induced dissociation (CID) of the 1:1 and 1:2 (CD/GSH) and 1:1 (CD/GSSG) complexes reveals the strong interactions of the CDs with the peptides tested. The 1:2 (CD/GSH) complex is considered to be the oxidation reaction intermediate, which indicates that the three-dimensional structure of the complexed two GSHs in CD complexes Is different from that of the proton-bound GSH dimer, The oxidation product, GSSG, Is also observed in the CID spectrum of the singly charged 1:1 (CD/GSH) complex, suggesting that a complex ion-complex ion reaction occurs by forming a doubly charged complex dimer, as a result of the ability of ion trap to accumulate and activate ions. The observations indicate that ion trap mass spectrometry can be used to explore cyclodextrin-catalyzed reactions and to carry out complex gaseous chemistry research. A method for the quantatitive determination of pethidine in human urine by liquid secondary ion and tandem mass spectrometry is presented. Quantification was carried out by using ketamine as internal standard. It was found that the collision-induced dissociation (CID) spectrum of the [M + H](+) ion of pethidine exhibited a prominent daughter ion at mit 220 and ketamine also yielded the same daughter ion at nit 220, For ((quadrupole)) quantitative analysis, the first quadrupole mass filter was set to transmit mit 220 and a narrow-range magnet scan yielded a spectrum of parents, including mit 238 and 248, corresponding to ketamine and pethidine, respectively. Studies of low-energy collision-induced dissociation and isotopic labeling on ionized tetrahydroimidazole-substituted methylene P-diketones by tandem mass spectrometry showed that their unimolecular fragmentations may involve the reactions of intermediate ion/neutral complexes and multistep rearrangements. The corresponding mechanisms were proved by semiemipirical calculations of PM3 and AM1 methods.

1:1 complexes of beta-cyclodextrin (CD) with three amino acids (Gly, Phe and Trp) have been detected as ions in the gas phase using infusion positive and negative ion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In contrast with the positive ion ESI mass spectra of simple aqueous solutions, the aggregates and adducts usually formed in the ESI process did not appear in the positive ion ESI spectra of solutions buffered with ammonium acetate (NH4Ac), even at higher analyte concentrations, These studies suggest that addition of buffer and/or use of a low analyte concentration should be used to overcome formation of aggregates and metal ion adducts in such mass spectrometry studies. Also, the deprotonated complexes are dissociated by collision induced dissociation (CID) to form an abundant product ion, the deprotonated CD, requiring transfer of a proton to the amino acid carboxyl group, To understand formation of complexes in the gas phase, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was used to separate free amino acids (AAs) from complexes in an incubated solution. The ESI mass spectra of the GPC fractions show the presence of 1:1 complexes of both CD-aromatic amino acids and CD-aliphatic amino acids. Compared with CD-aliphatic amino acid complexes, CD-aromatic amino acid complexes appear to be destabilized in the gas phase, possibly because the hydrophobic interaction which binds the aromatic group of amino acids in the CD cavity in solution may become repulsive when solvent evaporates from the droplets during the electrospray process, whereas those complex ions formed as proton bound dimers are stabilized by electrostatic forces, the major binding force for such complexes in the gas phase. In addition, the GPC technique coupled with off-line ESI-MS can rapidly separate CD complexes by size, and provides some information on the character of the complexes in solution. The low energy collision-induced dissociation, linked scan techniques and isotopic labeling experiment were used to investigate the unimolecular fragmentation of protonated N-hydroxyphthalimide under electron impact and chemical ionization conditions. It was found that this compound shows an unusual reactivity towards protonation. Two possible sites of protonation have been proposed to explain the corresponding fragmentation processes, one is that the protonation takes place on the oxygen atom of hydroxyl group, resulting in the loss of water and the other is the formation of an intermediary proton-bound complex in the fragmentation process, giving rise to the fragment ions of m/z 133 and m/z 135. The results show both cases are coexistence in the fragmentations of protonated N-hydroxyphthalimide, and the unimolecular fragmentation pathways are available.
