Plant extracellular calmodulin (CaM) has been purified from cauliflower and identified with NAD kinase(NADK) activation and inhibition effect of CaM antagonist W7, Tb-3.1 fluorescence titration showed that extracellular CaM contained four metal-binding sites, The excitation spectrum and emission specturm indicated that extracellular CaM contained one tyrosine residue which could transfer energy to bound Tb3+. Based on Forster type nonradiative energy transfer theory, the distances of Tyr-->sites III, IV have been determined, these are 1. 104 nm(Tyr --> III, site) and 1. 056 nm(Tyr --> N, site). By studing the effect of CaM antagonist W7 and CaM antibody on Tb3+-sensitized fluorescence, it was found that the binding sites of W7 and antibody were located on the c-terminal part of plant extracellular CaM which contains domain III and domain IV.

Communication: Nanostructural hybrid organic-inorganic lanthanide complex films were prepared in situ by use of a novel sol-gel precursor containing pendant triethoxy-silyl and carboxyl groups (see Figure). The resulting transparent and crack-free films gave rise to strong red or green emission, even at low lanthanide ion concentration. Phase separation and lanthanide ion aggregation were controlled at the nanoscale.

This overview presents the recent progress in the area of endohedral metallofullerenes in the past several years. The important results have been summarized as follows: (1) Many metals including Group 3 metals, most of the lanthanide series elements, and Group 2 metals have been encapsulated into a fullerene cage to form mono-, di-, and trimetallofullerenes by using the arc-evaporation technique. (2) Some endohedral metallofullerenes such as Group 3 metals, most of the lanthanide series elements, Group 2 metals, and some of their isomers have been successfully isolated and purified by a two-step or several-step HPLC technique. By using high-temperature and high-pressure extraction with pyridine, Ln@C-80, Ln@C-82, and Ln2@C-80 for most rare-earth metals have been selectively extracted in high yield (about 1% of the saw soot) from fullerenes and other size metallofullerenes. (3) The endohedral nature of metallofullerenes such as Y@C-82, Sc2@C-84, and Sc@C-82 has been finally confirmed by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. The symmetries and the structures of metallofullerenes such as Ca@C-82(III), La-2@C-80(I-h), Sc-2@C-84(D-2d), and Sc-2@C-84(C-s) have been confirmed by NMR measurements. (Lb) The information on the electronic structures and properties of endohedral metallofullerenes has been obtained by various spectrometric means Such as EPR, W-vis-MR, XPS, CV. It is generally accepted that three-electron transfer is favorable when M = Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Lu but Sc, Eu, Sm, Yb, Tm, Ca, Sr, Ba prefer to donate two electrons to the fullerene cages. (5) Several chemical reactions of endohedral metallofullerenes have been reported in which reagents are disilacyclopropane, digermacyclopropane, diphenyldiazomethane, and trifluoroacetic acid. (6) Mass spectrometry provided the crucial evidence that led to the discovery of metallofullerenes in 1985 and has always played a key role in their identification and characterization, Ion-mobility measurements of gas-phase ions have obtained the information of structures and the formation mechanism of endohedral metallofullerenes. till Theoretical calculations on the endohedral metallofullerenes have made an important contribution to the studies on the symmetry of the cage, the position of metal atom(s) inside the cage, the number of electronic transfer between metal atom(s) and fullerene cage, etc. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. Reaction of thiamine or thiamine monophosphate (TMP) with K2Pt(NO2)(4) afforded a metal complex, Pt(thiamine)(NO2)(3) (1), and two salt-type compounds, (H-thiamine)[Pt(NO2)(4)]. 2H(2)O (2) and (TMP)(2)[Pt(NO2)(4)]. 2H(2)O (3), which were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. In 1, the square-planar Pt2+ ion is coordinated to the pyrimidine N(1'), a usual metal-binding site, and three NO2- groups. The thiamine molecule exists as a monovalent cation in 1 and a divalent cation in 2 while the TMP molecule is a monovalent cation in 3. In each compound, thiamine or TMP adopts the usual F conformation and forms two types of host-guest-like interactions with anions, which are of the bridging forms, C(2)-H . . . anion . . . pyrimidine-ring and N(4'1)-H(...)anion(...)thiazolium-ring. In 3, there is an additional anion-bridging interaction between the pyrimidine and thiazolium rings of TMP, being of the form C(6')-H . . . anion . . . thiazolium-ring. The salts 2 and 3 show similar hydrogen-bonded cyclic dimers of thiamine or TMP between which the anions are held. Results are compared with those of the other thiamine-platinum complexes. A four-level decay model in KMgF3:Eu2+ is proposed. The decay profiles of the P-6(7/2) excited state of Eu2+ are biexponential, and the physical implication of each term in the fit equation responsible for the model is interpreted. The evidence obtained spectroscopically for supporting the model is presented. A new method to study energy transfer between Eu2+ and X3+ in KMgF3:Eu-X (X = Gd, Ce, Cr) is established on the basis of the proposed model.

The solution structures of diamagnetic lanthanide (III) complexes of DTPA-BIN (Ln = La, Y, Lu, Sc) have been investigated by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and 2D NMR. For each complex, two or more species of asymmetric conformations with little distinction were identified at room temperature. And their solution structures vary with the radius of the central metals. NMR spectra support the hypothesis that Sc3+ with smaller radius formed an eight-coordinated structure with DTPA-BIN, La3+ with larger radius formed nine- or ten-coordinated structures with DTPA-BIN, and Y (DTPA-BIN) and Lu (DTPA-BIN) had nine-coordinated solution structures. The solution structure of Gd (DTPA-BIN) was obtained from the similarity of radius between Gd3+ and Y3+, which is a nine-coordinated structure formed by three nitrogens, three acetate oxygens, two acetyl oxygens, one water molecule and a gadolinium(III) cation.

A highly alternative copolymer of carbon dioxide and propylene oxide was obtained using a lanthanide trichloroacetates-based ternary catalyst. The rare-earth compound in the ternary catalyst was critical to dramatically raise the yield and molecular weight of the copolymer in addition to maintaining a high alternating ratio of the copolymer. Reaction of NdCl3, with AlCl3 and mesitylene in benzene gives complex [Nd(eta (6)-1,3,5-C6H3Me3) (AlCl4)(3)] (C6H6) (1) which was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, MS and X-lay diffractions. The X-ray determination indicates that 1 has a distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry and crystallizes in the monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n with a = 0.9586(2), b = 1.1717(5), c = 2.8966(7) nm, beta = 90.85 (2)degrees, V = 3.2529(6) nm(3), D-c = 1.573 g/cm(3), Z = 4. A comparison of bond parameters for all the reported Ln(eta (6)-Ar) (AlCl4)(3) complexes indicates that the bond distance of Ln-C is shortened with the increasing of methyl group on benzene and with the decreasing of radius of lanthanide ions.

Five Ln(2)SrMCuO(6.5) oxides (M = Co, Ln = Y and Ho; M = Fe, Ln = Y, Ho, and Dy) were synthesized, and their crystal structures, IR spectra, and physical properties were studied. They have almost the same structure and crystallize in orthorhombic systems. Below room temperature, Y2SrFeCuO6.5, a known layered oxide, shows antiferromagnetic behavior, but the four new oxides are paramagnetic. Y2SrFeCuO6.5 fits the Curie-Weiss law in the temperature range 300-100 K, but Y2SrCoCuO6.5 shows complex magnetic behavior because of the disproportion of some Co+3 to Co+2 and Co+4 The five oxides are all p-type semiconductors in the measured temperature range and have large electrical resistivities at room temperature.

The luminescence of Ce3+ and Ce3+, Mn2+ co-doped BaB8O13 and SrB4O7 prepared in air is studied. The results show that tetravalent cerium ion can he reduced to trivalent state in the hosts and gives rise to efficient luminescence. Energy transfer between Ce3+ and Mn2+ is possible. Mn2+ ions can be efficiently sensitized by Ce3+ and exhibit green and red emissions which implied that Mn2+ occupied the crystallographic sites of cations and boron sites of the anoins, respectively. The intensity ratio of red to Been emission in matrix increases with the increasing of manganese concentration.

The valence change of samarium from trivalent to divalent state in strontium berates (SrB6O10) prepared in air was observed. The high resolution spectra of Sm2+ in matrix were studied between 10 K and 300 K. The results showed that three crystallographic sites for Sm2+ were available in the host. Energy transfer among these sites was possible. The vibronic transition of D-5(0) --> F-7(0) of Sm2+ was studied at room temperature and the Huang-Rhys factor S was calculated. Due to the thermal population, D-5(1) --> F-7(0) transition at room temperature was observed.

The cleavage of adenosine-5'-monophosphate (5'-AMP) and guanosine-5'-monophosphate (S-GMP) by Ce4+ and lanthanide complex of 2-carboxyethylgermanium sesquioxide (Ge-132) in acidic and near neutral conditions was investigated by NMR, HPLC and measuring the liberated inorganic phosphate at 37 degrees C and 50 degrees C, The results showed that 5'-GMP and 5'-AMP was converted to guanine (G), 5'-monophosphate (depurination of 5'-GMP), ribose (depurination and dephosphorylation of 5'-GMP), phosphate and adenine (A), 5'-monophosphate (depurination of 5'-AMP), ribose (depurination and dephosphorylation of 5'-AMP), phosphate respectively by Ce4+. In presence of lanthanide complexes, 5'-GMP and 5'-AMP were converted to guanosine (Guo) and phosphate and adenosine (Ado) and phosphate respectively. The mechanism of cleaving 5'-GMP and 5'-AMP is hydrolytic scission.
