The structure and stability of magnesia-supported copper salts of molybdovanadophosphoric acid (Cu2PMo11VO40) were characterized by different techniques. The catalyst was prepared in ethanol by impregnation because this solvent does not hurt texture of the water-sensitive MgO and Cu2PMo11VO40. The Keggin-type structure compound may be degraded partially to form oligomerized polyoxometalate when supported on MgO. However, the oligomers can rebuild as the Keggin structure again after thermal treatment in air or during the reaction. Meanwhile, the V atoms migrate out of the Keggin structure to form a lacunary structure, as observed by Fourier transform IR spectroscopy. Moreover, the presence of Cu2+ as a countercation showed an affirmative influence on the migration of V atoms, and the active sites derived from the lacunary species generated after release of V from the Keggin anion. The electron paramagnetic resonance data imply that V5+ autoreduces to V4+ in the fresh catalyst, and during the catalytic reaction a large number of V4+ ions are produced, which enhance the formation of O2- vacancies around the metal atoms. These oxygen vacancies may also improve the reoxidation function of the catalyst. This behavior is correlated to higher catalytic properties of this catalyst. The oxidative dehydrogenation of hexanol to hexanal was studied over this catalyst.

4-Aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) was covalently grafted on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by amine cation radical formation during the electrooxidation process in 0.1 M KCl aqueous Solution. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement proves the presence of 4-carboxylphenylamine on the GCE. Electron transfer processes of Fe(CN)(6)(3-) in solutions of various pHs at the modified electrode are studied by both cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Changing the solution pH would result in the variation of the terminal group's charge state, based on which the surface pK(a) values were estimated. The copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) multilayer films were formed on 4-ABA/GCE prepared in aqueous solution, and which exhibit good electrochemical behavior with high stability.

alpha(1)-VOPO4, alpha(II)-VOPO4 and beta-VOPO4 have been investigated as catalysts for the gas phase oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of cyclohexane to cyclohexene with the addition of acetic acid (HOAc) in the feeds in a fixed bed reactor. Different VOPO4 phases showed different acidity and reducibility. beta-VOPO4 phase is more active than alpha(I)-VOPO4 and alpha(II)-VOPO4 in the ODH without acetic acid addition. In the presence of acetic acid, the acidity of the catalyst may play an important role in the ODH process. Due to higher acidity, alpha(I)-VOPO4 phase catalyst gives better catalytic performances than alpha(I)-VOPO4 and beta-VOPO4 for the ODH of cyclohexane by adding of acetic acid in the reactants.

To evaluate the interactions between the atoms of An, Ag and Cu and clean Si(111) surface, two types of silicon clusters Si4H7 and Si16H20 together with their metal complexes were studied by using hybrid (U)B3LYP density functional theory method. Optimized geometries and energies on different adsorption sites indicate that: (1) the binding energies at different adsorption sites are large (ranging from similar to 1.2 to 2.6 eV depend on the metal atoms and adsorption sites), suggesting a strong interaction between metal atom and silicon surface; (2) the most favorable adsorption site is the on top (T) site. Mulliken population analysis indicated that in the system of on top (T) site, a covalent bond is formed between metal atom and dangling bond of surface Si atom. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Enhancement of the catalytic performance of supported-metal catalysts by pretreatment of the support

We report an interesting finding that the catalytic performance of supported Ag/SiO2 catalysts toward selective catalytic oxidation of CO in hydrogen at low temperatures can be greatly enhanced by pretreatment of the SiO2 support before catalyst preparation. Calcination of SiO2 at appropriate temperatures preferentially removes the H-bonded SiOH, which results in the highly dispersive Ag/SiO2 catalyst and thus improves the catalytic performance. In this work, we reported both unlabeled and labeled sensing strategies for Ag(I) ions detection by using the DNA based gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) colorimetric method. In the unlabeled strategy, C-base riched single strand DNA (C-ssDNA) enwinded onto AuNPs to form AuNPs/C-ssDNA complex. In the labeled method, sulfhydryl group modified C-ssDNA (HS-C-ssDNA) was covalently labeled on AuNPs to produce AuNPs-S-C-ssDNA complex. In both strategies, C-ss DNA or HS-C-ssDNA could enhance the AuNPs stability against the salt-induced aggregation. However, the presence of Ag(I) ions in the obtained AuNPs/C-ssDNA or AuNPs-S-C-ssDNA complex would decrease such stability to display purple even blue colors due to the formation of Ag(I) ions mediated C-Ag(I)-C base pairs. Through this phenomenon, Ag(I) ions could be detected qualitatively and quantitatively using both unlabeled and labeled sensing strategies.

This report describes the preparation of Pt-nanoparticle-coated gold-nanoporous film (PGNF) on a gold substrate via a simple "green" approach. The gold electrode that has been anodized under a high potential of 5 V is reduced by freshly prepared ascorbic acid (AA) solution to obtain gold nanoporous film electrode. Then the Pt nanoparticle is grown on the electrode by cyclic voltammetry (CV).

A novel glucose biosensor based on immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOD) in thin films of polyethylenimine-functionalized ionic liquid (PFIL), containing a mixture of carbon nanotubes (CNT) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and deposited on glassy carbon electrodes, was developed. Direct electrochemistry of glucose oxidase in the film was observed, with linear glucose response up to 12 mM. The PFIL-stabilized gold nanoparticles had a diameter of 2.4 +/- 0.8 nm and exhibited favorable stability (stored even over one month with invisible change in UV-vis spectroscopic measurements).

This paper reports a versatile seed-mediated growth method for selectively synthesizing single-crystalline rhombic dodecahedral, octahedral, and cubic gold nanocrystals. In the seed-mediated growth method, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and CPC-capped single-crystalline gold nanocrystals 41.3 nm in size are used as the surfactant and seeds, respectively. The CPC-capped gold seeds can avoid twinning during the growth process, which enables us to study the correlations between the growth conditions and the shapes of the gold nanocrystals. Surface-energy and kinetic considerations are taken into account to understand the formation mechanisms of the single-crystalline gold nanocrystals with varying shapes.

Gold nanoparticles stabilized by amino-terminated ionic liquid (Au-IL) have been in situ noncovalently deposited on poly(sodium 4-styrene-sulfonate) (PSS)-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to form a MWCNTs/PSS/Au-IL nanocomposite. PSS can interact with MWCNTs through hydrophobic interaction. Amino-terminated ionic liquid was applied to reduce aqueous HAuCl4, and the resulting gold nanoparticles were attached to the PSS-functionalized MWCNTs simultaneously. Most gold nanoparticles dispersed well on the functionalized MWCNTs. Transmission electron microscopy, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to confirm the composition and structure of the nanocomposites. The resulting MWCNTs/PSS/Au-IL composite exhibits good electrocatalysis toward oxygen and hydrogen peroxide reduction.

In this work,we report the application of novel, water-soluble fluorescent Ag clusters in fluorescent sensors for detecting cysteine, an important biological analyte. The fluorescence of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA)templated Ag clusters was found to be quenched effectively by cysteine, but not when the other alpha-amino acids were present. By virtue of the specific response, a new, simple, and sensitive fluorescent method for detecting cysteine has been developed based on Ag clusters. The present assay allows for the selective determination of cysteine in the range of 2.5 x 10(-8) to 6.0 x 10(-6) M with a detection limit of 20 nM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. Based on the absorption and fluorescence studies, we suggested that cysteine quenched the emission by the thiol-adsorption-accelerated oxidation of the emissive Ag clusters. The present study shows a promising step toward the application of silver clusters, a new class of attractive fluorescence probes.

We report a new fluorescent detection method for cysteine based on one-step prepared fluorescent conjugated polymer-stabilized gold nanoparticles. The as-prepared fluorescent conjugated polymer-stabilized gold nanoparticles fluoresce weakly due to the fluorescence resonance energy transfer between the fluorophore and the gold nanoparticles. Upon the addition of cysteine, a thiol-containing amino acid, the fluorescence of the colloidal solution increases significantly, indicating that cysteine can modulate the energy transfer between fluorophore and gold. This phenomenon then allows for sensitive detection of cysteine with a limit of detection (LOD) of 25 nM. The linear range of determination of cysteine is from 5 x 10(-8) to 4 x 10(-6) M. None of the other amino acids found in proteins interferes with the determination. Moreover, due to the excellent protecting ability of the fluorescent conjugated polymers, the synthesis of metal nanoparticles and modifying with fluorophores can be accomplished within one step, which makes our method much simpler than conventional methods. We also expect that it will be possible to detect other biologically important analytes based on the fluorescent conjugated polymer-stabilized metal nanoparticles.
