(Y, Gd) BO3:Eu3+ particles coated with nano-hematite were prepared by a facile method I for example (humid) solid phase reaction at room temperature. The resulted hematite-coated (Y, Gd)BO3:Eu3+ particles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), and photoluminescence spectra (PL). The SEM and EDS analyses indicate that the particles are coated with a very thin layer of iron oxide. XPS results further confirmed that the coating was hematite, and the coating thickness was in nanometer range. XRD patterns showed that either the hematite coating was too thin or the content of hematite was too small, so that the XRD cannot detect it. The emission spectra illustrate that the peak near 580 nm disappears due to the coating of iron oxide, and when the coating is very thin, the ratio of D-5(0)-> F-7(2) to D-5(2)-> F-7(1) of coated particles is higher than that of uncoated ones, which indicates that the color purity of the phosphor is increased by coating nano-hematite.

Natural bone is one kind of compounds consisting of hydroxyapatite (HAp) nano-rods, which are embedded in the template of collagen matrix in vivo with the same crystallographic organization. Herein HAp nano-rods precursors were synthesized via wet chemical method. Large-scale HAp nano-wires with the same crystallographic organization as the template of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) were obtained by the electrophoretic deposition and the technology of the template. It provides a meaningful method to study and understand the information of biological molecules' mineralization process.

Facilitated alkali metal ion (M+= Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+) transfers across the micro- and nano-water/1,2-dichloroethane (W/DCE) interfaces supported at the tips of micro- and nanopipets by dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) have been investigated systematically using cyclic voltammetry. The theory developed by Matsuda et al. was applied to estimate the association constants of DB18C6 and M+ in the DCE phase based on the experimental voltammetric results. The kinetic measurements for alkali metal ion transfer across the W/DCE interface facilitated by DB18C6 were conducted using nanopipets or-submicropipets, and the standard rate constants (k(0)) were evaluated by analysis of the experimental voltammetric data. They increase in the following order: k(Cs+)(0) < k(Li+)(0) < k(Rb+)(0) < k(Na+)(0) < k(K+)(0), which is in accordance with their association constants except Cs+ and Li+.

Microporous silica gel has been prepared by the sol-gel method utilizing the hydrolysis and polycondensation of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS). The gel has been doped with the luminescent ternary europium complex Eu(TTA)(3)(.)phen: where HTTA=1-(2-thenoyl)-3,3,3-trifluoracetone and phen=1,10-phenanthroline. By contrast to the weak f-f electron absorption bands of Eu3+, the complex organic ligand exhibits intense near ultraviolet absorption. Energy transfer from the ligand to Eu3+ enables the production of efficient, sharp visible luminescence from this material. Utilizing the polymerization of methyl methacrylate, the inorganic/polymer hybrid material containing Eu(TTA)(3)(.)phen has also been obtained. SEM micrographs show uniformly dispersed particles in the nanometre range. The characteristic luminescence spectral features of europium ions are present in the emission spectra of the hybrid material doped with Eu(TTA)(3)(.)phen.

When the aggregation of C-60 is arranged in mono-dispersed state on the ITO substrate, the photoluminescence (PL) spectra are observed clearly. These emission peaks are attributed to recombination of self - trapped excitons, the zero-phonon exciton (R-0) and its phonon replicas.

Facilitated proton transfer across the water/1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) interface supported on the tips of micro- and nano-pipets by o-phenanthroline (Phen) was studied by using cyclic voltammetry. The formed micro- and nano-liquid/liquid interfaces functioned as micro- and nano-electrodes under certain experimental conditions. The dependence of the half-wave potentials on the aqueous solutions acidities was studied and the ratio of association constants between Phen and proton in the aqueous and DCE phases was calculated by the method proposed by Matsuda et al.. The standard rate constant (k(0)) and the transfer coefficient (alpha) evaluated by using nano-pipets were equal to 0.183 +/- 0.054 cm/s and 0.70 +/- 0.09, respectively.

The inorganic/polymer hybrid films with good luminescent properties have been obtained by the sol - gel process via incorporating the polymer component doped with rare earth complexes. These films exhibit good toughness and transparency. Their fluorescence spectra and lifetimes indicate that they all have the characteristic luminescence of the central rare earth ions. The lifetimes of these films are longer than those of pure complexes. TEM have showed that the rare earth complexes are dispersed homogeneously in SiO2/PVB interpenetratiny networks, and the dispersed size is between 20 and 30 nn.

The volumetric behavior of a chloride complex of palladium was studied at a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The Pd-IV complex existing on the GCE surface was found, which was proposed to form an octahedral surface complex through coordination to the oxygen atom of an oxygen functional group on the pretreated GCE surface. The ferri/ferrocyanide redox couple was used as a probe to examine the activity of the GCE. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy provided the evidence of the surface complex existing on the GCE. Highly dispersed Pd particles can be obtained when the surface complexes were reduced electrochemically to Pd atoms. The Pd particles obtained in this way were in nanometer scale and exhibit high catalytic activity towards the oxidation of hydrazine. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

CeO2 nanometer powders of different sizes were prepared at low temperature by pyrolysis of amorphous citrate. XRD patterns show that CeO2 is cubic in structure, space group O-h(5)-F-M3M. TEM indicates that the prepared CeO2 is spherical in shape, and the particle size distribution is in narrow range. It was found that calcination temperature is a more important factor affecting the crystallite size of CeO2 than calcining time, the smaller the particle, the bigger the crystal lattice distortion, the worse the crystal growth. Solubility test of CeO2 in nitric acid reveals that the surface activity of CeO2 decreases with the increasing particle sizes. IR spectra analysis shows that the absorption of Ce-O bond is shifted to higher energy with the decrease of CeO2 particle sizes.

A series of rare earth hydroxides and oxides ultrafine powders have been prepared by precipitation method using alcohol as dispersive and protective reagent. It was first to find that the crystallite size of cubic rare earth oxides had Lanthanide shrinking effect, but average crystal lattice distortion rate possessed lanthanide swelling effect;the change of diffraction intensity with atomic number presented an inverted W type, and double peaks structure was formed.

CoWO4 nano-particles were successfully synthesized at a low temperature of 270 degrees C by a molten salt method, and effects of such processing parameters as holding time and salt quantity on the crystallization and development Of CoWO4 crystallites were initially studied. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). and photoluminescent spectra techniques (PL), respectively. Experimental results showed that the well-crystallized CoWO4 nano-particles with ca. 45 nm in diameter could be obtained at 270 degrees C for a holding time of 8 h with 6:1 mass ratio of the salt to CoWO4 precursor, and XRD analysis evidenced that the as-prepared sample was a pure monoclinic phase Of CoWO4 with wolframite structure. Their PL spectra revealed that the CoWO4 nano-particles displayed a very strong PL peak at 453 nm with the excitation wavelength of 230 nm, and PL properties of CoWO4 crystallites relied on their crystalline state, especially on their particle size. Hot dip Zn-Al alloy coating performs better than hot dip galvanized coating and 55% Al-Zn-Si coating as well with regard to general seawater corrosion protection. A characterization of the corrosion products on Zn-Al alloy coating immersed in dynamic aerated seawater has been performed mainly based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for morphological analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique for crystalline phase identification. The XRD and TEM analyses showed that the corrosion products mainly were typical nanometer Zn4CO3(OH)(6).H2O, Zn-5(OH)(8)Cl-2 and Zn6Al2CO3(OH)(16). 4H(2)O microcrystals. This probably is connected to the co-precipitation of Zn2+ and Al3+ ions caused by adsorption. Zn-Al alloy coating being suffered seawater attacks, AI(OH)(3) gel was first produced on the coating surface. Zn and Al hydroxides would co-precipitate and form double-hydroxide when the concentration of adsorbed Zn2+ ions by the newly produced gel exceeded the critical degree of supersaturation of the interphase nucleation. However, because the growth of the crystals was too low to keep in step with the nucleation, a layer of nano-crystalline corrosion products were produced on the surface of the coating finally.
