Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has been irradiated (0-40 Mrad) with a Co-60 source at room temperature under vacuum. The crystallinity has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The mechanical properties have been determined at room temperature. A significant increase of heat of fusion can be seen at low irradiation doses, which is attributed to crystallization, caused by chain scission during the process of irradiation. It is also observed that the thickness of the lamellae changes with irradiation dose. The Young's modulus has been improved significantly after irradiation at low doses. The melting behavior of drawn, compression-molded isotactic polypropylene has been examined in terms of the influence of drawing conditions on the observed properties. Two endothermic peaks were observed on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for samples when high draw ratios and high heating rates were used during DSC tests. The peak at lower temperature is influenced by draw ratio, temperature, and rate, and exhibits a strong superheating effect. The species associated with this peak can partially recrystallize into another species associated with the peak at higher temperature during DSC measurements. The position of the peak at higher temperature depends only on draw ratio. It is proposed that the double-melting peaks at lower and higher temperature result from extremely thin quasi-amorphous or crystalline layers between microfibrils and the lamellar crystals within microfibrils, respectively. This paper studies gamma-radiation induced lamellar damage mechanism of poly(vinylidene fluoride), using wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and gel fraction determination. We believe that it is ''lamellae core damage'' rather than ''lamellae surface damage'' that results in the decrease of the crystallinity.

The structure of quenched isotactic polypropylene (iPP) films, including samples etched with fuming nitric acid (FNA), has been studied by infrared (IR) spectra, wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD), small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. The changes of IR, SAXS, DSC, and WAXD results induced by annealing for etched samples have been compared with those for unetched ones. The IR absorbance spectrum of the quenched iPP etched by FNA did not change. In addition, the SAXS intensity did not increase when these samples were annealed, indicating that the total (IR) crystallinity (i.e., the content of chain segments in the helical conformations) of the etched samples does not increase. However, WAXD patterns of the samples changed in a manner similar to those of the unetched one, from the original two blurred diffraction peaks to the sharp crystal patterns of alpha-form iPP, suggesting that the mesomorphic (or liquid crystal-like) phase has reorganized to alpha-form crystals. It is concluded that the change of WAXD of quenched iPP films during annealing results mainly from transformation of order in the mesomorphic phase, rather than only from an increase of crystal size. In other words, mesomorphic-form iPP is not constituted by any known crystals (such as alpha or beta crystals) in small sizes; its WAXD pattern reflects truly the degree of order in the mesomorphic phase.

Blends of poly[3,3-bis(chloromethyl)oxetane] (Penton) with poly(vinyl acetate) were prepared. Compatibility, morphology, thermal behavior, and mechanical properties of blends with various compositions were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical measurements (DMA), tensile tests, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). DMA study showed that the blends have two glass transition temperatures (T(g)). The T(g) of the PVAc rich phase shifts significantly to lower temperatures with increasing Penton content, suggesting that a considerable amount of Penton dissolves in the PVAc rich phase, but that the Penton rich phase contains little PVAc. The Penton/PVAc blends are partially compatible. DSC results suggest that PVAc can act as a beta-nucleator for Penton in the blend. Marked negative deviations from simple additivity were observed for the tensile strength at break over the entire composition range. The Young's modulus curve appeared to be S-shaped, implying that the blends are heterogeneous and have a two-phase structure. This was confirmed by SEM observations.

Molar heat capacities of ibuprofen were precisely measured with a small sample precision automated adiabatic calorimeter over the temperature range from 80 to 400 K. The polynomial functions of C-p,C-m (J K-1 mol(-1)) versus T were established on the heat capacity measurements by means of the least fitting square method. The functions are as follows: for solid ibuprofen, at the temperature range of 79.105 K less than or equal to T less than or equal to 333.297 K, C-p,C-m = 144.27 + 77.046X + 3.5171X(2) + 10.925X(3) + 11.224X(4), where X = (T - 206.201)/127.096; for liquid ibuprofen, at the temperature range of 353.406 K less than or equal to T less than or equal to 378.785 K, C-p,C-m = 325.79 + 8.9696X - 1.6073X(2) - 1.5145 X-3, where X = (T - 366.095)/12.690. A fusion transition at T = 348.02 K was found from the C-p-T curve. The molar enthalpy and entropy of the fusion transition were determined to be 26.65 kJ mol(-1) and 76.58 J mol(-1) K-1, respectively. The thermodynamic functions on the base of the reference temperature of 298.15 K, (H-T - H-298.15) and (S-T - S-298.15), were derived. Thermal characteristic of ibuprofen was studied by thermo-gravimetric analysis (TG-DTG) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The temperature of fusion, the molar enthalpy and entropy of fusion obtained by DSC were well consistent with those obtained by adiabatic calorimeter. The evaporation process of ibuprofen was investigated further by TG and DTG, and the activation energy of the evaporation process was determined to be 80.3 +/- 1.4 kJ mol(-1). (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. The curing reaction process of epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK) with 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) and hexahydrophthalic acid anhydride (Nadic) as curing agents was investigated using isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (IDSC) and nonisothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DDSC) techniques. It was found that the curing reactions of E-PEK/DDS and E-PEK/Nadic are nth-order reactions but not autoaccelerating. The experimental results revealed that the curing reaction kinetics parameters measured from IDSC and DDSC are not equivalent. This means that, in the curing reaction kinetics model for our E-PEK system, both isothermal and nonisothermal reaction kinetics parameters are needed to describe isothermal and nonisothermal curing processes, The isothermal and nonisothermal curing processes were successfully simulated using this model. A new extrapolation method was suggested. On the basis of this method the maximum extent of the curing reaction (A(ult)) that is able to reach a certain temperature can be predicted. The A(ult) for the E-PEK system estimated by the new method agrees well with the results obtained from another procedure reported in the literature. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

In this paper, torsion fracture behavior of drawn pearlitic steel wires with different heat treatments was investigated. Samples with different heat treatments was investigated. Samples with different heat treatment conditions were subjected to torsion and tensile tests. The shear strain along the torsion sample after fracture was measured. Fracture surface of wires was examined by Scanning Electron Microscopy. In addition, the method of Differential Scanning Calorimetry was used to characterize the thermodynamic process in the heat treatment. A numerical simulation via finite element method on temperature field evolution for the wire during heat treatment process was performed. The results show that both strain aging and recovery process occur in the material within the temperature range between room temperature and 435 degrees C. It was shown that the ductility measured by the number of twists drops at short heating times and recovers after further heating in the lead bath of 435 degrees C. On the other hand, the strenght of the wire increases at short heating times and decreases after further heating. The microstructure inhomogeneity due to short period of heat treatment, coupled with the gradient characteristics of shear deformation during torsion results in localized shear deformation of the wire. In this situation, shear cracks nucleate between lamella and the wire breaks with low number of twists.

Structural relaxation by isothermal annealing below the glass transition temperature is conducted on a Zr64.13Cu15.75Ni10.12Al10 bulk metallic glass. The effect of structural relaxation on thermal and mechanical properties was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and instrumented nanoindentation. The recovery of the enthalpy in the DSC curves indicates that thermally unstable defects were annihilated through structural relaxation. During nanoindentation, the structural relaxation did not have a significant influence on the serrated plastic flow behavior. However, Structural relaxation shows an obvious effect in increasing both the hardness and elastic modulus, which is attributed to the annihilation of thermally unstable defects that resulted from the relaxation.

The molar heat capacities of the two biphenyl liquid crystals, 3BmFF and 3BmFFXF3, with a purity of 99.7 mol% have been precisely measured by a fully automated precision adiabatic calorimeter in the temperature range between T = 80 and 350 K. Nematic phase-liquid phase transitions were found between T = 297 K and 300 K with a peak temperature of T-peak = (298.071 +/- 0.089) K for 3BmFF, and between T = 316 and 319 K with a peak temperature of T-peak = (315.543 +/- 0.043) K for 3BmFFXF3. The molar enthalpy (Delta(trs)H(m)) and entropy (Delta(trs)S(m)) corresponding to these phase transitions have been determined by means of the analysis of the heat capacity curves, which are (15.261 +/- 0.023) U mol(-1) and (51.202 +/- 0.076) J K-1 mol(-1) for 3BmFF, (31.624 +/- 0.066) kJ mol(-1) and (100.249 +/- 0.212) J K-1 mol(-1) for 3BmFFXF3, respectively. The real melting points (TI) and the ideal melting points (TO) with no impurities of the two compounds have been obtained from the fractional melting method to be (298.056 +/- 0.018) K and (298.165 +/- 0.038) K for 3BmFF, (315.585 +/- 0.043) K and (315.661 +/- 0.044) K for 3BmFFXF3, respectively. In addition, the transitions of these two biphenyl liquid crystals from nematic phase to liquid phase have further been investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) technique; the repeatability and reliability for these phase transitions were verified. Nearly monodisperse and well-defined one-dimensional (1D) Gd2O3:Eu3+ nanorods and microrods were successfully prepared through a large-scale and facile hydrothermal method followed by a subsequent heat treatment process, without using any catalyst or template. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra as well as kinetic decays were used to characterize the samples. The size of the Gd2O3:Eu3+ rods could be modulated from micro- to nanoscale with the increase of pH value using ammonia solution. The as-formed product via the hydrothermal process, Gd(OH)(3):Eu3+, could transform to cubic Gd2O3:Eu3+ with the same morphology and a slight shrinking in size after a postannealing process.
