A novel poly-l-arginine microcapsule was prepared due to its nutritional function and pharmacological efficacy. A high-voltage electrostatic droplet generator was used to make uniform microcapsules. The results show that the membrane strength and permeating property are both remarkably affected with the changes of sodium alginate concentration. With the sodium alginate concentration increasing, gel beads sizes increase from 233 mum to 350 mum, release ratio is also higher at the same time, but the membrane strength decreases.

The power-time curves of growth of three strains of petroleum bacteria at different NaCl concentrations at 40.0 and 50.0 degreesC have been determined by using a 2277 Thermometric Thermal Activity Analyser. An equation of a power-time curve, ln[alphaP(K)/P(t) - 1] = ln[(alphaK - N-0)/N-0] - alphakt, was established based on the generalized logistic equation, where P(t) is the thermal power at time t, K the carrying capacity, P-K = P0K, P-0 the thermal power of one cell, N-0 the bacterial population at time zero, alpha = (k - D)/k. The method of four observed points with the same time interval was used to calculate the value of P-K. The growth rate constant k and the death rate constant D were calculated. The NaCl concentration of optimum growth rate of petroleum bacteria at 40.0 and 50.0 degreesC, respectively, have been obtained according to the curves k - D versus NaCl concentration, which are 0.26, 0.54 and 0.57 mol l(-1) for B-1, B-2 and B-3, respectively, at 50.0 degreesC, 0.26, 0.55 and 0.56 mol l(-1) for B-1, B-2 and B-3, respectively, at 40.0 degreesC. The results indicated that the effect of temperature on NaCl concentration of optimum growth rate was small. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Graphitic-nanofilaments (GNFs) supported ruthenium catalysts were prepared and characterized by NZ physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and temperature programmed reduction-mass spectroscopy (TPR-MS) and used for ammonia synthesis in a fixed bed microreactor. The TEMs of the Ru/GNFs and Ru-Ba/GNFs catalysts indicate that the Ru particles are in the range of 2-4 nm, which is the optimum size of Ru particles for the maximum number of B5 type sites. The activity of Ru-Ba/GNFs catalysts is higher than that of Ru-Ba/AC by about 25%. The methanation reaction on the Ru/GNFs catalyst is remarkably inhibited compared with a Ru/AC catalyst. High graphitization of GNFs is likely to be the reason for the high resistance to the methanation reaction. The power rate law for ammonia synthesis on Ru-Ba/GNFs catalysts can be expressed by r = Kp(NH3)(-0.4) P-N2(0.8) P-H2(-0.7), indicating that H-2 is an inhibitor for N-2 activation on the catalyst. Catalysts with the promoters Ba, K and Cs show large differences in activity for ammonia synthesis. The catalyst promoted with Ba (Ba/Ru = 0.2 molar ratio) was found to be the most active, whereas that with a K promoter was the least active. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production patterns and the influence of oxygen (O-2) concentration were studied based on a well operated composting plant. A real-time, online multi-gas detection system was applied to monitor the concentrations of H2S and O-2 in the pile during composting. The results indicate that H2S was mainly produced during the early stage of composting, especially during the first 40 h. Lack of available O-2 was the main reason for H2S production. Maintaining the O-2 concentration higher than 14% in the pile could reduce H2S production. This study suggests that shortening the interval between aeration or aerating continuously to maintain a high O-2 concentration in the pile was an effective strategy for restraining H2S production in sewage sludge composting. Birefringent ring-banded spherulites with radial periodic variation of thicknesses were grown from poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) solutions under conditions for which the Solution concentration was held constant during the whole development of the morphology. The as-grown ring-banded spherulites were investigated by optical (OM) and atomic force (AFM) microscopies, by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of samples sectioned parallel to the plane of film, and also by electron diffraction (ED) and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) techniques.

Microstructures and mechanical properties of the Mg-7Y-4Gd-xZn-0.4Zr (x = 0.5, 1.5, 3, and 5 wt.%) alloys in the as-cast, as-extruded, and peak-aged conditions have been investigated by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. It is found that the peak-aged Mg-7Y-4Gd-1.5Zn-0.4Zr alloys have the highest strength after aging at 220 A degrees C. The highest ultimate tensile strength and yield tensile strength are 418 and 320 MPa, respectively. The addition of 1.5 wt.% Zn to the based alloys results in a greater aging effect and better mechanical properties at both room and elevated temperatures. The improved mechanical properties are mainly ascribed to both a fine beta' phase and a long periodic stacking-ordered structure, which coexist together in the peak-aged alloys.

Well-faceted hexagonal ZnO microprisms with regular interior space have been successfully prepared by a template-free hydrothermal synthetic route. The morphologies of the products depend on the experimental conditions such as the solvent, the concentration of ammonia aqueous solution, and the reaction temperature. Through manipulation of the aging time, the as-prepared ZnO can be controlled as a monodispersed hexagonal twinning solid or as hollow microprisms. Moreover, the evolution process of the hollow ZnO nanoarchitecture after reaction for 2, 6, 12, and 24 h has been investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A possible growth mechanism has also been proposed and discussed. Furthermore, the photoluminescence (PL) measurement exhibits the unique emitting characteristic of hollow ZnO nanostructures.
