A bulk Ti45Zr35Ni17Cu3 alloy, which consisted of the icosahedral quasicrystalline phase, was prepared by mechanical alloying(MA) and subsequent pulse discharge sintering. Ti45Zr35Ni17Cu3 amorphous powders (with particle size < 50 mu m) were obtained after mechanical alloying for more than 150 h from the mixture of the elemental powder. The transformation temperature range from amorphous phase to the quasicrystalline phase was from 400 K to 900 K. The mechanical properties of the bulk quasicrystalline alloy have been examined at room temperature. The Vickers hardness and compressive fracture strength were 620 +/- 40 and 1030 +/- 60 MPa, respectively. The bulk quasicrystalline alloy exhibited the elastic deformation by the compressive test. The fracture mode was brittle cleavage fracture.

This paper reviews conflicting results on relativistic transformation formula for tem-perature obtained by different authors in the last half century, discusses the proper expres-sion for elementary work done under reversible processes, and presents a correct derivationof the transformation formula, rather similar in spirit to that of Einstein. It is pointed outthat the point of view adopted by Eddington, Ott, Mφller and Landsberg are erroneous, and that by correctly carrying out detailed analysis for Mφller's working model, which wasoriginally proposed to disprove Planck-Einstein result, we have arrived instead at a result incomplete agreement with that of Planck-Einstein. Thercupon this long standing controversyover the temperature transformation dilemma for relativistic thermodynamics is clarified.

A 3-D numerical model for pulsed laser transformation hardening (LTH) is developed using the finite element method. In this model, laser spatial and temporal intensity distribution, temperature-dependent thermophysical properties of material, and multi-phase transformations are considered. The influence of laser temporal pulse shape on connectivity of hardened zone, maximum surface temperature of material and hardening depth is numerically investigated at different pulse energy levels. Results indicate that these hardening parameters are strongly dependent on the temporal pulse shape. For the rectangular temporal pulse shape, the temperature field obtained from this model is in excellent agreement with analytical solution, and the predicted hardening depth is favorably compared with experimental one. It should be pointed out that appropriate temporal pulse shape should be selected according to pulse energy level in order to achieve desirable hardening quality under certain laser spatial intensity distribution.

The rapidly solidified microstructural and compositional features, the precipitation and transformation of carbides during tempering, and the impact wear resistance of an iron-based alloy coating prepared by laser cladding are investigated. The clad coating alloy, a powder mixture of Fe, Cr, W, Ni, and C with a weight ratio of 10:5:1.1.1, is processed using a continuous wave CO, laser. Microstructural studies demonstrate that the coating possesses the hypoeutectic microstructure comprising the primary dendritic gamma-austenite and interdendritic eutectic consisting of gamma-austenite and M7C3 carbides. gamma-Austenite is a non-equilibrium phase with an extended solid solution of alloying elements. During high temperature tempering at 963 K for 1 h, the precipitation of M23C6, MC and M2C carbides in austenite and in situ carbide transformation of M7C3 to M23C6 and M7C3 to M6C respectively are observed. In addition, the microstructure of the laser-clad coating reveals an evident secondary hardening and a superior impact wear resistance.

Based on detailed x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy we have found body-centered-cubic (bcc) Ni upon room-temperature rolling of nanocrystalline (nc) face-centered-cubic (fcc) Ni. The bcc phase forms via the Kurdjumov-Sachs (KS) martensitic transformation mechanism when the von Mises equivalent strain exceeds similar to 0.3, much higher than accessible in tensile testing. The fcc and bcc phases keep either the KS or the Nishiyama-Wasserman orientation relationship. Our results provide insights into the deformation physics in nc Ni, namely, the fcc-to-bcc phase transformation can also accommodate plasticity at large plastic strains. A novel pulsed laser surface processing technology is introduced, which can make use of the spatial and temporal profile of laser pulse to obtain ideal hardening parameters. The intensity distribution of laser pulse is spatially and temporally controlled by using laser shape transformation technology. A 3D numerical model including multi-phase transformations is established to explore material microstructure evolution induced by temperature field evolution. The influences of laser spatial-temporal profiles on hardening parameters are investigated. Different from the continuous laser processing technology, results indicate that spatial and temporal profiles are important factors in determining processing quality during pulsed laser processing method.

Er3+ doped aluminophosphate glasses with various Na2O/Li2O ratios were prepared at 1250 degrees C using a silica crucible to study mixed alkali effect (MAE). The effect of relative alkali content on glass transition temperature, crystallization temperature and thermal stability were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In addition, apparent activation energies for crystallization, E, were determined employing the Kissinger equation. The effect of Al2O3 content on the magnitude of MAE was also discussed. No mixed-alkali effect is observed on crystallization temperature. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Photosynthetic activity during rehydration at four temperatures (5, 15, 25, 35 degrees C) was studied in a terrestrial, highly drought-tolerant cyanobacterium, Nostoc flagelliforme. At all the temperatures, the optimum quantum yield F-v/F-m increased rapidly within I It and then increased slowly during the process of rehydration. The increase in F-v/F-m at 25 and 35 degrees C was larger than that at 5 and 15 degrees C. In addition, the changes of initial intensity of fluorescence (F-0) and variable fluorescence (F-v) were more significant at 25 and 35 degrees C than those at 5 and 15 degrees C. Chlorophyll a content increased with the increase of temperature during the course of rehydration, with this being more pronounced at 25 and 35 degrees C. The photosynthetic rates at 25 and 35 degrees C were higher than those at 5 and 15 degrees C. Induction of chlorophyll fluorescence with sustained rewetting at 5 and 15 degrees C had two phases of transformation, whereas at 25 and 35 degrees C it had a third peak kinetic phase and showed typical chlorophyll fluorescence steps on rewetting for 24 h, representing a normal physiological state. A comparison of the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, chlorophyll a content, and the chlorophyll fluorescence induction led to the conclusion that N. flagelliforme had a more rapid and complete recovery at 25 and 35 degrees C than that at 5 and 15 degrees C, although it could recover its photosynthetic activity at any of the four temperatures. This paper presents a study of the transformation of high-temperature AlN (HT-AlN) interlayer (IL) and its effect on the strain relaxation of Al0.25Ga0.75N/HT-AlN/GaN. The HT-AlN IL capped with Al0.25Ga0.75N transforms into AlGaN IL in which the Al composition increases with the HT-AlN IL thickness while the total Ga content keeps nearly constant. During the HT-AlN IL growth on GaN, the tensile stress is relieved through the formation of V trenches. The filling up of the V trenches by the subsequent Al0.25Ga0.75N growth is identified as the Ga source for the IL transformation, whose effect is very different from a direct growth of HT-AlGaN IL. The a-type dislocations generated during the advancement of V trenches and their filling up propagate into the Al0.25Ga0.75N overlayer. The a-type dislocation density increases dramatically with the IL thickness, which greatly enhances the strain relaxation of Al0.25Ga0.75N. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.
Synthesis and temperature-dependent near-band-edge emission of chain-like Mg-doped ZnO nanoparticles
Resumo:
Chain-like Mg-doped ZnO nanoparticles were prepared using a wet chemical method combined with subsequent heat treatment. The blueshifted near-band-edge emission of the doped ZnO sample with respect to the undoped one was investigated by temperature-dependent photoluminescence. Based on the energy shift of the free-exciton transition, a band gap enlargement of similar to 83 meV was estimated, which seems to result in the equivalent shift of the bound-exciton transition. At 50 K, the transformation from the donor-acceptor-pair to free-to-acceptor emissions was observed for both the undoped and doped samples. The results show that Mg doping leads to the decrease of the acceptor binding energy. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Three-point bending experiments were performed on as-cast and annealed samples of Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5 (Vit105) bulk metallic glasses over a wide range of temperatures varying from room temperature (293 K) to liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K). The results demonstrated that the free volume decrease due to annealing and/or cryogenic temperature can reduce the propensity for the formation of multiple shear bands and hence deteriorate plastic deformation ability. We clearly observed a sharp ductile-to-brittle transition (DBT), across which microscopic fracture feature transfers from micro-scale vein patterns to nano-scale periodic corrugations. Macroscopically, the corresponding fracture mode changes from ductile shear fracture to brittle tensile fracture. The shear transformation zone volume, taking into account free volume, temperature and strain rate, is proposed to quantitatively characterize the DBT behavior in fracture of metallic glasses.
