A highly sensitive microstructured polymer optical fiber (MPOF) probe for hydrogen peroxide was made by forming a rhodamine 6G-doped titanium dioxide film on the side walls of array holes in an MPOF. It was found that hydrogen peroxide only has a response to the MPOF probe in a certain concentration of potassium iodide in sulfuric acid solution. The calibration graph of fluorescence intensity versus hydrogen peroxide concentration is linear in the range of 1.6 x 10(-7) mol/L to 9.6 x 10(-5) mol/L. The method, with high sensitivity and a wide linear range, has been applied to the determination of trace amounts of hydrogen peroxide in a few real samples, such as rain water and contact lens disinfectant, with satisfactory results.

Recently, Chen and Gao [Chen, S., Gao, H., 2007. Bio-inspired mechanics of reversible adhesion: orientation-dependent adhesion strength for non-slipping adhesive contact with transversely isotropic elastic materials. J. Mech. Phys. solids 55, 1001-1015] studied the problem of a rigid cylinder in non-slipping adhesive contact with a transversely isotropic solid subjected to an inclined pulling force. An implicit assumption made in their study was that the contact region remains symmetric with respect to the center of the cylinder. This assumption is, however, not self-consistent because the resulting energy release rates at two contact edges, which are supposed to be identical, actually differ from each other. Here we revisit the original problem of Chen and Gao and derive the correct solution by removing this problematic assumption. The corrected solution provides a proper insight into the concept of orientation-dependent adhesion strength in anisotropic elastic solids. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We derive a relationship between the initial unloading slope, contact depth, and the instantaneous relaxation modulus for indentation in linear viscoelastic solids by a rigid indenter with an arbitrary axisymmetric smooth profile. Although the same expression is well known for indentation in elastic and in elastic-plastic solids, we show that it is also true for indentation in linear viscoelastic solids, provided that the unloading rate is sufficiently fast. Furthermore, the same expression holds true for both fast loading and unloading. These results should provide a sound basis for using the relationship for determining properties of viscoelastic solids using indentation techniques.

Heat and mass transfer of a porous permeable wall in a high temperature gas dynamical flow is considered. Numerical simulation is conducted on the ground of the conjugate mathematical model which includes filtration and heat transfer equations in a porous body and boundary layer equations on its surface. Such an approach enables one to take into account complex interaction between heat and mass transfer in the gasdynamical flow and in the structure subjected to this flow. The main attention is given to the impact of the intraporous heat transfer intensity on the transpiration cooling efficiency.

Geckos and many insects have evolved elastically anisotropic adhesive tissues with hierarchical structures that allow these animals not only to adhere robustly to rough surfaces but also to detach easily upon movement. In order to improve Our understanding of the role of elastic anisotropy in reversible adhesion, here we extend the classical JKR model of adhesive contact mechanics to anisotropic materials. In particular, we consider the plane strain problem of a rigid cylinder in non-slipping adhesive contact with a transversely isotropic elastic half space with the axis of symmetry oriented at an angle inclined to the surface. The cylinder is then subjected to an arbitrarily oriented pulling force. The critical force and contact width at pull-off are calculated as a function of the pulling angle. The analysis shows that elastic anisotropy leads to an orientation-dependent adhesion strength which can vary strongly with the direction of pulling. This study may suggest possible mechanisms by which reversible adhesion devices can be designed for engineering applications. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A steady-state subsonic interface crack propagating between an elastic solid and a rigid substrate with crack face contact is studied. Two cases with respective to the contact length are considered, i.e., semi-infinite and finite crack face contact. Different from a stationary or an open subsonic interface crack, stress singularity at the crack tip in the present paper is found to be non-oscillatory. Furthermore, in the semi-infinite contact case, the singularity of the stress field near the crack tip is less than 1/2. In the finite contact case, no singularity exists near the crack tip, but less than 1/2 singularity does at the end of the contact zone. In both cases, the singularity depends on the linear contact coefficient and the crack speed. Asymptotic solutions near the crack tip are given and analyzed. In order to satisfy the contact conditions, reasonable region of the linear contact coefficient is found. In addition, the solution predicts a non-zero-energy dissipation rate due to crack face contact.

We consider adhesive contact between a rigid sphere of radius R and a graded elastic half-space with Young's modulus varying with depth according to a power law E = E-0(z/c(0))(k) (0 < k < 1) while Poisson's ratio v remaining a constant. Closed-form analytical solutions are established for the critical force, the critical radius of contact area and the critical interfacial stress at pull-off. We highlight that the pull-off force has a simple solution of P-cr= -(k+3)pi R Delta gamma/2 where Delta gamma is the work of adhesion and make further discussions with respect to three interesting limits: the classical JKR solution when k = 0, the Gibson solid when k --> 1 and v = 0.5, and the strength limit in which the interfacial stress reaches the theoretical strength of adhesion at pull-off. We experimentally investigate the generation of high-order harmonics in a 4-mm-long gas cell using midinfrared femtosecond pulses at various wavelengths of 1240 nm, 1500 nm, and 1800 nm. It is observed that the yield and cutoff energy of the generated high-order harmonics critically depend on focal position, gas pressure, and size of the input beam which can be controlled by an aperture placed in front of the focal lens. By optimizing the experimental parameters, we achieve a cutoff energy at similar to 190 eV with the 1500 nm driving pulses, which is the highest for the three wavelengths chosen in our experiment.

N-p-n Si/SiGe/Si heterostructure has been grown by a disilane (Si2H6) gas and Ge solid sources molecular beam epitaxy system using phosphine (PH3) and diborane (B2H6) as n- and p-type in situ doping sources, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) measurements show that the grown heterostructure has a good quality, the boron doping is confined to the SiGe base layer, and the Ge has a trapezoidal profile. Postgrowth P implantation was performed to prepare a good ohmic contact to the emitter. Heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) has been fabricated using the grown heterostructure and a common-emitter current gain of 75 and a cut-off frequency of 20 GHz at 300 K have been obtained. The influence of annealed ohmic contact metals on the electron mobility of a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is investigated on ungated AlGaN/GaN heterostructures and AlGaN/GaN heterostructure field effect transistors (AlGaN/GaN HFETs). Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics for ungated AlGaN/GaN heterostructures and capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics for AlGaN/GaN HFETs are obtained, and the electron mobility for the ungated AlGaN/GaN heterostructure is calculated. It is found that the electron mobility of the 2DEG for the ungated AlGaN/GaN heterostructure is decreased by more than 50% compared with the electron mobility of Hall measurements. We propose that defects are introduced into the AlGaN barrier layer and the strain of the AlGaN barrier layer is changed during the annealing process of the source and drain, causing the decrease in the electron mobility.

In this paper the influence of contact geometry, including the round tip of the indenter and the roughness of the specimen, on hardness behavior for elastic plastic materials is studied by means of finite element simulation. We idealize the actual indenter by an equivalent rigid conic indenter fitted smoothly with a spherical tip and examine the interaction of this indenter with both a flat surface and a rough surface. In the latter case the rough surface is represented by either a single spherical asperity or a dent (cavity). Indented solids include elastic perfectly plastic materials and strain hardening elastic-plastic materials, and the effects of the yield stress and strain hardening index are explored. Our results show that due to the finite curvature of the indenter tip the hardness versus indentation depth curve rises or drops (depending on the material properties of the indented solids) as the indentation depth decreases, in qualitative agreement with experimental results. Surface asperities and dents of curvature comparable to that of the indenter tip can appreciably modify the hardness value at small indentation depth. Their effects would appear as random variation in hardness.

In order to realize the common-emitter characteristics of the tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminium (Alq(3))-based organic transistors, we used Au/Al double metal layer as the base, thus the vertical metal-base transistors with structure of Al/n-Si/Au/Al/Alq(3)/LiF/Al were constructed. It was found that the contact properties between the base and the organic semiconductors play an important role in the device performance. The utilization of Au/Al double layer metal base allows the devices to operate at high gain in the common-emitter and common-base mode at low operational voltage.

Novel bisphenol monomers (1a-d) containing phthalimide groups were synthesized by the reaction of phenolphthalein with ammonia, methylamine, aniline, and 4-tert-butylanilne, respectively. A series of cardo poly (arylene ether sulfone)s was synthesized via aromatic nucleophilic substitution of 1a-d with dichlorodiphenylsulfone, and characterized in terms of thermal, mechanical and gas transport properties to H-2, O-2, N-2, and CO2. The polymers showed high glass transition temperature in the range 230-296 degrees C, good solubility in polar solvents as well as excellent thermal stability with 5% weight loss above 410 degrees C. The most permeable membrane studied showed permeability coefficients of 1.78 barrers to O-2 and 13.80 barrers to CO2, with ideal selectivity. factors of 4.24 for O-2/N-2 pair and 28.75 for CO2/CH4 pair. Furthermore, the structure-property relationship among these cardo poly(arylene ether sulfone)s had been discussed on solubility, thermal stability, mechanical, and gas permeation properties. The results indicated that introducing 4-tert-butylphenyl group improved the gas permeability of polymers evidently.

A series of soluble poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs) bearing triethylammonium sulfonate groups were synthesized directly using trimellitic anhydride chloride (TMAC) polycondensation with sulfonated diamine such as 2,2'-benzidinedisulfonic acid (BDSA), 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether-2,2'-disulfonic acid (ODADS), and nonsulfonated diamine 4,4-diaminodiphenyl methane in the presence of triethylamine. The resulting copolymers exhibited high molecular weights (high inherent viscosity), and a combination of desirable properties such as good solubility in dipolar aprotic solvents, film-forming capability, and good mechanical properties. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction revealed that the polymers were amorphous. These copolymers showed high permeability coefficients of water vapor because of the presence of the hydrophilic triethylammonium sulfonate groups. The water vapor permeability coefficients (P-w) and permselectivity coefficients of water vapor to nitrogen and methane [alpha(H2O/N-2) and (alpha(H2O/CH4)] Of the films increased with increasing the amount of the triethylammonium sulfonated groups.
