In the present work, two kinds of CPVC carboxylated ionic copolymers were prepared by a new method. First, a graft copolymer (CPVC-cg-AA) comprising of polyacrylic acid (PAA) as branched chains and chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) as backbone was synthesized by in-situ chlorinating graft copolymerization (ISCGC). Second, the acid groups of the graft copolymer were neutralized by sodium hydroxide and aluminium hydroxide, respectively in order to prepare carboxylated ionic copolymers.

The separation of ethyl acetate and ethanol (EtOH) is important but difficult due to their close boiling points and formation of an azeotropic mixture. The separation of the azeotropic mixture of ethyl acetate and EtOH using the hydrophilic ionic liquids (ILs) 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (alkyl = butyl, hexyl, and octyl) ([C(n)mim]Cl, n = 4, 6, 8) and 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and bromide ([Amim]Cl and [Amim]Br) has been investigated. Triangle phase diagrams of five ILs with ethyl acetate and EtOH were constructed, and the biphasic regions were found as follows: [Amim]Cl > [Amim]Br > [C(4)mim]Cl > [C(6)mim]Cl > [C(8)mim]Cl. The mechanisms of the ILs including cation, anion, and polarity effect were discussed.

A rapid and simple analytical method was developed for the simultaneous and quantitative determination and separation of hydrophilic imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [C(4)mim]Cl; 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [C(6)mim]Cl; 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [C(8)mim]Cl; 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [Amim]Cl; or 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, [Amim]Br) with miscible ethyl acetate and EtOH and their mixtures using reverse phase liquid chromatography coupled with refractive index detection (RPLC-RI). The influence of 60 to 100% (volume percentage) methanol in the mobile phase on the IL systems ([C(4)mim]Cl, [C(6)mim]Cl, [C(8)mim]Cl, [Amim]Br, or [Amim]Cl)-ethyl acetate-EtOH was investigated.

Uniform rare earth phosphate (REPO4, RE = La-Tb) nanocrystals were successfully synthesized in a properly designed TBP/[Omim]Cl/H2O (tributylphosphate/1-octyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride/water) microemulsion system. The phosphoryl groups anchored the TBP molecules oil the surfaces of the nanocrystals, and this made the nanocrystals easily dispersed in some imidazolium-based ILs. LaPO4:Eu3+ and CePO4:Tb3+ nanocrystals capped with TBP showed bright red and green emission under UV excitation, with enhanced emission intensity and lifetimes compared with the uncapped ones.

Two new silica-based organic-inorganic hybrid materials (B104SGs and O104SGs) doped with a binary mixture of imidazolium and phosphonium ionic liquids have been synthesized and used as sorbents in batch system for rare earths (RE) separation. Imidazolium ionic liquids 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (C(4)mim(+)PF(6)(-)) or 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (C(8)mim(+)PF(6)(-)) acted as porogens to prepare porous materials and additives to stabilize extractant within silica gel.

A series of silica-based organic–inorganic hybrid materials were prepared by the sol–gel process for Cr(III) and Cr(VI) adsorption. These silica materials generally had high surface areas, good physical–chemical stability and high thermal stability. Trialkylmethylammonium bis 2,4,4-trimethylpentylphosphinate ([A336][C272]) and trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis 2,4,4-trimethylpentylphosphinate (Cyphos IL 104) were explored as porogens to prepare porous silica and as extractants to extract chromium ions. Cyphos IL 104 and [A336][C272] functionalized silica sorbents (SG-2, SG-5) can be effectively used for the removal of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions by adjusting pH values, whereas trialkylmethylammonium chloride (Aliquat 336) and bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272) functionalized silica sorbents (SG-3, SG-4) can only be used for the removal of the single chromium species, Cr(VI) or Cr(III).

The hydrophobic carbon nanotubes-ionic liquid (CNTs-IL) get forms a stable modified film on hydrophobic graphite electrode surface. Laccase immobilized on the CNTs-IL gel film modified electrode shows good thermal stability and enhanced electrochemical catalytic ability. The optimal bioactivity occurs with increasing temperature and this optimum is 20 degrees C higher in comparison to free laccase. The improvement of laccase thermal stability may be due to the microenvironment of hydrophobic CNTs-IL gel on graphite electrode surface. On the other hand, the sensitive detection of oxygen has been achieved due to the feasibility of oxygen reduction by both of laccase and nanocomposite of CNTs-IL gel. Furthermore, the laccase hybrid nanocomposite also shows the fast electrochemical response and high sensitivity to the inhibitors of halide ions with the approximate IC50 of 0.01, 4.2 and 87.5 mM for the fluoride, chloride and bromide ions, respectively. It implies the feasibility of laccase modified electrode as an inhibition biosensor to detect the modulators of laccase.

Two series of the nanocomposite hydrogels were synthesized by in-situ solution polymerization. One pre-gel solution was obtained by directly dispersing the montmorillonite (MMT) powder into aqueous monomer solution and the other pre-gel solution was obtained by mixing monomer aqueous solution and the dispersion of MMT. The structure and performance of two series of hydrogels in dry state were studied by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, TEM and Al-27 MAS NMR. Compressing test results showed that the gel strength of the hydrogels prepared by the latter method was much higher than that by the former method. When acryloyloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DAC) was introduced into the system, hydrogels with excellent nanostructure could be synthesized. The result of Al-27 MAS NMR suggested that the chemical environment of aluminum in MMT was changed by the introduction of DAC due to the interaction between the groups of DAC and MMT layers. Thus, the combination of copolymerizing with strong polar monomers and using the dispersion of MMT were the effective ways to obtain tranocomposite hydrogel of MMT and ionic monomers. The nanostructure of the hydrogel improved the gel strength, while the swelling ratio of the hydrogel depended on synergic effects of multifunctional groups.

The use of room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) as media for electrochemical application is very attractive. In this work, the electrochemical deposition of silver was investigated at a glassy carbon electrode in hydrophobic 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIMPF6) and hydrophilic 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF4) RTILs and in KNO3 aqueous solution by cyclic voltammetric and potentiostatic transient techniques. The voltammograms showed the presence of reduction and oxidation peaks associated with the deposition and dissolution of silver from AgBF4 in both BMIMPF6 and BMIMBF4, resembling the redox behavior of AgNO3 in KNO3 aqueous solution. A crossover loop was observed in all the cyclic voltammograms of these electrochemical systems, indicating a nucleation process. From the analysis of the experimental current transients, it was shown that the electrochemical deposition process of silver in these media was characteristic of 3D nucleation with diffusion-controlled hemispherical growth, and the silver nucleation closely followed the response predicted for progressive nucleation in BMIMPF6 and instantaneous nucleation in KNO3 aqueous solution, respectively.

A novel dissolving process for chitin and chitosan has been developed by using the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl) as a solvent, and a novel application of chitin and chitosan as substitutes for amino-functionalized synthetic polymers for capturing and releasing CO2 has also been exploited based on this processing strategy.

An ionic exclusion-enrichment phenomenon has been found at the ends of a nano-channel when electric-driven fluid passes through a micro-/nano-hybrid channel [1-3]. In our experiments, the hybrid channels are fabricated with two poly-dimethysiloxane (PDMS) monoliths microchannels (100um X20um X 9mm) and a nanoporous polycarbonate nuclear track-etched (PCTE) membrane (with 50nm pores). The flows are driven under different electrical potential and the test liquids with different PH values are used. The ion depletion in the source channel is observed by the MicroPIV system. In addition, the numerical simulations about ionic exclusion-enrichment in the hybrid channel are carried out. Some results are as followed:

Yb3+Er3+-codoped chloride-modified germanate-bismuth-lead glasses have been synthesized by the conventional melting and quenching method. Structural and thermal stability properties have been obtained on the basis of the Raman spectra and differential thermal analysis, which indicate that the PbCl2 addition has an important influence on the phonon density of states, maximum phonon energy, and thermal stability of host glasses. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters and quantum efficiencies were calculated on the basis of the Judd-Ofelt theory and lifetime measurements. For the 1.53 mu m emission band, the full widths at the half-maximum increase and peak wavelengths are blueshifted with increasing PbCl2 content. Moreover, the effect of the PbCl2 addition on the phonon density of states, OH- content, and upconversion luminescence has been discussed and evaluated. Our results reveal that, with increasing PbCl2 content, the decrease of phonon density and OH- content contributes more to the enhanced upconversion emissions than that of maximum phonon energy. Tm3+-doped oxide-chloride germanate and tellurite glasses have been synthesized by conventional melting method. Intense up-conversion luminescence emissions were simultaneously observed at room temperature in these glasses. The possible up-conversion mechanisms are discussed and estimated. However, in these Tm3+-doped glasses, tellurite glass showed weaker up-conversion emissions than germanate glass, which is inconsistent with the prediction from the difference of maximum phonon energy between tellurite and germanate glasses. In this paper, Raman spectroscopy was employed to investigate the origin of the difference in up-conversion luminescence in the two glasses. Our results confirm that, besides the maximum phonon energy, the phonon density of host glasses is also an important factor in determining the up-conversion efficiency. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Effect of the substitutions of chloride for fluoride on the chemical and physical properties and the crystallization behavior in heavy metal fluoride glasses has been investigated. The characteristic temperature of the glass does not changed obviously when the fluoride was taken place by chloride. Compared with samples of being free of ErF3, the doping samples are more inclined to be surface crystallization. Optical basicity in the glass system increases with increasing the negative charge provided by the chloride atoms and the absorption peak red shifted is observed in absorption spectra. XRD measurements show that not a single crystalline phase appears in the heated glass samples, which indicate the substitutions of chloride for fluoride with a variety of crystalline precipitation trends.
