BR-D96N is a kind of genetically site-specific mutant of bacteriorhodopsin (BR) with obvious photochromic effect. Compared to the wild type BR, the lifetime of M state of BR-D96N is prolonged to several minutes so that the photochromic kinetics and the intermediates formation can be studied by the conventional spectra analysis. In the experiment, the absorption spectra of the sample at different time after light illumination are measured with spectrophotometer. By fitting and analyzing the variation of the spectra, we suppose there-are three main states in the photochromic process, i.e. B state (light-adapted state), M state and D state (dark-adapted state). The absorption spectra of the B state, M state and D state are extracted from the experimental data based on this three-state model and the spectra at various time are fitted With the least square method. So, the variations of population percentages of the M state, B state and D state are obtained and the M state and B state lifetimes are estimated. In another, way, from measuring the absorption dynamics at 407 nm and 568 nm, the M state and B state lifetimes are also obtained by two exponential data fitting, which give coincident results with those of the spectra analysis.

A novel carbon-supported palladium-rich Pd3Pt1/C catalyst prepared by a modified polyol process showed a better cell performance than Pt/C in direct methanol fuel cells, which may be attributed to palladium's inactivity to methanol electro-oxidation while exhibiting good performance to oxygen reduction reaction.

Chiral ferrocene-based phosphine-imine ligands 1-3 and sulfur-imine ligand 4 were applied in the palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation of cycloalkenyl esters. The results revealed that the substitutents in aryl ring, ferrocenylmethyl and benzyliene position strongly affected the enantioselective induction of phosphine-imine ligands, and the most stereoselective ligand was ferrocenylphosphine-imine 1b with a nitro group in the meta-position of phenyl ring. Under the optimized condition, up to 91% (enantiomeric excesses) e.e. of cyclic alkylation product was obtained by the use of 1b. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A palladium membrane has been prepared by electroless plating on the surface of a porous stainless steel tube. Since the large surface pores of the tube are obstacle for preparation of a defect-free palladium film on the surface, zirconium oxide particles were deposited inside the pores. The mean thickness of the resulting Pd membrane on the modified tube was ca. 10 mum. It is suggested that the permeability of hydrogen is partly governed by gas diffusion in the pores. Performance of palladium-containing supported catalysts in the oxidation of 1-butene was investigated in a fixed-bed flow microreactor. The Pd-Fe-HCl/Ti-Al catalyst is the best among the five Pd-Fe-HCl/X (A = SiO2, gamma-Al2O3, Al-Ti, TiO2, MCM-22) catalysts for the oxidation of I-butene to butanone. It is interesting that high propionic acid selectivity can be obtained when V and H2SO4 are added to the palladium-containing supported catalysts.

Palladium nanoparticle-loaded carbon nanofibers (Pd/CNFs) were synthesized by the combination of electrospinning and thermal treatment processes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show that spherical Pd nanoparticles (NPs) are well-dispersed on the surfaces of CNFs or embedded in CNFs. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern indicates that cubic phase of Pd was formed during the reduction and carbonization processes, and the presence of Pd NPs promoted the graphitization of CNFs. This nanocomposite material exhibited high electric conductivity and accelerated the electron transfer, as verified by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV).

Palladium nanoparticle-loaded carbon nanofibers (Pd/CNFs) were prepared by electrospinning and subsequent thermal treatment processes. Pd/CNFs modified carbon paste electrode (Pd/CNF-CPE) displayed excellent electrochemical catalytic activities towards dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA) and ascorbic acid (AA). The oxidation overpotentials of DA, UA and AA were decreased significantly compared with those obtained at the bare CPE. Differential pulse voltammetry was used for the simultaneous determination of DA, UA and AA in their ternary mixture.
