Palladium, iridium, and rhodium complexes of 2-methyleneimidazolines have been synthesized by selective phosphine-assisted activation of the 2-methyl C-H bonds in 2-methylimidazolium compounds. Metallacycles of various sizes were obtained in the reaction of phosphine-tethered 2-methylimidazolium compounds and [{M(cod)X}(2)] (M = Rh or Ir cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene: X = alkoxyl or Cl). representative complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography. The selectivity for aliphatic C(sp(3))H versus aromatic C(sp(2))H activation could be adjusted by means of the steric bulk of the OR ligand, whereby a bulky, OR group favors activation of the 2-methyl C(sp(3))-H bond. Experimental results confirmed that a methyl C-H activation product (a seven-membered iridacycle) is the kinetic product, while the aryl C-H activation product (a six-membered iridacycle) is the thermodynamic product.

Selectin/ligand interactions initiate the multistep adhesion and signaling cascades in the recruitment of leukocytes from circulation to inflamed tissues and may also play a role in tumor metastasis. Kinetic properties of these interactions are essential determinants governing blood-borne cells' tethering to and rolling on the vessel wall. Extending our recently developed micropipette method, we have measured the kinetic rates of E-selectin/ligand interactions. Red cells coated with an E-selectin construct were allowed to bind HL-60 or Colo-205 cells bearing carbohydrate ligands. Specific adhesions were observed to occur at isolated points, the frequency of which followed a Poisson distribution. These point attachments were formed at the same rate with both the HL-60 and Colo-205 cells (0.14 +/- 0.04 and 0.13 +/- 0.03 mum(2) s(-1) per unit density of E-selectin, respectively) but dissociated from the former at a rate twice as fast as did from the latter (0.92 +/- 0.23 and 0.44 +/- 0.10 s(-1), respectively). The reverse rates agree well with those measured by the flow chamber. The forward rates are orders of magnitude higher than those of Fc gamma receptors interacting with IgG measured under similar conditions, consistent with the rapid kinetics requirement for the function of E-selectin/ligand binding, which is to capture leukocytes on endothelial surfaces from flow.

Three kinds of metal(II) tetraazaporphyrin complexes with blue-violet and red light wavelength absorption were synthesized by refluxing tetraazaporphyrin ligand and different metal(II) ions, respectively. Their structures were confirmed by elemental analysis, LDI-TOF-MS, FT-IR and UV-Vis. The solubility of metal(II) tetraazaporphyrin complexes in organic solvents and absorption properties of their chloroform solution and films on K9 glass in the region 250-800 nm were measured. The influence on the difference of absorption maximum from metal(II) tetraazaporphyrin complexes to tetraazaporphyrin ligand by different metal(II) ions was studied. Two kinds of nickel(II) and copper(II) P-diketone complexes derived from thenoyltrifluoroacetone ligand with blue-violet light absorption were synthesized by reacting free ligand and different metal(II) ions in sodium methoxide solution. Their structures were postulated based on elemental analysis, ESI-MS, FT-IR spectra and UV-vis electronic absorption spectra. Smooth films on K9 glass substrates were prepared using the spin-coating method. A novel neodymium pentafluoropropionate binuclear complex, Nd(C(2)F(5)COO)(3)Dipy (Dipy: 2,2'-dipyridyl), was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. At a concentration of 0.2 M in DMSO-d(6), the Judd-Ofelt parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4), Omega(6)) were calculated from the UV-Vis spectrum. According to the small value of Omega(2) and the zero splitting energy of (4)F/(3/2) level, a symmetric ligand field of the complex was confirmed in DMSO-d(6). Strong emission of the complex in DMSO-d(6) at 1057 nm with a decay time about 1.3 mu s were detected when excited at 800 nm pumped by a laser diode. The stimulated emission cross-section of (4)F(3/2) -> (4)I(11/2) fluorescence transition was 2.36 x 10 (20) cm(2) and comparable with some laser glasses, which indicated good radiative properties of this neodymium pentafluoropropionate binuclear complex in liquid matrix. Through tuning the length of flexible bis(triazole) ligands and different metal ion coordination geometries, four Wells-Dawson polyoxoanion-based hybrid compounds, [Cu-6(btp)(3)(P2W18O62)] center dot 3H(2)O (1) (btp = 1,3-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)propane), [Cu-6(btb)(3)((P2W18O62) center dot 2H(2)O (2), [Cu-3(btb)(6)(P2W18O62)] center dot 6H(2)O (btb = 1,4-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)butane) (3), and [Cu-3(btx)(5.5)((P2W18O62) center dot 4H(2)O (btx = 1,6-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)hexane) (4), were synthesized and structurally characterized. in compound 1, the metal-organic motif exhibits a ladder-like chain, which is further fused by the ennead-dentate [P2W18O62](6-) anions to construct a 3D structure. In compound 2, the metal-organic motif exhibits an interesting Cu-btb grid layer, and the ennead-dentate polyoxoanions are sandwiched by two Cu-btb layers to construct a 3D structure

Reactions of zinc(II) or cadmium(II) salts with terephthalic acid (H(2)tp) and 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl) propane (bpp) have afforded four coordination polymers at room temperature, [Zn(mu-tp)(mu-bpp)](n)center dot 2nH(2)O (1), [Cd-2(mu-tp)(2)(mu-bpp)(3)](n)center dot 2nH(2)O (2), [Cd(mu-tp)(mu-bpp)(H2O)](n)center dot nH(2)O (3), and [Cd-2(mu-tp)(mu-bpp)(2)(bpp)(2)Br-2](n) (4). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction has revealed interesting topological features for these compounds.

The ligands 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1.3-butanedione (Hbfa) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) were used to prepare ternary lanthanide (Ln) complexes [Dy(bfa)(3)phen and Tm(bfa)(3)phen]. Crystal data: Dy(bfa)(3)phen C(42)H(26)FqN(2)O(6)Dy, triclinic, P (1) over bar, a= 9.9450(6) angstrom, b = 14.0944(9) angstrom, c = 14.6043(9) angstrom, alpha = 82.104(1)degrees, beta = 87.006(1)degrees, gamma = 76.490(1)degrees, V = 1971.1(2)angstrom(3), Z = 2; Tm(bfa)(3)phen C42H26F9N2O6Tm, triclinic, P (1) over bar, a = 9.898(5)angstrom, b = 13.918(5)angstrom, c = 14.753(5)angstrom, a = 83.517(5)degrees, alpha = 86.899(5)degrees, gamma = 76.818(5)degrees, V = 1965.3(14)angstrom(3), Z = 2. The coordination number of the central Ln(3+) (Ln = Dy, Tm) ion is eight, with six oxygen atoms from three Hbfa ligands and two nitrogen atoms from the phen ligand.

The < 110 >-oriented perovskite is very rare in the hybrid perovskites family. In this work, an unusual layered < 110 >-oriented hybrid perovskite, which is stabilized by a special organic ligand, 2-(aminoethyl)isothiourea, has been obtained. This ligand combines a primary amine and a formamidine on the two ends of one molecule. Introduction of the special ligand brings about contorted inorganic sheets in the hybrid perovskite structure. The optical properties of the new < 110 >-oriented perovskite were studied.

The facile, rapid, and effective synthesis of coordination polymer La(1,3,5-BTC)(H2O)(6) has been realized via direct precipitation at room temperature. It is found that the crystal structure is of monoclinic, space group Cc. The doped Eu3+ or Tb3+ ions samples have the same phase and exhibit red and green emissions under UV light excitation, respectively.

Two bromo rhenium(I) carbonyl complexes with the formula of [Re(CO)(3)(L)Br], where L = 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen-Re) and 5-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline (Pyph-Re), were successfully synthesized with the aim to analyze the effect of the pyrrole (Py) moiety on the photophysical properties of Pyph-Re. It was found that the triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer d pi (Re) --> pi*(N-N) emission of Phen-Re and Pyph-Re centered at ca. 527 nm with the luminescence quantum yield (LQY) of 0.015 and ca. 578 nm with the LQY of 0.011, respectively. At the same time, the geometrical structures of the ground state and the absorption spectral properties of Phen-Re and Pyph-Re were also calculated with the 6-31G* basis set employed on C, H, N, O, and Br atoms, and LANL2DZ adopted on Re atom.

The quantum yield, lifetime, and absorption spectrum of four [Ru(bpy)(2)L](+) [where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridyl; L is represented by the deprotonated form of 2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine (L1) or 2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyrazine (L2)], as well as their methylated complexes [Ru(bpy)(2)LMe](2+) (RuL1Me and RuL2Me) are closely ligand dependent. In this paper, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) were performed to compare the above properties among these complexes. The calculated results reveal that the replacement of pyridine by pyrazine or the attachment of a CH3 group to the tetrazolate ring greatly increases the pi-accepting ability of the ancillary ligands.

Ternary europium complex Eu(tta)(3)phen was covalently bonded with the general mesoporous. material SBA-15 and SBA-15-type of periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) material via impregnation of Eu(tta)(3)center dot 2H(2)O into phen-S15 and phen-PMO, respectively, through a ligand exchange reaction. The parent materials of phen-S15 and phen-PMO were synthesized by co-condensation of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) or 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTESE) and the functionalized chelate ligand 5-(N,N-bis(3-triethoxysilyl)propyl)ureyl-1,10-phenanthroline (phen-Si) in the presence of Pluronic P123 surfactant as template, which were confirmed by SEM, XRD, FTIR, Si-29 CP-MAS NMR, and N-2 adsorption measurements.

A series of dysprosium complex doped xerogels with the same first ligand (acac = acetylacetone) and different neutral ligands were synthesized in situ via a sol-gel process. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, diffuse reflectance (DR) spectra, and near-infrared (NIR) luminescent properties of dysprosium complexes and dysprosium complex doped xerogels are described in detail. The results reveal that the dysprosium complex is successfully synthesized in situ in the corresponding xerogel. Excitation at the maximum absorption wavelength of the ligands resulted in the characteristic NIR luminescence of the Dy3+ ion, which contributes to the energy transfer from the ligands to the central Dy3+ ion in both the dysprosium complexes and xerogels via an antenna effect.
