This article is the result of experimental studies of the rheologv, viscosities, surface tensions, and atomization of water-methanol and diesel emulsions. The Span 80 and Tween 60 are employed to make three emulsifying agents, Y01, Y02, and Y03, with viscosity of 1.32-1.5 Pa s and HLB values of 5.36, 4.83, and 4.51, respectively. In the water-in-oil emulsions, the aqueous phase is between 10% and 50%; the agent concentration added is 0.8-8.0%. The viscosity of the emulsions is 0.003-0.02 Pa s, and the surface tens ion is 0.04-0.1 N/m. The types and concentrations of agents significantly influence the viscosity of the emulsions, and the higher concentration of the aqueous phase (<50%) in creases the viscosities of the emulsions, especially for higher agent concentration. Interfacial membrane and HLB values of the agents can explain all these phenomena. Higher aqueous phase concentration and agent viscosity results in larger Sauter mean diameter.

The spray of emulsified fuel, composed of diesel fuel, water and methanol can make micro-explosion under high temperature conditions, and the viscosity and the atomization characteristics of emulsion have significant effects on the micro- explosion of emulsions. To clarify the combustion mechanism of water-in-oil emulsion sprays, combustion bomb experiments were carried out, and the droplet group micro- explosions in W/O fuel emulsion sprays in a high-pressure, high-temperature bomb were observed clearly by a multi-pulsed, off-axis, image-plane ruby laser holocamera and continuously by a high-speed CCD camera. The viscosity and atomization characteristics of emulsions were also studied experimentally. The experimental results show that the higher concentration of the aqueous phase (water-methanol) (<50%) increases the viscosity of the emulsions, especially for higher agent concentration, and higher aqueous phase concentration and higher viscosity results in lager Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD). The experiment results also show that the different kinds of emulsifying agents, with different Hydrophile-Lipophile Balance (HLB) values, have significant influence on the viscosity of the emulsions.

This paper shows the result of experimental studies of the influence of viscosities, surface tensions on atomization characteristics of water/methanol and diesel emulsions. Three emulsifying agents Y01, Y02 and Y03, with viscosity of 1.32 ~ 1.5 Pa·s and HLB values of 5.36, 4.83 and 4.51 respectively was produced by Span 80 and Tween 60. In the W/O emulsions, the aqueous phase is between 10% and 50%; the agent concentration added is 0.8 ~ 8.0%. The viscosity of the emulsions is 0.003 ~ 0.02 Pa·s, and the surface tension is 0.04 ~ 0.1 N/m. The types and concentrations of agents and the aqueous phase ( < 50%) significantly influence the viscosity of the emulsions and the Sauter Mean Diameter, measured by Malvern Particle Analyzer SERIES 2600.

Based on amount of field investigation and laboratory analysis, this paper emphasized on the establishment of soil improvement benefit evaluation models. It is pointed out that the benefit evaluation models can be simulated by taking litter biomass, mean diameter of breast high (D), mean height (H) and (D 2H) as independent variables and taking comprehensive benefit evaluation index as dependent variable. The models vary with different independent variables and can be chosen to use according to actual situation.

CeF3 and CeF3:Tb3+ nanoparticles were prepared by reverse microemulsion with a functional monomer, methyl methacrylate (MMA), as the oil phase, and CeF3:Tb3+/poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites were obtained via polymerization of the MMA monomer. The nanoparticles and nanocomposites have been well characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), low- and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UV/vis transmission spectra, photoluminescence excitation, and emission spectra and luminescence decays. The well-crystallized CeF3 and CeF3:Tb3+ nanoparticles are spherical with a mean diameter of 15 nm. They show the characteristic emission of Ce3+ 5d-4f (313 nm, D-2-F-2(5/2); 323 nm, D-2-F-2(7/2)) and Tb3+ D-5(4)-F-7(J) (J = 6-3, with D-5(4)-F-7(5) green emission at 541 nm as the strongest one) transitions, respectively.

An artificial oxygen carrier is constructed by conjugating hemoglobin molecules to biodegradable micelles. Firstly a series of triblock copolymers (PEG-PMPC-PLA) in which the middle block contains pendant propargyl groups were synthesized and characterized. After the amphiphilic copolymer was self-assembled into core-shell micelles in aqueous solution, azidized hemoglobin molecules protected by carbon monoxide (CO) were conjugated to the micelles via click reaction between the propargyl and azido groups. The conjugation causes an increase of the micelle's mean diameter. Maximum conjugation ratio is 250 wt% in the hemoglobin-conjugated micelles (HCMs). Oxygen-binding ability of the HCMs was demonstrated by converting the CO-binding state of the HCMs into O-2-binding state.

An oxygen carrier was prepared by encapsulating carbonylated hemoglobin (CO-Hb) molecules into polypeptide vesicles made from poly(L-lysine)-block-poly(L-phenylalanine) (PLL-b-PPA) diblock copolymers in aqueous medium at pH 5.8. The encapsulation was confirmed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The morphology and size of the Vesicles were studied by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). They had a spherical shape with it mean diameter of about 4 to 5 mu m. The encapsulation efficiency of hemoglobin was 40 wt %, and the hemoglobin content in the vesicles was 32 wt %. The CO-Hb encapsulated in the PLL-b-PPA vesicles was more stable than free CO-Hb under ambient conditions, In the presence of a O-2 atmosphere, the CO-Hb in the vesicle could be converted into oxygen-binding hemoglobin (O-2-Hb) under irradiation of visible light for 2 h. Therefore, the CO-Hb/PLL-b-PPA vesicles are expected to be used its red blood cell substitutes.

CeF3, CeF3:Tb3+, and CeF3:Tb3+/LaF3 (core/shell) nanoparticles were prepared by the polyol method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), UV-vis absorption spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and lifetimes. The results of XRD indicate that the obtained CeF3, CeF3:Tb3+, and CeF3:Tb3+/LaF3 (core/shell) nanoparticles crystallized well at 200 degrees C in diethylene glycol (DEG) with a hexagonal structure. The TEM images illustrate that the CeF3 and CeF3:Tb3+ nanoparticles are spherical with a mean diameter of 7 nm. The growth of the LaF3 shell around the CeF3:Tb3+ core nanoparticles resulted in an increase of the average size (11 nm) of the nanopaticles as well as in a broadening of their size distribution. These nanocrystals can be well-dispersed in ethanol to form clear colloidal solutions. The colloidal solutions of CeF3 and CeF3:Tb3+ show the characteristic emission of Ce3+ 5d-4f (320 nm) and Tb3+ D-5(4)-F-7(J) (J = 6-3, with D-5(4)-F-7(5) green emission at 542 nm as the strongest one) transitions, respectively. The emission intensity and lifetime of the CeF3:Tb3+/LaF3 (core/shell) nanoparticles increased with respect to those of CeF3:Tb3+ core particles.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity of silver-gold bimetallic nanostructures (a mean diameter of similar to 100 nm) with hollow interiors was checked using p-aminothiophenol (p-ATP) as a probe molecule at both visible light (514.5 nm) and near-infrared (1064 nm) excitation. Evident Raman peaks of p-ATP were clearly observed, indicating the enhancement Raman scattering activity of the hollow nanostructure to p-ATP. The enhancement factors (EF) at the hollow nanostructures were obtained to be as large as (0.8 +/- 0.3)x10(6) and (2.7 +/- 0.5)x10(8) for 7a and 19b (b(2)) vibration mode, respectively, which was 30-40 times larger than that at silver nanoparticles with solid interiors at 514.5 nm excitation. EF values were also obtained at 1064 nm excitation for 7a and b(2)-type vibration mode, which were estimated to be as large as (1.0 +/- 0.3)x10(6) and (0.9 +/- 0.2)x10(7), respectively. The additional EF values by a factor of similar to 10 for b(2)-type band were assumed to be due to the chemical effect. Large electromagnetic EF values were presumed to derive from a strong localized plasmas electromagnetic field existed at the hollow nanostructures.

Nanopowders of amorphous silicon nitride were densified and sintered without additives under ultrahigh pressure (1.0-5.0 GPa) between room temperature and 1600 degrees C. The powders had a mean diameter of 18 nm and contained similar to 5.0 wt% oxygen that came from air-exposure oxidation, Sintering results at different temperatures were characterized in terms of sintering density, hardness, phase structure, and grain size. It was observed that the nanopowders can be pressed to a high density (87%) even at room temperature under the high pressure. Bulk Si3N4 amorphous and crystalline ceramics (relative density: 95-98%) were obtained at temperatures slightly below the onset of crystallization (1000-1100 degrees C and above 1420 degrees C, respectively. Rapid grain growth occurred during the crystallization leading to a grain size (>160 nm) almost 1 order of magnitude greater than the starting particulate diameters, With the rise of sintering temperature, a final density was reached between 1350 and 1420 degrees C, which seemed to be independent of the pressure applied (1.0-5.0 GPa), The densification temperature observed under the high pressure is lower by 580 degrees C than that by hot isostatic pressing sintering, suggesting a significantly enhanced low-temperature sintering of the nanopowders under a high external pressure.

Nonstiochiometric SnO2-x nanocrystalline material were successfully prepared through Sol-Gel process using anhydrous stannic chloride and iso-propyl alcohol. TEM observation shows that the mean diameter of the powder sintered at 700 degrees C for 2 hours is about 20 nm. By the investigation of XRD and ESR, we can conclude that the sample sintered at 300 degrees C for 2 hours was amorphous and it grew into nanocrystalline with the oxygen vacancies and defects when sintered at 700 degrees C for 2 hours. Using these conclusion, the ESR signals and the difference between the two SnO2-x samples are explained.

Transport phenomena in radial flow metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) reactor with three concentric vertical inlets are studied by two-dimensional numerical modeling. By varying the parameters such as gas pressure, flow rates combination of multi-inlets, geometric shapes and sizes of reactor and flow distributor, temperatures of susceptor and ceiling, and susceptor rotation, the corresponding velocity, temperature, and concentration fields inside the reactor are obtained; the onset and change of flow recirculation cells under influences of those parameters are determined. It is found that recirculation cells, originated from flow separation near the bend of reactor inlets, are affected mainly by the reactor height and shape, the operating pressure, the flow rates combination of multi-inlets, and the mean temperature between susceptor and ceiling. By increasing the flow rate of mid-inlet and the mean temperature, decreasing the pressure, maintaining the reactor height below certain criteria, and trimming the bends of reactor wall and flow distributor to streamlined shape, the recirculation cells can be minimized so that smooth and rectilinear flow prevails in the susceptor region, which corresponds to smooth and rectilinear isotherms and larger reactant concentration near the susceptor. For the optimized reactor shape, the reactor size can be enlarged to diameter D = 40 cm and height H = 2 cm without flow recirculation. The susceptor rotation over a few hundred rpm around the reactor central axis will induce the recirculation cell near the exit and deflect the streamlines near the susceptor, which is not the case for vertical reactors. Compared with other existing methods, the feature point-based image watermarking schemes can resist to global geometric attacks and local geometric attacks, especially cropping and random bending attacks (RBAs), by binding watermark synchronization with salient image characteristics. However, the watermark detection rate remains low in the current feature point-based watermarking schemes. The main reason is that both of feature point extraction and watermark embedding are more or less related to the pixel position, which is seriously distorted by the interpolation error and the shift problem during geometric attacks. In view of these facts, this paper proposes a geometrically robust image watermarking scheme based on local histogram. Our scheme mainly consists of three components: (1) feature points extraction and local circular regions (LCRs) construction are conducted by using Harris-Laplace detector; (2) a mechanism of grapy theoretical clustering-based feature selection is used to choose a set of non-overlapped LCRs, then geometrically invariant LCRs are completely formed through dominant orientation normalization; and (3) the histogram and mean statistically independent of the pixel position are calculated over the selected LCRs and utilized to embed watermarks. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can provide sufficient robustness against geometric attacks as well as common image processing operations. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Detailed investigations on the structural and mechanical properties of the forewing of the cicada were carried out. Measurement of the structures of the wings showed that the thickness of the membrane of each cell and the diameter of each vein were non-uniform in both the longitudinal and transverse directions, and their means were approximately 12.2 and 133.3 mum, respectively. However, the aspect ratios of the wings and the bodies were quite uniform and were approximately equal to 2.98 and 2.13, respectively. Based on the measured thickness, mass and area of the membranes of the cells, the mean density and the mean area density of the wing were approximately 2.3 g cm(-3) and 2.8 x 10(-3) g cm(-2), respectively. In addition, the diameters of the veins of the wings, including the diameters of the holes in the vein of the leading edge, were examined. The mechanical properties of the wing were investigated separately by nanoindentation and tensile testing. The results indicated that the mean Young's modulus, hardness and yield stress of the membranes of the wings were approximately 3.7 Gpa, 0.2 Gpa and 29 Mpa, respectively, and the mean Young's modulus and strength of the veins along the direction of the venation of wings were approximately 1.9 Gpa and 52 Mpa, respectively. Finally, the relevant results were briefly analyzed and discussed, providing a guideline to the biomimetic design of the aerofoil materials of micro air vehicles.

A narrow strip is used to control mean and fluctuating forces on a circular cylinder at Reynolds numbers from 2.0 x 10(4) to 1.0 x 10(5). The axes of the strip and cylinder are parallel. The control parameters are strip width ratio and strip position characterized by angle of attack and distance from the cylinder. Wind tunnel tests show that the vortex shedding from both sides of the cylinder can be suppressed, and mean drag and fluctuating lift on the cylinder can be reduced if the strip is installed in an effective zone downstream of the cylinder. A phenomenon of mono-side vortex shedding is found. The strip-induced local changes of velocity profiles in the near wake of the cylinder are measured, and the relation between base suction and peak value in the power spectrum of fluctuating lift is studied. The control mechanism is then discussed from different points of view.
