We report selective metallization on surfaces of insulators ( glass slides and lithium niobate crystal) based on femtosecond laser modification combined with electroless plating. The process is mainly composed of four steps: (1) formation of silver nitrate thin films on the surfaces of glass or crystal substrates; (2) generation of silver particles in the irradiated area by femtosecond laser direct writing; (3) removal of unirradiated silver nitrate films; and (4) selective electroless plating in the modified area. We discuss the mechanism of selective metallization on the insulators. Moreover, we investigate the electrical and adhesive properties of the copper microstructures patterned on the insulator surfaces, showing great potential of integrating electrical functions into lab-on-a-chip devices. The feasibility of using protein A to immobilize antibody on silicon surface for a biosensor with imaging ellipsometry was presented in this study. The amount of human IgG bound with anti-IgG immobilized by the protein A on silicon surface was much more than that bound with anti-IgG immobilized by physical adsorption. The result indicated that the protein A could be used to immobilize antibody molecules in a highly oriented manner and maintain antibody molecular functional configuration on the silicon surface. High reproducibility of the amount of antibody immobilization and homogenous antibody adsorption layer on surfaces could be obtained by this immobilization method. Imaging ellipsometry has been proven to be a fast and reliable detection method and sensitive enough to detect small changes in a molecular monolayer level. The combination of imaging ellipsometry and surface modification with protein A has the potential to be further developed into an efficient immunoassay protein chip.

A remarkably increased coagulation rate for 2-mu m PS spheres was previously reported for a perikinetic coagulation experiment performed under microgravity conditions (1998, R. Folkersma, A. J. G. van Diemen, and H. N. Stein, J. Colloid Interface Sci. 206, 482); from this experiment, it was assumed that the leading factor slowing the coagulation process under normal gravitation was free convection due to gravity (1998, R. Folkersma, and H. N. Stein, J. Colloid Interface Sci. 206, 494). To test the influence of free convection as a single-effect factor on the coagulation process, a ground-based experiment was constructed. The coagulation rate of 2-mu m PS spheres dispersed in water was determined by measuring the turbidity of the dispersion solution while convection-driven flows in the solution were checked with a visual magnification system. We found that it was possible to cease free convection-driven particle flows on the ground, as long as the experiments were carefully operated. The strength of convection was controlled by changing the temperature gradient applied to the sample cell. By monitoring both the coagulation rate and convection-driven flows simultaneously, our experiments showed that weak free convection (maximum speed <150 mu m/s) actually has negligible effects on the coagulation rate.

A global numerical model for shallow water flows on the cubed-sphere grid is proposed in this paper. The model is constructed by using the constrained interpolation profile/multi-moment finite volume method (CIP/MM FVM). Two kinds of moments, i.e. the point value (PV) and the volume-integrated average (VIA) are defined and independently updated in the present model by different numerical formulations. The Lax-Friedrichs upwind splitting is used to update the PV moment in terms of a derivative Riemann problem, and a finite volume formulation derived by integrating the governing equations over each mesh element is used to predict the VIA moment. The cubed-sphere grid is applied to get around the polar singularity and to obtain uniform grid spacing for a spherical geometry. Highly localized reconstruction in CIP/MM FVM is well suited for the cubed-sphere grid, especially in dealing with the discontinuity in the coordinates between different patches. The mass conservation is completely achieved over the whole globe. The numerical model has been verified by Williamson's standard test set for shallow water equation model on sphere. The results reveal that the present model is competitive to most existing ones. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs) have been fabricated by depositing 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5 monolayer (ML) InAs on surfaces of the undoped-n(+) (UN+) type GaAs structure. Room temperature contactless electroreflectance (CER) was employed to study the built-in electric field and the surface Fermi level pinning of these QD-covered UN+ GaAs samples. The CER results show that 1.6 ML InAs QDs on GaAs do not modify the Fermi level, whereas for samples with more than 1.6 ML InAs coverage, the surface Fermi level is moved to the valence band maximum of GaAs by about 70 meV (which is independent of the InAs deposition thickness) compared to bare GaAs. It is concluded that the modification of InAs coverage on the Fermi level on the GaAs surface is due to the QDs, rather than to the wetting layer. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

This paper reviews the recent progress made in the asymmetric synthesis on chiral catalysts in porous materials and discusses the effects of surface and pores on enantio-selectivity (confinement effect). This paper also summarizes various approaches of immobilization of the chiral catalysts onto surfaces and into pores of solid inorganic supports such as microporous and mesoporous materials. The most important reactions surveyed for the chiral synthesis in porous materials include epoxidation. hydrogenation, hydroformylation, Aldol and Diels-Alder reactions, etc. The confinement effect originated from the surfaces and the pores turns out to be a general phenomenon. which may make the enantioselectivity increase (positive effect) or decrease (negative effect). The confinement effect becomes more pronounced particularly when the bonding between the catalyst and the surface is more rigid and the pore size is tuned to a suitable range. It is proposed that the confinement in chiral synthesis is essentially a consequence of subtle change in transition states induced by weak-interaction in pores or on surfaces. It is also anticipated that the enantioselectivity could be improved by tuning the confinement effect based on the molecular designing of the pore/surface and the immobilized catalysts according to the requirements of chiral reactions.

Isolated transition metal ions/oxides in molecular sieves and on surfaces are a class of active sites for selective oxidation of hydrocarbons. Identifying the active sites and their coordination structure is vital to understanding their essential role played in catalysis and designing and synthesizing more active and selective catalysts. The isolated transition metal ions in the framework of molecular sieves (e.g., TS-1, Fe-ZSM-5, and V-MCM-41) or on the surface of oxides (e.g., MoO3/Al2O3 and TiO2/SiO2) were successfully identified by UV resonance Raman spectroscopy. The charge transfer transitions between the transition metal ions and the oxygen anions are excited by a UV laser and consequently the UV resonance Raman effect greatly enhances the Raman signals of the isolated transition metal ions. The local coordination of these ions in the rigid framework of molecular sieves or in the relatively flexible structure on the surface can also be differentiated by the shifts of the resonance Raman bands. The relative concentration of the isolated transition metal ion/oxides could be estimated by the intensity ratio of Raman bands. This study demonstrates that the UV resonance Raman spectroscopy is a general technique that can be widely applied to the in-situ characterization of catalyst synthesis and catalytic reactions. We analyzed the effects of both natural convection and forced flows on solid–liquid interface morphology during upward Bridgman solidification of metallic alloys. Experiments were carried out on Al–3.5wt% Ni alloy, for a cylindrical sample. The influence of natural convection induced by radial thermal gradient on solidified microstructure was first analyzed as a function of the pulling rate. Then, the influence of axial vibration on solidification microstructure was experimentally investigated by varying vibration parameters (frequency and amplitude). Experimental results demonstrated that vibrations could be used to either attenuate fluid flow in the melt and obtain a uniform dendritic pattern or to promote a fragmented dendritic microstructure. However, no marked effect was observed for cellular growth. This pointed out the critical role of the mushy zone in the interaction between fluid flow and solidification microstructure.

This short communication presents our recent studies to implement numerical simulations for multi-phase flows on top-ranked supercomputer systems with distributed memory architecture. The numerical model is designed so as to make full use of the capacity of the hardware. Satisfactory scalability in terms of both the parallel speed-up rate and the size of the problem has been obtained on two high rank systems with massively parallel processors, the Earth Simulator (Earth simulator research center, Yokohama Kanagawa, Japan) and the TSUBAME (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan) supercomputers.

The competitive adsorption of collagen and bovine serum albumin (BSA) on surfaces with varied wettability was investigated with imaging ellipsometry, and ellipsometry. Silane modified silicon surfaces were used as substrates. The results showed that surface wettability had an important effect on protein competitive adsorption. With the decrease of surface wettability, the adsorption of collagen from the mixture solution of collagen and BSA decreased, while the adsorption of BSA increased. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V.

A novel method for immobilization of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2) on electrode surfaces based on the vapor-surface sol-gel deposition strategy is first demonstrated in this paper. Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2 immobilized sol-gel (Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2/sol-gel) films were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and field-emitted scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). These results showed that Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2 was successfully incorporated into the silica sol-gel film. it was found that many irregular Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2/sol-gel clusters were formed on surfaces through one deposition and thick sol-gel films were observed after further deposition.

Ethylene-propylene copolymer (EP) was functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) by means of a radical-initiated melt grafting reaction. FTIR and ESCA were used to characterize the formation of EP-g-GMA copolymers. The content of GMA in EP-g-GMA was determined by using hydrochloric acid/xylene titration. Effects of concentrations of GMA and dicumyl peroxide on grafting rate were studied. It was found that contact angles of the water on surfaces of EP-g-GMA samples increased with increasing content of GMA in EP-g-GMA. The influence of the content of GMA on the crystallization structure of EP-g-GMA was investigated by DSC and WAXD. Compared with the plain EP, the crystallization temperature of propylene blocks of EP-g-GMA increased over 10 K, and the melting temperature and crystallinity decreased somewhat. Functionalization of EP led to the change of the crystal form of propylene blocks from the mixed form of alpha and beta into the alpha form. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The electrochemical behaviours of three kinds of soluble polyimides were investigated for the first time. It was observed that the cyclic voltammograms(CVS) of these polyimides in nonaqueous solutions are obviously different from that of the poly-imide films casted on surfaces of glass carbon electrode(GCEs) in aqueous solutions.
