Fluorophosphate glasses codoped with Tm3+ and Yb3+ were prepared and their thermal stability, phonon states, and upconversion properties were studied. It is found that the increment of phosphate content is good for the thermal stability but increases the phonon density of states. However, the phonon density of states of these fluorophosphate glasses is very low due to the low phosphate content in their composition. The upconversion luminescence spectra were measured under excitation of 970 nm laser diode, and the intense blue (476 nm) and near infrared (794 nm) emission were simultaneous obtained at room temperature. The sensitizing mechanisms of Yb3+ to Tm3+ for blue and red emission contain both sequential and cooperative sensitization. The near infrared emission is a two-photon upconversion process. These researches suggest that when the phosphate content in the composition is low enough, fluorophosphate glass can be suitable host material of Tm3+ codoped with Yb3+ for blue and near infrared upconversion luminescence. The magnetocapacitive response of a double-barrier structure (DBS), biased beyond resonances, has been employed to determine the density of states (DOS) of the two-dimensional electron gas residing in the accumulation layer on the incident side of the DBS. An adequate procedure is developed to compare the model calculation of the magnetocapacitance with the experimental C vs B curves measured at different temperatures and biases. The results show that the fitting is not only self-consistent but also remarkably good even in well-defined quantum Hall regimes. As a result, information about the DOS in strong magnetic fields could reliably be extracted.

The density of states (DOS) above Fermi level of hydrogenated microcrystalline silicon (mu c-Si H) films is correlated to the material microstructure. We use Raman scattering and infrared absorption spectra to characterize the structure of the films made with different hydrogen dilution ratios. The DOS of the films is examined by modulated photocurrent measurement. The results have been accounted for in the framework of a three-phase model comprised of amorphous and crystalline components, with the grain boundary as the third phase. We observed that the DOS increases monotonically as the grain boundary volume fractions f(gb) is increased, which indicates a positive correlation between the DOS and the grain boundary volume fraction.

The electronic structure of a bounded intrinsic stacking fault in silicon is calculated. The method used is an LCAO-scheme (Linear Combinations of Atomic Orbitals) taking ten atomic orbitals of s-, p-, and d-type into account. The levels in the band gap are extracted using Lanczos' algorithm and a continued fraction representation of the local density of states. We find occupied states located up to 0.3 eV above the valence band maximum (E(v)). This significantly differs from the result obtained for the ideal infinite fault for which the interface state is located at E(v)+ 0.1 eV.

An LCAO scheme (linear combination of atomic orbitals) taking into account ten atomic orbitals (s-, p-, and d-type) is used to calculate the electronic structure of a vacancy present in the core of the reconstructed 90 degrees partial dislocation in silicon. The levels in the band gap are extracted using Lanczos' algorithm and a continued fraction representation of the local density of states. The three-fold degenerate stale of the ideal vacancy is split into three levels with energies 0.26, 1.1, and 1.9 eV measured from the valence band edge.

The evolution of dispersed short-fatigue-cracks is analysed based on the equilibrium of crack-number-density (CND). By separating the mean value and the stochastic fluctuation of local CND, the equilibrium equation of overall CND is derived. Comparing with the mean-field equilibrium equation, the equilibrium equation of overall CND has different forms in the expression of crack-nucleation-rate or crack-growth-rate. The simulation results are compared with experimental measurements showing the stochastic analyses provide consistent tendency with experiments. The discrepancy in simulation results between overall CND and mean-field CND is discussed.

LiFePO4 attracts a lot of attention as cathode materials for the next generation of lithium ion batteries. However, LiFePO4 has a poor rate capability attributed to low electronic conductivity and low density. There is seldom data reported on lithium ion batteries with LiFePO4 as cathode and graphite as anode. According to our experimental results, the capacity fading on cycling is surprisingly negligible at 1664 cycles for the cell type 042040. It delivers a capacity of 1170 mAh for 18650 cell type at 4.5C discharge rate. It is confirmed that lithium ion batteries with LiFePO4 as cathode are suitable for electric vehicle application. We study phonon properties of one-dimensional nanocrystalline solids that are associated with a model nanostructured sequence. A real-space renormalization-group approach, connected with a series of renormalization-group transformations, is developed to calculate numerically the local phonon Green's function at an arbitrary site, and then the phonon density of states of these kinds of nanocrystalline chains. Some interesting phonon properties of nanocrystalline chains are obtained that are in qualitative agreement with the experimental results for the optical-absorption spectra of nanostructured solids.

To search for a high sensitivity sensor for formaldehyde (H2CO), We investigated the adsorption of H2CO on the intrinsic and Al-doped graphene sheets using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Compared with the intrinsic graphene, the Al-doped graphene system has high binding energy value and short connecting distance, which are caused by the chemisorption of H2CO molecule. Furthermore, the density of states (DOS) results show that orbital hybridization could be seen between H2CO and Al-doped graphene sheet, while there is no evidence for hybridization between the H2CO molecule and the intrinsic graphene sheet. Therefore, Al-doped graphene is expected to be a novel chemical sensor for H2CO gas. We hope our calculations are useful for the application of graphene in chemical sensor.

Yb3+Er3+-codoped chloride-modified germanate-bismuth-lead glasses have been synthesized by the conventional melting and quenching method. Structural and thermal stability properties have been obtained on the basis of the Raman spectra and differential thermal analysis, which indicate that the PbCl2 addition has an important influence on the phonon density of states, maximum phonon energy, and thermal stability of host glasses. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters and quantum efficiencies were calculated on the basis of the Judd-Ofelt theory and lifetime measurements. For the 1.53 mu m emission band, the full widths at the half-maximum increase and peak wavelengths are blueshifted with increasing PbCl2 content. Moreover, the effect of the PbCl2 addition on the phonon density of states, OH- content, and upconversion luminescence has been discussed and evaluated. Our results reveal that, with increasing PbCl2 content, the decrease of phonon density and OH- content contributes more to the enhanced upconversion emissions than that of maximum phonon energy. A new formulation derived from thermal characters of inclusions and host films for estimating laser induced damage threshold has been deduced. This formulation is applicable for dielectric films when they are irradiated by laser beam with pulse width longer than tens picoseconds. This formulation can interpret the relationship between pulse-width and damage threshold energy density of laser pulse obtained experimentally. Using this formulation, we can analyze which kind of inclusion is the most harmful inclusion. Combining it with fractal distribution of inclusions, we have obtained an equation which describes relationship between number density of inclusions and damage probability. Using this equation, according to damage probability and corresponding laser energy density, we can evaluate the number density and distribution in size dimension of the most harmful inclusions. The electronic structure and mechanical properties Of UC2 and U2C3 have been systematically investigated using first-principles calculations by the projector-augmented-wave (PAW) method. Furthermore, in order to describe precisely the strong on-site Coulomb repulsion among the localized U 5f electrons, we adopt the generalized gradient approximation +U formalisms for the exchange-correlation term. We show that our calculated structural parameters and electronic properties for UC2 and U2C3 are in good agreement with the experimental data by choosing an appropriate Hubbard U = 3 eV. As for the chemical bonding nature, the contour plot of charge density and total density of states suggest that UC2 and U2C3 are metallic mainly contributed by the 5f electrons, mixed with significant covalent component resulted from the strong C-C bonds. The present results also illustrate that the metal-carbon (U-C) bonding and the carbon-carbon covalent bonding in U2C3 are somewhat weaker than those in UC2, leading to the weaker thermodynamic stability at high temperature as observed by experiments.

First-principles calculations; ZnO nanofilms; Electronic properties; Quantum effects; NANOBELTS; NANORINGS; WURTZITE; ENERGY Abstract: Using first-principles density-functional calculations, we have studied the structural and electronic properties Of Ultrathin ZnO {0001} nanofilms. The structural parameters, the charge densities, band structures and density of states have been investigated. The results show that there are remarkable charge transfers from Zn to O atoms in the ZOO nanofilms. All the ZOO nanofilms exhibit direct wide band gaps compared with bulk counterpart, and the gap decreases with increased thickness of the nanofilms. The decreased band gap is associated with the weaker ionic bonding within layers and the less localization of electrons in thicker films. A staircase-like density of states occurs at the bottom of conduction band, indicating the two-dimensional quantum effects in ZnO nanofilms.

The crystal structure, mechanical properties and electronic structure of ground state BeH2 are calculated employing the first-principles methods based on the density functional theory. Our calculated structural parameters at equilibrium volume are well consistent with experimental results. Elastic constants, which well obey the mechanical stability criteria, are firstly theoretically acquired. The bulk modulus B, Shear modulus G, Young's modulus E, and Poisson's ratio upsilon are deduced from the elastic constants. The bonding nature in BeH2 is fully interpreted by combining characteristics in band structure, density of states, and charge distribution. The ionicity in the Be-H bond is mainly featured by charge transfer from Be 2s to H 1s atomic orbitals while its covalency is dominated by the hybridization of H 1s and Be 2p states. The Bader analysis of BeH2 and MgH2 are performed to describe the ionic/covalent character quantitatively and we find that about 1.61 (1.6) electrons transfer from each Be (Mg) atom to H atoms.

We perform first-principles calculations of electronic structure and optical properties for UO2 and PuO2 based on the density functional theory using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) + U scheme. The main features in orbital-resolved partial density of states for occupied f and p orbitals, unoccupied d orbitals, and related gaps are well reproduced compared to experimental observations. Based on the satisfactory ground-state electronic structure calculations, the dynamical dielectric function and related optical spectra, i.e., the reflectivity, adsorption coefficient, energy-loss, and refractive index spectrum, are obtained. These results are consistent with the available experiments.
