From a random insertion mutant library of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, a mutant defective in photoautotrophic growth was obtained. The interrupted gene was identified to be slr2094 (rbpl), which encodes the fructose-1,6-biphosphatase (FBPase)/sedoheptulose-1,7-biphosphatase (SBPase) bifunctional enzyme (F-I). Two other independently constructed slr2094 mutants showed an identical phenotype. The FBPase activity was found to be virtually lacking in an slr2094 mutant, which was sensitive to light under mixotrophic growth conditions. These results indicate that slr2094 is the only active FBPase-encoding gene in this cyanobacterium. Inactivation of photosystem II by interrupting psbB in slr2094 mutant alleviated the sensitiveness to light. This report provides the direct genetic evidence for the essential role of F-I in the photosynthesis of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. A bifunctional reagent of 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate (TEPI) was initially adopted as a spacer reagent to prepare the bonded types of chiral stationary phases (CSPs) with cellulose derivatives. The silica-based CSPs were chemically prepared with non-regioselective and regioselective approaches and their chiral resolving capabilities were evaluated in terms of HPLC resolution of test enantiomers. It was observed that the chiral recognition capabilities of the non-regioselectively prepared CSPs were influenced by the amount of TEPI used. And also, the regioselectively prepared CSP generally showed a slightly higher resolution power than the non-regioselectively prepared CSP, while the non-regioselective procedures were highly advantageous to rapid preparation. In addition, chiral recognition of the prepared CSPs was affected by the properties of the used silica matrices. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

It was found that silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles modified onto glassy carbon (GC) electrode exhibited a dramatic promotion on the direct electron transfer of Cytochrome c (Cyt c). The corresponding mechanism was discussed based on the electrochemical characteristics and a spatial geometrical model of the bifunctional structure. The model could offer insight to the study of biosensors and bioreactors without chemical mediator and serve as a basis for their fabrication. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two new silica-based organic-inorganic hybrid materials (B104SGs and O104SGs) doped with a binary mixture of imidazolium and phosphonium ionic liquids have been synthesized and used as sorbents in batch system for rare earths (RE) separation. Imidazolium ionic liquids 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (C(4)mim(+)PF(6)(-)) or 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (C(8)mim(+)PF(6)(-)) acted as porogens to prepare porous materials and additives to stabilize extractant within silica gel.

This paper reports the syntheses, crystal structures, and luminescent and magnetic properties of four tetranuclear Tb-III (1 and 3) and Dy-III (2 and 4) complexes supported by p-phenylthiacalix[4]arene (H(4)PTC4A) and p-tert-butylthiacalix-[4]arene (H(4)TC4A). All four frameworks can be formulated as [Ln(4)(III)(PTC4A/TC4A)(2)(mu(4)-OH)Cl-3(CH3OH)(2)(H2O)(3)], and some methanol and water solvent molecules are occupied in the interstices. The compounds are featured with a sandwichlike unit constructed by two tail-to-tail calixarene molecules and a planar tetragonal (mu(4)-OH)Ln(4) cluster. The photoluminescent analyses suggest that there is an efficient ligand-to-Ln(III) energy transfer for compounds 1-3 and H(4)PTC4A is a more efficient "antenna" than H(4)TC4A.

The controlled synthesis of bifunctional Au@Pt hybrid nanorods has been realized through a simple wet chemical approach. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis-near infrared spectroscopy (UV-vis-NIR) were employed to characterize the obtained hybrid nanorods. TEM results indicate that the thickness of Pt nanoislands on the surfaces of gold nanorods can be easily tunable via controlling the molar ratio of An nanorods to the H2PtCl6. These Au@Pt hybrid nanorods have dual functions, which can be used not only for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), but also to exhibit good catalytic activity for 02 reduction. It is expected that these hybrid nanorods can be used as new functional building blocks to assemble novel three-dimensional (31)) complex multicomponent nanostructures, which are believed to be useful for electrochemical nanodevices.

Bifunctional nanoarchitecture has been developed by combining the magnetic iron oxide and the luminescent Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) encapsulated in silica. First, the iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized and coated with silica, which was used to isolate the magnetic nanoparticles from the outer-shell encapsulated Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) to prevent luminescence quenching. Then onto this core an outer shell of silica containing encapsulated Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) was grown through the Stober method. Highly luminescent Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) serves as a luminescent marker, while magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles allow external manipulation by a magnetic field. Since Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) is a typical electrochemiluminescence (ECL) reagent and it could still maintain such property when encapsulated in the bifunctional nanoparticle, we explored the feasibility of applying the as-prepared nanostructure to fabricating an ECL sensor; such method is simple and effective. We applied the prepared ECL sensor not only to the typical Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) co-reactant tripropylamine (TPA), but also to the practically important polyamines. Consequently, the ECL sensor shows a wide linear range, high sensitivity, and good stability.

Anew class of bifunctional architecture combining the useful functions of superparamagnetism and terbium complex luminescence into one material has been prepared via two main steps by a modified Stober method and the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique. The obtained bifunctional nanocomposites exhibit superparamagnetic behavior, high fluorescence intensity, and color purity. The architecture has been characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry.
