Based on the Coulomb friction model, the frictional motion model of workpiece relating to the polishing pad was presented in annular polishing. By the dynamic analysis software, the model was simulated and analysed. The conclusions from the results were that the workpiece did not rotate steadily. When the angular velocity of ring and the direction were the same as that of the polishing pad, the angular velocity of workpiece hoicked at the beginning and at the later stage were the same as that of the polishing pad before contacting with the ring. The angular velocity of workpiece vibrated at the moment of contacting with the ring. After that the angular velocity of workpiece increased gradually and fluctuated at a given value, while the angular velocity of ring decreased gradually and also fluctuated at a given value. Since the contact between the workpiece and the ring was linear, their linear velocities and directions should be the same. But the angular velocity of workpiece was larger than that of the polishing pad on the condition that the radius of the workpiece was less than that of the ring. This did not agree with the pure translation principle and the workpiece surface could not be flat, either. Consequently, it needed to be controlled with the angular velocity of ring and the radii of the ring and the workpiece, besides friction to make the angular velocity of workpiece equal to that of the polishing pad for obtaining fine surface flatness of the workpiece. In the present paper, a theoretical model is studied on the flow in the liquid annular film, which is ejected from a vessel with relatively higher temperature and painted on the moving solid fiber. A temperature gradient, driving a thermocapillary flow, is formed on the free surface because of the heat transfer from the liquid with relatively higher temperature to the environmental gas with relatively lower temperature. The thermocapillary flow may change the radii profile of the liquid film. This process analyzed is based on the approximations of lubrication theory and perturbation theory, and the equation of the liquid layer radii and the process of thermal hydrodynamics in the liquid layer are solved for a temperature distribution on the solid fiber.

A new model is developed for predicting the transition from the slug to annular flow of adiabatic two-phase gas/liquid flow in microgravity (mu g) environment. This model is based on the analyses of the effects of the surface tension and the gas inertia in a sense of more physical approach. The drift-flux model is applied to determine the gas void fraction near the transition region. The new model is compared with previous models and experimental data, and the results show the improvement in explanation of the experimental results.

The axisymmetric problem of an elastic fiber perfectly bonded to a nonhomogeneous elastic matrix which contains an annular crack going through the interface into the fiber under axially symmetric shear stress is considered. The nature of the stress singularity is studied. It is shown that at the irregular point on the interface, whether the shear modulus is continuous or discontinuous the stresses are bounded. The problem is formulated in terms of a singular integral equation and can be solved by a regular method. The stress intensity factors and crack surface displacement are given.

In 1980 the Beijing Observatory had successively observed sevesal rare completely closed ring prominences whose ring plane was approximately parallel to the solar surface with a characteristic life about 1—2 days. In this paper we discuss the static equilibrium of this kind of horizontal ring plasma under the simultaneous actions of magnetic force, gravity and pressure gradients. Assuming ring plasma with axisymmetry and rectangular plasma cross-section and adopting closed magnetic field boundary condition from the basic equations we obtain the exact zero order general solutions for magnetic field (force-free field) and density (pressure). We further obtain an eigen-solution for the zero order magnetic field and density as well as the first order magnetic field, thus giving a kind of the possible distribution of magnetic field and density for the horizontal closed ring prominence. The closed magnetic structure of ring prominence as presented in this paper, has no link with the force lines of the outside corona magnetic field. This is helpful to explain the great temperature difference between prominenee and corona.

Combining differential confocal microscopy and an annular pupil filter, we obtained the normalized axial intensity distribution curve of an optical system. We used the sharp slopes of the axial response curve of the optical system to measure the surface profile of a reflection grating. Experimental results prove that this method can extend the axial dynamic range and improve the transverse resolution of three-dimensional profilometry by sacrificing axial resolution. We demonstrate an ultrafast transient, ring-shaped population grating induced by an ultrashort hollow Gaussian laser bullet by solving the three-dimensional full-wave Maxwell-Bloch equations. Through adjusting the beam waist and the area of the pulse, we can control the number of lines and the period of the grating. Based on this coherent control scheme, a door to produce gratings with complex transverse structure is opened.

A planar lightwave circuit (PLC) add-drop filter is proposed and analyzed, which consists of a symmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) combined with double microring resonators. A critical coupling condition is derived for a better box-like drop spectrum. Comparisons of its characteristics with other schemes, such as a MZI with a single ring resonator, arepresented, and some of the issues about device design and fabrication are also discussed.

This paper investigates the influences of phase shift on superresolution performances of annular filters. Firstly, it investigates the influence of phase shift on axial superresolution. It proves theoretically that axial superresolution can not be obtained by two-zone phase filter with phase shift pi, and it gets the phase shift with which axial superresolution can be brought by two-zone phase filter. Secondly, it studies the influence of phase shift on transverse superresolution. It finds that the three-zone phase filter with arbitrary phase shift has an almost equal optimal transverse gain to that of commonly used three-zone phase filter, but can produce a much higher axial superresolution gain. Thirdly, it investigates the influence of phase shift on three-dimensional superresolution. Three-dimensional superresolution capability and design margin of three-zone complex filter with arbitrary phase shift are obtained, which presents the theoretical basis for three-dimensional superresolution design. Finally, it investigates the influence of phase shift on focal shift. To obtain desired focal shifts, it designs a series of three-zone phase filters with different phase shifts. A spatial light modulator (SLM) is used to implement the designed filters. By regulating the voltage imposed on the SLM, an accurate focal shift control is obtained.

A novel second-order polarization-independent filter made of a single ring resonator and a Sagnac interferometer (SRRSI) is proposed, and its filtering characteristics are investigated. By using birefringence in waveguide, a single ring resonator can be used to synthesize a filter with second-order response. Analytical formulas are derived for characteristics of the SRRSI varied with waveguide parameters.. such as the coupling coefficient; and the critical condition of a second-order Butterworth filter is given. The influence of loss in the ring resonator is also analyzed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We design three-zone annular filters to be applied to optical storage system. The designed filters extend the depth of focus and realize transverse superresolution simultaneously, which will improve the performance of optical storage system greatly. And we propose two feasible schemes to improve imaging resolution of three-dimensional imaging system. One scheme depends on a complex filter formed by cascading of a three-zone phase filter and a three-zone amplitude filter. The complex filter converge the optimized transverse superresolution and the optimized axial superresolution of two different filters onto a single filter. It can improve the three-dimensional imaging performances greatly. Another scheme depends on a single three-zone complex filter. We propose a three-zone complex filter with phase shift 0.8 pi, which presents bigger design margin, better imaging quality and stronger three-dimensional superresolution capability. In order to realize super-resolution in the 4Pi-confocal systems, the annular binary pure phase filter is designed with the vector diffraction theory. The relations between the super-resolved parameters, such as S, G(T), G(A), and the radial position theta(i) of each zone, are obtained. For simple illumination of the design procedure, three-zone binary pure phase filters are studied, and several numerical simulation results show that in the 4Pi-confocal system with the properly designed binary pure phase filter the super-resolution can be realized with low sidelobes.

A planar waveguide ring resonator was fabricated by organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel materials; its sensitivity to ethanol vapor was experimentally investigated. It was found that dips in the transmission spectrum of the device shifted to longer wavelengths with increasing the ethanol concentration, and its sensitivity showed a linear relation with the ethanol concentration, showing a coefficient of 1.13 pm/ppm. In addition, the transmission loss of the ring resonator decreased with increasing the ethanol concentration. The measured characteristics suggest that the device may be considered as one of the candidates of alcohol vapor sensors. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Accurate, analytical series expressions for the far-field diffraction of it Gaussian beam normally incident on a circular and central obscured aperture are derived with the help of the integration of parts method. With this expression, the far-field intensity distribution pattern can be obtained and the divergence angle is deduced too. Using the first five items of the series, the accuracy can satisfy most laser application fields. Compared with the conventional numerical integral method, the series representation is very convenient for understanding the physical meanings. (C) 2007 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.
