A parametric set of velocity distributions has been investigated using a flat plate experiment. Three different diffusion factors and peak velocity locations were tested. These were designed to mimic the suction surfaces of Low Pressure (LP) turbine blades. Unsteady wakes, inherent in real turbomachinery flows, were generated using a moving bar mechanism. A turbulence grid generated a freestream turbulence level that is believed to be typical of LP turbines. Measurements were taken across a Reynolds number range of 50,000-220,000 at three reduced frequencies (0.314, 0.628, 0.942). Boundary layer traverses were performed at the nominal trailing edge using a Laser Doppler Anemometry system and hot-films were used to examine the boundary layer behaviour along the surface. For every velocity distribution tested, the boundary layer separated in the diffusing flow downstream of the peak velocity. The loss production is dominated by the mixing in the reattachment process, mixing in the turbulent boundary layer downstream of reattachment and the effects of the unsteady interaction between the wakes and the boundary layer. A sensitive balance governs the optimal location of peak velocity on the surface. Moving the velocity peak forwards on the blade was found to be increasingly beneficial when bubblegenerated losses are high, i.e. at low Reynolds number, at low reduced frequency and at high levels of diffusion. Hydrodynamic properties of the surface vortex have been investigated. Based on the Navier-Stokes equations, three sets of the new formulations for the tangential velocity distributions are derived, and verified against the experimental measurements in the literature. It is shown that one modification greatly improves the agreement with the experimental data. Physical model experiments were carried out to study the intake vortex related to the Xiluodu hydropower project. The velocity fields were measured using the Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) technique. The proposed equation for tangential velocity distribution is applied to the Xiluodu project with the solid boundary being considered by the method of images. Good agreement has been observed between the formula prediction and the experimental observation. © 2010 Publishing House for Journal of Hydrodynamics.

The hydrodynamic properties of free surface vortices at hydraulic intakes were investigated. Based on the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations and empirical assumptions, two sets of formulations for the velocity distributions and the free surface profiles are proposed and validated against measurements available in the literature. Compared with previous formulae, the modifications based on Mih's formula are found to greatly improve the agreement with the experimental data. Physical model tests were also conducted to study the intake vortex of the Xiluodu hydroelectric project in China. The proposed velocity distribution formula was applied to the solid boundary as considered by the method of images. A good agreement was again observed between the prediction and the measurements. © 2011 International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research.

Bacteria of the species Salmonella enterica cause a range of life-threatening diseases in humans and animals worldwide. The within-host quantitative, spatial, and temporal dynamics of S. enterica interactions are key to understanding how immunity acts on these infections and how bacteria evade immune surveillance. In this study, we test hypotheses generated from mathematical models of in vivo dynamics of Salmonella infections with experimental observation of bacteria at the single-cell level in infected mouse organs to improve our understanding of the dynamic interactions between host and bacterial mechanisms that determine net growth rates of S. enterica within the host. We show that both bacterial and host factors determine the numerical distributions of bacteria within host cells and thus the level of dispersiveness of the infection.

Surface coatings and treatments have been used to reduce material loss of components in bubbling fluidized bed combustors (FBCs). The performance of protective coatings in FBC boilers and laboratory simulations is reviewed. Important coating properties to minimize wastage appear to be high hardness, low oxidation rate, low porosity, high adhesion and sufficient thickness to maintain protection for a long period. Economic considerations and criteria for choosing a suitable coating or treatment are discussed for the different types of bubbling FBC. © 1995.

Theoretical predictions of the diameters of continuous ink-jets downstream of long nozzles are generalized to include the important cases of ink-jet fluids and shorter nozzles where the velocity profile at the nozzle exit is undeveloped (non-parabolic). Comparisons of the new predictions with experiments and simulations are made for fairly long nozzles with tapered profiles and short nozzles with conical profiles; experimental and simulated profiles are also compared downstream of the nozzle exit for both industrial and large scale ink-jet print heads. Precise measurements of the un-modulated jet diameters downstream of the nozzle exit can set really useful limits to the possible shapes of the flow profile right at the nozzle exit, and in particular allow some assessment of the axial velocity gradients and fluid shear rates at the nozzle exit where direct speed measurement is usually impractical. Simulations allow further study of the relaxation of the velocity profile downstream of the nozzle exit, and are reported for both un-modulated and modulated CIJ jetting. Implications of this work include speeding up CIJ simulations, absolute calibration of the applied CIJ system modulation, and the likely magnitude of dynamic surface tension effects on observed CIJ satellite speeds.
