In the domain of energy storage, electrochemical capacitors have numerous applications ranging from hybrid vehicles to consumer electronics, with very high power density at the cost of relatively low energy storage. Here, we report an approach that uses vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays as electrodes in electrochemical capacitors. Different electrolytes were used and multiple parameters of carbon nanotube array were compared: carbon nanotube arrays were shown to be two to three times better than graphite in term of specific capacitance, while the surface functionalization was demonstrated to be a critical factor in both aqueous and nonaqueous solutions to increase the specific capacitance. We found that a maximum energy density of 21 Wh/kg at a power density of 1.1 kW/kg for a hydrophilic electrode, could be easily achieved by using tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate in propylene carbonate. These are encouraging results in the path of energy-storage devices with both high energy density and power density, using only carbon-based materials for the electrodes with a very long lifetime, of tens of thousands of cycles. © 2011 IEEE.

Tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) thin films are a promising material for use as biocompatible interfaces in applications such as in-vivo biosensors. However, the functionalization of ta-C film surface, which is a pre-requisite for biosensors, remains a big challenge due to its chemical inertness. We have investigated the bio-functionalization of ta-C films fabricated under specific physical conditions through the covalent attachment of functional biomolecular probes of peptide nucleic acid (PNA) to ta-C films, and the effect of fabrication conditions on the bio-functionalization. The study showed that the functional bimolecular probes such as protected long-chain ω-unsaturated amine (TFAAD) can be covalently attached to the ta-C surface through a well-defined structure. With the given fabrication process, electrochemical methods can be applied to the detection of biomolecular interaction, which establishes the basis for the development of stable, label-free biosensors. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Cell-material interactions are crucial for cell adhesion and proliferation on biomaterial surfaces. Immobilization of biomolecules leads to the formation of biomimetic substrates, improving cell response. We introduced RGD (Arg-Gly-Asp) sequences on poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) film surfaces using thiol chemistry to enhance Schwann cell (SC) response. XPS elemental analysis indicated an estimate of 2-3% peptide functionalization on the PCL surface, comparable with carbodiimide chemistry. Contact angle was not remarkably reduced; hence, cell response was only affected by chemical cues on the film surface. Adhesion and proliferation of Schwann cells were enhanced after PCL modification. Particularly, RGD immobilization increased cell attachment up to 40% after 6 h of culture. It was demonstrated that SC morphology changed from round to very elongated shape when surface modification was carried out, with an increase in the length of cellular processes up to 50% after 5 days of culture. Finally RGD immobilization triggered the formation of focal adhesion related to higher cell spreading. In summary, this study provides a method for immobilization of biomolecules on PCL films to be used in peripheral nerve repair, as demonstrated by the enhanced response of Schwann cells.
